BSG did that and nailed it. it russles my jimmies to see people call it the next BSG
>>
>>81393535
Serious charisma deficiency. Amos and Avarasala or even the OPA guy could be cute minor characters but the lack of a couple of charismatic actors in leading roles (Holden, I'm looking at you) really hurts it.

Also doesn't help that the story kills off the only guy that accomplished it in Thomas Jane (playing Miller, who was also a more interesting character overall, if familiar or even cliché) who isn't exactly a movie star and still stood head and shoulders above the rest, only to replace him with the really hammy martian muhreen.

It's a shame, really. The foundation is rock solid and a little more panache could've made this a big fucking hit.
>>
>>81393786
Because they didn't directly reference current events. Yes, the hunt for cylons was clearly inspired by the red scare and the fear of muslim terrorism but they didn't beat you over the head with their message.
>>
Redpill me on this show
is it worth watching?
>>
>>81393914

Best sci-fi show on tv, hands down. If you like that kind of shit, then yes.
>>
>>81393914
This >>81393931 is true but unfortunately TV sci-fi is so shit, it doesn't mean much.

Still, it is worth a watch. Solid plot and production values, mediocre acting talent, social/political intrigue and NO FUCKING CHEESE like most tv sci-fi. Overall solid show.
>>
>>81393786
>BSG did that and nailed it.
BSG also made a complete fucking mess of its religious subplot so there's that.
>>
>>81393827
Shut your whore mouth Chrisjen carries the whole show
>>
I'm on ep 5 and i really don't get where this is going. i hope there's a payoff soon because i'm fuckin bored, and i love sci-fi
>>

>Thomas Jane
Am i the only one who almost didn't recognize him? I blame the stupid hat.
Depending on how much they condensed the plot, he will probably be back by the end of the season or the middle of the next.
>>
>>81394202
>Am i the only one who almost didn't recognize him?

The rest of us have eyes and can read his name in the opening, which you should have at least watched once since it looks great.

There's really no excuse.
>>
>>81393535
Anyone have the webm of thicc chick beating le ebil general in the last episode?
>>
>>81394134
She's the most interesting character and she does a good job in it but we both know that's a complete exaggeration. The production values carry the show.
>>

The books are irrelevant for the show's problems. And regardless that he comes back you still have most of a season without him or anyone else to pick up his pace.

This really. The books live and die on the strength of their characters. Book 2 is widely considered great, and Bobby IN THE BOOKS is a beloved POV character. Bobby in the books has her shit together.

Bobby in the show is whiny, petulant, and does not have her shit together. At all. Also she has an Australian accent for some really weird reason.

Anyway, the last episodes continual tweaking of events for no good reason has killed any expectation of the show recovering. It's bizarre to see a show go from great to shit in one season, but not totally unexpected. It just makes the first season all the more amazing, for being so good.

I liked it a lot, idk. Aside from Prax and his boring-ass chapters it was great. Avasarala is awesome, don't be a hater. She literally does more in that book than she has done all season in the show.

Also Ashur is like the LAST dude I would have pictured as her head of security, this dude is just way too slimy for me.

sure, but since they are making him a composite character of that dude and her traitorous first assistant, couldn't they have found someone less gross?

or perhaps that's the whole point, Bobby will unmask him in some dramatic fashion that demures from the book and winds up being even less plausible
>>
>>81396484
Why can't he just be a chill security guy
>>
>>81395887
It suffers from the "we need an action beat every 10 minutes or the dumb american audience will lose focus" syndrome. Same reason behind Bobbie beating her superior officer into a pulp.
>>
>>81396378
Getting to know more about the crew's background, and the Earth getting blown up was the most interesting paradigm shift since the introduction of the protomolecule. Personally I think Cibola Burn and Abaddon's gate are tied for worst. Only really interesting parts of them were the stuff with the aliens.
>>
>>81396501
they cast a meme actor which means they intend to either make the character a foil in a dramatic twist, or keep him on as a protagonist sidekick in later seasons

Honestly I am struggling to care much about the Expanse universe without watching Thomas Jane stumbling through it. It's not the people who made the show's fault, it's just how the story goes, but it was better with him in it.

Depression is a relative thing.
>>
>>81404381
Nah it's just a misused word by normies to make themselves feel ''deep'' and cynical.
>>
>>81404418

You can be depressed and still do things while feeling like human garbage.
>>
>>81404608
If you can still do all of those things you're not fucking depressed, you're just being existential or whatever.
>>
>>81393535

No nudity allowead

this is the reason

Space sci-fi barely exists these days after dying for about 5 years. The others that are around are pretty episodic Firefly knockoffs where the crew are the only main characters. This is serialized, more serious of a show, and has several different plotlines happening concurrently. Even in it's heyday, there were much fewer space sci-fi shows like it than say Dark Matter.

Must admit, she looks damn good in that photo
>>
>>81393535

>How can this get so much right and be so boring?

Killing off most interesting character/best actor, Miller/Thomas Jayne

Holden and the pilot are boring characters/actors, yet they get a lot of screentime.

Everything is becoming increasingly predicable, half an episode wasted on a some dolt who invented a new engine and died, wtf was that shit ?

Why do Martians not have a distinct dialect/vocabulary like Belters do? They all sound different
>>
>>81405615
Because they're not space niggers.
>>
>>81393914
Its the new Battlestar, only the characterization was sacrificed for realistic space battles and physics.

aka fucking watch it negro
>>
>>81395887
>he just kinda reverses thrust and slips back behind the moon

Theoretically you could actually do something like this, although it would take a fuck-ton of fuel and you would need to do a full 90+ degree burn (perpendicular to the current orbit) to enter into a highly inclined polar orbit.
>>
>>81405615
A strong central government with uniform education. It's not well off educated people that make up slang.
>>
>>81393535

The minority/woman quota fucks this show hard.

Yes, you can be depressed. It just has to be a slump that you don't feel in control of and that doesn't go away. If it impedes your day to day life then it is depression. Just because they aren't a complete asocial NEET doesn't mean they aren't depressed.
>>
>>81406487
And the shitty actor quota
>>
>>81405877
>>81395887
Yeah, nothing about that was right. From the admitted fuck up to the reversing using directional thrusters. I mean shit man.

It is like watching a movie that has cars in it and none of the physics of driving cars is correct and it isn't a movie intended for children or part of the plot and universe. they just do it because they don't know any better or think no one else will realize it.

Martians are supposed to be super ethically diverse in the fluff, having been settled by pretty much every nation on Earth with the best and brightest. Each colony had a different approach to the settlement of Mars, and after independence they're slowly mixing together into a new race/nationality, although many still hold their original culture and languages from Earth.

Meanwhile Belters are just the equivalent of space white trash whose only reason for existence is because their ancestors wanted that sweet space hazard pay. They all live roughly the same and work the same jobs on the same types of ships so its became its own subculture with its own jargon.
>>
>>81405615

The area Alex is from has a distinct texas drawl. Which is funny, because out of the three main groups that settled in that area the Texans were the smallest by far. So yeah, some martians have accents.
