While filming Maidstone (1970), Torn struck director and star Norman Mailer in the head with a hammer.[22][23] With the camera rolling, Mailer bit Torn's ear and they wrestled to the ground. The fight continued until it was broken up by cast and crew members.[22] The fight is featured in the film.

In 2010, he drunkenly broke in to the Litchfield Bancorp, which was in the same building as his home. He thought that he was entering his own home, and was found carrying a gun. Torn was charged with carrying a firearm without a permit, carrying a firearm while intoxicated, first-degree burglary, second-degree criminal trespassing and third-degree criminal mischief. The court sentenced him to 2.5 years in prison and 3 years of probation.

The rule of thirds and the 180 degree rule are two simple guidelines for shooting a cohesive scene in television, film or what have you.

The rule of thirds is for organizing (or Composing) sets and actors in such a way that keeps the focus on either the left, center or right thirds of the screen. It helps to avoid busy shots that might confuse the eye, and a great example would be the talking head segments in mockumentary programs, putting the focus on the expressiveness (or lack thereof) of an actor.

The 180 degree rule could be simplified (though not perfectly demonstrated) in the '4th wall' of a shot. The camera follows actors along a 180° border. With the 180 degree rule, the viewer will always be able to distinguish the placement of a character based on what is seen in an establishing shot. It's why you don't see a great deal of 360° camera pans.

Both rules can be creatively broken for interesting results, of course.
