That's the most retarded thing I've read today and I lurk /pol/
>>
Not the same

Jumpscares can be good if done correctly and are well timed / limited with good atmosphere

Only true plebs would disagree
>>
There's no physiological sense of horror from jump scares. It's not scary, it's startling.
>>
If jumpscares didn't exist and you went into a horror movie knowing there'd be none there'd be absolutely no threat behind any atmosphere or tension building. Horror relies on well-executed jumpscares and/or the expectation of jumpscares.

Being tickled can be good if done correctly and is well timed / limited with good atmosphere.
>>
He's right, but we need jump scares for tension purposes. Not just spooks.
>>
the scary part is expecting a jumpscare
>>
>>81409072
What's your favorite horror movie that doesn't have jumpscares or leads you to believe there could be ones? The only thing left for a movie to do is slow, gross-out gore.

>PG-13 corporate shitfests just fill themselves with loud noises to seem scary
>Autists think this means that jump scares in general are bad

Nobody complains about the severed head scene in Jaws or the nurse scene in Exorcist III.
>>
Find one horror movie since the 2000s that has a more suspenseful scene than the basement moment in the zodiac
>>
>>81409144
>we need jump scares for tension purposes
This is always overused.
>tension builds quickly in slasher flick
>SURPRISE IT WAS JUST THE GIRL'S FRIEND
>tension builds again
>this time it's the killer

So many fucking times this happens.

>>81409397
Yeah but slasher flicks are not known for their incredibly high quality productions.

Jump scares aren't bad it done right.

What makes me rage are noise scares. Where the scene is quiet but then the sound blasts to max volume and that makes you jump and dumbasses mistake this for being scared.

Jump scares need to be done with context in order to work. It shouldn't rely on some character moving a tiny bit and some screamy scareface popping up right behind them.
>>
>>81409173
The Hunt
>>
>>81409173
The Shining
The Thing
>>
>le jump scares are inherently bad meme

Is there any bigger of a pleb tell than this? Some of the greatest horror movies ever use jump scares to great effect. In fact, some of the most memorable scenes in horror are, in fact, jump scares. The Shining has jump scares. The scariest scene in Don't Look Now, one of the greatest horror films ever made, is a jump scare. This is so dumb. The problem isn't jump scares. The problem is when they're overly predictable and used as a crutch by lazy filmmakers who don't understand atmosphere and mood or any of the other ingredients that make up good horror.

Jesus Christ. You faggots are so contrarian. Jump scares are fucking retarded and used by hacks. So I guess that's why /tv/ relates.

Pic related. It's you fucks

this scene is a rare half jump scare

i call it a peep show since he just kinda says hi lol

i dont think anyone disputes that jump scares are bad.

>>81410976
The Thing has a few jumpscares but all of them are executed perfectly i.e. the blood test scene
>>
>>81411024
>The Shining has jump scares

No it doesn't
>>
>>81409277
>nurse scene
is that a jumpscare though? i think it's more like a tension payoff. theres a difference.
>>
>>81411047
Blood test scene, oh yeah. It has a brilliant and immediate pay off

Ghost horror movies fucking suck because BOOGIDY BOOGIDY SCARY FACE with no fucking pay off.

The Exorcist 3 has one of the few examples of a jumpscare that is legit scary and well done.

The Mothman Prophecies.

That being said, jumpscares still have their place when executed well. The heightened anxiety that follows one can leave you anticipating another that never quite comes.
>>
I think jumpscares are fine if it's not some loud instrument noise slapped on that scares you.
>>
>>81410100
>noise scares
I hate this. They make you have to turn up the volume just to hear shit, and then when the jumpscare happens itll be loud enough to wake up the fucking neighbourhood.
>>
its not necessarily a jumpscare but does anyone just get freaked the fuck out by long hair horror?
>>
Martyrs had no jumpscares and legitimately disturbed me after watching it
>>
>>81411033
I'll bet anything that if I asked you to name your top 10 favorite films, it would be stereotypical mainstream reddit bullshit. No one who has seen any horror movies made before 1980 shares your unnuanced position on this issue. I doubt you could even name five European horror films. Seriously, stop being a subhuman for a second and try to imagine an effective ghost story without any jump scares. It wouldn't work.
>>81411050
Two of the most memorable scenes in the movie are jump scares (the bathroom scene and the scene with the twins). Do you think it's not a jump scare if no one says "boo" at the end?

Here's another example of a good jump scare:

There's a difference between disturbed and scared. It seems like a lot of horror filmmakers don't understand this. Wanting to look away because what you see is scary and wanting to look away because what you see is gross are 2 different things.

Jumpscarefags B T F O
Will they ever recover?
>>
Raimi's Within The Woods had a GOAT jump scare. Carrie had a great jump scare. Friday 13th: also good for similar reasons.

Sometimes I jump at flash-scares that aren't sudden or loud (the Exorcist visual scares they added in post made me jump on occasion because I keep forgetting they exist).
>>
>>81412427
>it's only horror when it's scary
When will this meme end, feeling disgusted and disturbed still is horrifying

It takes no skill to disgust. Horror movies should be scary as the name of the genre suggests.
>>
>>81412726
>>81412427
i said disturbed, not disgusted

it takes a lot of skill to disturb me after 9+ years on this site

>>
>americans commenting on horror movies
>>
>>81412726
horror is not one genre only, anon

slasher, splatter and psychological horror aren't supposed to be scary

and yes, it takes a lot of skill to disturb or disgust someone who isn't a normalfag
>>
Jump scares aren't really scary, but the expectation of them are. If you could watch a horror movie with the guarantee that it would contain no jump scares, you would probably be a lot less scared than with the possibility of it having jump scares, even if it doesn't actually have any.
>>
So why are they called horror movies? Last time I felt scared watched a movie was probably as a kid
