I doubt the engine that dreamworks/pixar use is cheap to rent, if at all. Also they tend to do 2D, 3D CG in anime is really crap, look at recent mech series or full CG. Polygon pictures have two series that are still jarring and the rest are the CG quality you expect from afternoon 5 minute shorts with a staff of 10.

They could also still be outsourcing the CG to korea like everything else, so not only do they go for the lowest bidder but the local talent disappears.
