Who is a director you really vibe with?

hit and miss with this guy
The Coen brothers. I wish they would make another No Country for Old Men already. Hail Caesar was disappointing.

David Mackenzie. Here's a guy who started his career writing half-decent films such as Young Adam and Hallam Foe, then absolutely fucking tanked it with the stinker Spread, with Ashton Kutcher (Anne Heche has some really, really fucking nice tits, though.)
Then, I think somebody lit a burner under his ass. Or he stopped drinking. Or he started drinking. I don't bloody well know. Whatever it was, his ass was definitely on fire, because the next moment (well, 5 years later) the absolutely mind-blowing film Starred Up (2014) was made. Holy fucking shit.
Was it a one-off? Nope. Hell Or High Water was the best goddamn film of last year. I think David's probably got a big fucking fear that he'll make another piece of shit like Spread, because by God, Starred Up and Hell Or High Water are absolute master-class cinema that everyone (who's allowed to) should watch at least once in their lifetime.
David Mackenzie is proof that you don't have to be mediocre forever, if you work your fucking ass off.

Besides Slacker and boyhood I don't think he's made a movie I don't like.

Hail! Caesar was great.

A writer is the guy with the least amount of say in the final product.
Its hard sometimes to know whats to blame, the script, the director, or the editor.

Well, whatever the case, the guy directed Spread but also directed Starred Up and then Hell Or High Water - and I imagine his ass is still on fire.

What's wrong with Slacker? It's his only perfect film.
I love a lot of film and filmmakers, but Takeshi Kitano is the only one I feel a personal connection to the way music can do. Seeing Sonatine for the first time was really profound, like looking in a mirror kind of thing
