I finally watched it last year after assuming it would be shitty. You're right, the first 30 mins captured my attention and had me laughing. So impressed considering the lack of dialogue.

For a number of reasons. Blanks may sound like a really cool practical effect but in reality they're complete shit to work with.

Firing blanks means that the rifle is going through all 8 cycles of function just as if it were firing live rounds, which again, sounds cool, but is impractical due to the low quality and inability of blanks to be fired in rapid succession without causing malfunctions.

The only way to remedy this is to do what the military does when it's training with blanks and attach something called a BFA (blank firing adapter) which allows the muzzle to retain enough power to eject the blank from the firing chamber and prevent a malfunction (which occurs anyway 50% of the time).

Not to mention blanks leave behind 3x the carbon buildup that regular rounds do, so you would have to clean your bolt carrier assembly and star chamber after every second take because the weapon will be too dirty and malfunction repeatedly.

All of this means that actors would only be able to fire off about 3-4 rounds per take unless you want to see a bunch of double feeds and failures to extract AKA """jams"""

So tl;dr, blanks don't actually work
