It's highly disappointing to see a movie use a concept as awesome as cosmic horror as little more than a facilitator for gore porn.

Awful movie—skip unless under the influence, with friends and planning to be under the influence, enthusiastic about gore porn, or diehard aficionado for anything pertaining to cosmic horror.

I wish I could say I'm surprised to learn you have no idea what the definition of shilling is. You could've at least picked up on that before adding it to your cute little meme dictionary along with "cuck" and "kill yourself" (we're 2/3 on the Autism Bingo board so far).

>>81524466
>go ahead and explain how it's not cosmic horror "at all"

Alright so. I guess I'll have to spoil it to do so.

Cosmic horror is a genre of 'weird fiction' primarily focusing on a strictly materialist worldview with a protagonist(s) whose beliefs about the world, universe, nature, etc. are blown open by the implication and overt reference to a wider universe in which their beliefs are either wrong or the tip of the iceberg because of something they personally experience and come out of shaken and ridden with the true knowledge, or don't survive. Cosmic horror expounds on themes of the unknown, the vastness of the universe, the limitation of human knowledge and ability, existential dread and the incompatibility of the wider universe to narrow human experience.

Not a fucking shred of that appears in The Void. This movie is painted with very broad strokes. My first problem is the lack of a protagonist who embodies the human experience. We get a gruff cop type guy who quite coldly deals with the problems he encounters. His ex-wife nurse, the intern girl, the state trooper, all of these characters don't actually partake in any cosmic revelation of their place in the universe and the fragility of their world. They see some (stiff as all fuck practical effect) monsters, the main villain espouses a single cryptic throw-away line about catching the moth that is the human soul (another point against the movie is the implied supernaturalism there) and we see a CGI realm with a big black pyramid the main couple are just dandy in before holding hands and there's absolutely no central theme or message in the movie about human experience. This is a monster movie, no more, no less, with nary a hint of a whiff of any kind of deeper theme to it at all made by people who don't know what they're talking about.
>>
>>81524925
>confirmed for being retarded

>>

cosmic horror is a genre where horror could not exist without something from the cosmos.

it is cosmic horror, and you're clueless in the entire realm of art, horror, and literature if you think otherwise.

it's not a problem; just change your mind. say it with me: the void is cosmic horror. reverse your position. it's therapeutic.
>>
>>81525793
Yeah, guess what, I have too, you're not special and you're not that only fan and not the only person who cares, although I might be if you want to let this shallow movie pass as actual cosmic horror. Did you let the lol tentacles meme get you? Because it seems like you did, as that's all Lovecraftian horror is these days. If you gave a shit you'd try to look past the Cthulhu fhtagn memes shat out by Arkham House.
>>
>>81525866

>shallow

muh depth - mere virtue signalling for someone who see's 'being deep' as something that 'one should be', basically, memed at an early age.

you aren't even dealing with the important point, that the movie depicts the events of someone breaching the wall between life and death with the blessing of the Other gods, causing spontaneous manifestations of a wholly alien motivation within living flesh that can not die; your obsession with tentacles clearly caused you to overlook the more important and subtle elements, such as the means by which living tissue burst forth into eldritch motion, driven by an abominable animus.

cosmic.

horror.

fundamentally based on the discomfort we experience realizing that the precarious state of affairs that we're remotely capable of existing in, is a wholly arbitrary state of affairs achieved by chance, a pond in which titanic beings move slowly, over eons, right by us, who's merest glance - whose single thought or breath - spawns horrors such as occurred in that hospital. the essence of 'fear of god'. fear of terrible things older than god.

i don't think you even saw the movie or have read lovecraft or much of anything else. you sure don't act like it. there was no need to drag cthulu into all this.
>>
Just watched it last night, I think it was interesting at the beginning but then I felt like I was watching Resident Evil or some shit, especially near the middle/end when they just started shooting everything. There was too much action and thriller stuff, I would have appreciated a slower buildup and more mystery. Instead, like 15 minutes in it just randomly inserts this big monster into the story and that sets the pace for the rest of the movie

i got to school early and put an open staple into every single keyhole on all three floors of the school, and when all the teachers got there and started unlocking their doors, the staple bent into the pins of the lock, meaning the door was permanently locked. so they had to send everyone home that day, and the doors had to be taken off the hinges and the knobs replaced, which i payed for over a year working at subway, where i met my best friend.

totse made me do it.

Just be fucking appreciative that the movie exists and hope that it leads to more proper cosmic horror movies get made. Hopefully it's successful and people start feeling inspired.
>>
>>81526048
Your post is a fucking mess of cherrypicking.

>muh depth

No, anon, that's not what shallow means, it means it has no artistic merit, it has no underlying theme. For it to be cosmic horror, it has to, via characters, explore the themes I've already outlined. It doesn't do these.

>tentacles

If you knew modern Lovecraftian media, you'd know what I was talking about. Please consider OPs fucking image - human fingers turning into tentacles. Consider the other two posters for this movie, both triangles with tentacles emerging. Tentacles are, due to decades of abuse and misinformation, shorthand for Lovecraft. It's gotten to the point that there are people who associate tentacles in horror media as being Lovecraftian. It's a symptom of the bastardization of Lovecraft in pop culture. The Void happily carries it on.

The important point of the fucking movie is that it's a story that's been done to death by much better directors and writers. Your big super scary academic words you googled literally just mean 'mad doctor, through supernaturalism (which you conveniently overlook) brought back the dead wrong'. Did you know this is in part the basis of two Lovecraft stories which explore ideas such as: anticipating the concept of adrenaline before it was discovered, materialist chemical consciousness, the inherent evil in old things, the sins of the father and the loss of humanity through forbidden knowledge. Those are Herbert West - Reanimator and The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, stories with infinitely more stylistic flair and inspiration than whatever The Void was trying to be.

