There's no physiological sense of horror from jump scares. It's not scary, it's startling.

If jumpscares didn't exist and you went into a horror movie knowing there'd be none there'd be absolutely no threat behind any atmosphere or tension building. Horror relies on well-executed jumpscares and/or the expectation of jumpscares.

Jump scares aren't bad it done right.

What makes me rage are noise scares. Where the scene is quiet but then the sound blasts to max volume and that makes you jump and dumbasses mistake this for being scared.

Jump scares need to be done with context in order to work. It shouldn't rely on some character moving a tiny bit and some screamy scareface popping up right behind them.

Is there any bigger of a pleb tell than this? Some of the greatest horror movies ever use jump scares to great effect. In fact, some of the most memorable scenes in horror are, in fact, jump scares. The Shining has jump scares. The scariest scene in Don't Look Now, one of the greatest horror films ever made, is a jump scare. This is so dumb. The problem isn't jump scares. The problem is when they're overly predictable and used as a crutch by lazy filmmakers who don't understand atmosphere and mood or any of the other ingredients that make up good horror.

That being said, jumpscares still have their place when executed well. The heightened anxiety that follows one can leave you anticipating another that never quite comes.

Jump scares aren't really scary, but the expectation of them are. If you could watch a horror movie with the guarantee that it would contain no jump scares, you would probably be a lot less scared than with the possibility of it having jump scares, even if it doesn't actually have any.

So why are they called horror movies? Last time I felt scared watched a movie was probably as a kid