>a wholly arbitrary state of affairs achieved by chance, a pond in which titanic beings move slowly, over eons, right by us, who's merest glance - whose single thought or breath - spawns horrors such as occurred in that hospital.

This was not explored, spoken of or in any way referenced in the movie save for a single empty throwaway line from the mad doctor. Did YOU even watch it?

I enjoyed this one, the effects were practical and well done. Acting was sub par consistently, why was that Asian lady horribly reading lines the entire time? >James Benning took the founding of the New York Times in 1851 as a departure point for his latest film, Deseret. In the best Benning tradition, Deseret unfolds magnificent landscapes captured with a stationary camera during a dozen-odd trips throughout the calendar year - deserts, plains of snow, lonely trails, trees in bloom, cemeteries, ruins, unfriendly rocks, empty settlers' houses, roads that seem to be leading nowhere, a few isolated human figures. Deseret's starkly composed images suggest a space haunted by the official history written back East in the Times. Benning collected 93 stories about Utah, boiled them down to a few lines and used a different shot to 'illustrate' each sentence. As we reach 1900, his black and white footage spectacularly turns to color. The stories told recount the loss of American innocence: from the woes and persecution of the Mormons, the fights with the Indians, the struggle to become a state, to the turning of Utah into a testing ground for nuclear power. And beyond the power of words, Benning's camera keeps probing: do landscapes remember?

Scary hicks out in the wilderness
Cultists
Geometric shapes with unguessable meanings
Outer space shit
Evil scientist trying to tamper with the natural order and not knowing what he's doing
Vaguely shoggoth like monster*

????

*HPL's idea of really horrible monsters was fishmen. I think he would have been repelled by this sort of bodyhorror gore. Especially since he was far more interested in atmosphere than anything explicit.

I felt the movie makers were really more imitating Carpenter, and his practical effects, than anything HPL.

I mean, the things Lovecraftian I mentioned are just sort of thrown in there. There's no attempt to make any of it work with any sort of cohesion.

You guys watch RLM? I'm specifically thinking of their Best of the Worst review of, I think, Carnosaur 2.

It was supposed to be about dinosaurs. But they had some kind of set out of a space ship movie. And they added stuff about hackers. And they basically remade Aliens except used the dinosaur for the xenomorphs. Right down minor plot details and costumes.

That's how I feel about this movie. OK, it's about zombies! But we've got this old hospital set! Well then we'll make hospital zombies! And you guys like Lovecraft? We'll add tentacles and triangles! Kids love tentacles and triangles!

Great movie. I'd give it a solid 8/10, higher if I were to be generous. The points are docked mainly for the acting and some of the more awkward choices in the writing (vagueness of the hunter character, shot of sheriff in the other world/dimension at the end).

The movie was Lovecraftian as shit. It was like a checklist of a bunch Lovecraft stories.

Colour Out of Space (transformation of people into abominations), Reanimator (man of science experimenting on the dead to bring the dead to life), Shadow Over Innsmouth (cthulhu-ish sex cults, breeding of shoggoth like creatures, transformation/transition into undying race, human women selected for breeding), The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (underground necromancy pits, creatures brought to life that cannot die, necromancer seeking immortality).

this is all exactly why it's so right. it's done very well.

>>81532004

i thought it was something like that after the hallucinated scenes, but, the rifle guy specifically, 'the kid will be alright. they killed his whole family, i barely got them out of there alive."

which would imply that he was not himself part of his family, since he would have had to been killed for his whole family to be killed.

that part is what confused me.
>>
>>81532055
>which would imply that he was not himself part of his family
I figured that he didn't considered his son part of his family for not being there to protect them, that's why he was crying and later said he was sorry, I don't know. It didn't really bothered me that much
>>
>>81532166

yeah, i got that he was angry at him on some level, but i mean, that's pretty extreme.

i wish he had been some kind of demon hunter but that would not be lovecraftian.

desu it's not as if the movie couldn't have been better. with another half hour, they could have really played out the opening scenes and the 'otherworld' more. even longer. i'd have watched it for 2.5 hours.
>>
>>81532263
I just wished they didn't show the couple at the end. Ruined the whole pratical effects thing they had going on for a while.Maybe they could have expanded on the atmosphere a bit by dragging it more? I don't know. I really liked all the basement segments and how everything was paced.
>>
>>81532339

the basement segments were the climax. i've seen a lot of horror movies, but when there was that tschk shing, tschk shing sound, and then they saw the first fucked up thing ramming it's skull through a pipe over and over, it really hit hard. especially after the doctor talked about how he won't let them die, his mistakes. shit got pretty intense.

i do agree that they didn't do a good enough job with the consequence of the cop shoving the doctor through the triangle. after all i thought that the point was to go through it at some point.

and what the fuck now? does the cop and his ex wife just walk around pyramids on some astral stormscape until they starve and die to another reality?

i really don't think the movie made any negative mistakes, i think they just didn't go far enough. they should have just turned it to 11th and got involved with the rabbit holes.

Thanks, /tv/, I guess?

This movie was trash but it was fun trash. It reminded me a lot of playing Doom just fun mindless horror. It's good to see some salute to the 80s horror as well hopefully this brings on some more cosmic horror flicks.

Taking this seriously is a big mistake its not a game changing cosmic horror. Its pretty much in the same vain (only not as well made) as the mouth of madness.

It's pretty Lovecraft esque

It was a pretty good movie. Given its budget I thought it was overall a better movie than something like Life. Life is a huge budget celebrity carried film that overall still isn't as fun. That's saying something.
