Most comments I see are along the lines of
>great actor, shame about Moffat's awful scripts
>he had so much potential
>if only we could've seen him written by Chibnall

Which I disagree with - I think he's had some great scripts, and a couple of mediocre ones, same as all previous Doctors.

Yeah, there's the occasional 'he's too old', 'he's boring', but they're few and far between.
>>
>>81388036
I promise to post any response or even lack of response.
>>
>>81388616
I agree with all of it, and what you said too. He has the same sort of quality era as the other Doctors, but Capaldi had more potential than them so it's more disappointing.
>>
Dubs and Jacobi is also in the Mulit-Master ep.
>>
What's the deal with Lalla Ward? I had no idea that she divorced Richard Dawkins. Does she just really love cock or what?
>>
Christmas Special 2017 spoilers.

Since class got axed Moffat liked the idea of the ''arrival'' and has adapted to use the story himself. 12 will sacrafice himself to stop the angels, however he survives but needs to regenerate because of it. 12 holds on long enough to get River out of the library and into a new body. River gets a truly happy ending and goes off, knowing they will meet again. 12, then returns to Earth, and regenerates outside this time and turns into 13. It's a solo episode, both Bill and Nardole are gone.
>>
>>81388616
>shame about Moffat's awful scripts
I've heard this argument so much but I never hear anyone explain what they actually think is bad about the scripts

it feels like "I think it's bad but I can't explain why so I'll regurgitate this thing I heard someone else say"
>>
Guys give me Ideas for weeping angel variants, I can draw great, and will post.
>>
>>81389191
>using a plot point from a show nobody watched
>giving river her like 5th ending
sadly plausible
>>
>>81389317
I think too many of them are too self-aware. If RTD's scripts were a lame soap opera, Moffat's scripts are often a self-parody.
>>
>>81389357

>>81386472
>Peter's staff

>>
>>81388998
The only disappointment for me is that Capaldi didn't stay for a 4th series. Yeah, he's done 3 series like Tennant and Smith.

But Tennant and Smith had 14 episodes per series (Capaldi has only had 13). Plus Tennant had an additional year of specials and a huge 2-parter send off over Xmas/ New Year. Smith had the 50th anniversary build up, all the hype over that and the worldwide simultaneous broadcast.

In comparison, Capaldi's run hasn't had any big memorable 'events', if that makes sense.
>>
>>81389594
Also, Tennant had two pretty big spinoffs to interact with, Smith had zero, and Capaldi had one that failed so hard it counts as less than zero.
>>
>>81389594
I remember when he was first announced and everyone was hyping him up as the next Tom Baker
>7 years at least!
>he'll be the Doctor forever!
>et cetera!
>>
>>81389705
The last three Doctors all gave multiple interviews about how they wanted to break Tom Baker's record. And, at least with Tennant and Capaldi, I think they really meant it when they started out.

It's just harder than it looks, I guess.
>>
>>81389317
Often mistakes convoluted for clever. Tries very hard to depict the Doctor as an epic superhero figure. Values cool scenes over quality drama. "How do you do fellow kids?"-tier jokes.

Basically, I just don't like his general style. He views and writes Doctor Who in a really flashy substanceless way. I don't think he's all bad though obviously, he's written some really good stuff too and even his bad episodes have interesting scenes here and there. And it's not like RTD's era as any different really. That's just what modern Who is.

I'm not expecting Chibnall's era to be much different but I'm very eager for the change.
>>
>>81389594
Capaldi will have the privilege of having the first multi-master story on screen.
>>
>>81389594
I wonder how long his Christmas special will be. Ideally, there would be an additional extra-long New Years special or something that is his final episode instead.
>>
>>81389738
When you think about it, and how long they spend actually shooting and doing press shit and being the Doctor pretty much every time you go out in public, you can see how it could get exhausting, especially for a man who's almost sixty fucking years old
>>
>>81389770
>Tries very hard to depict the Doctor as an epic superhero figure
as opposed to RTD?
>>
>>81389738
I'm sure filming the show is absolutely exhausting. It's physically demanding - these are intense scenes that have multiple takes for every shot. It's not like how it used to be in Classic where they would film it once, and if it was usable, they would call it a wrap.
>>
Clara really should have been gone after series 8. It felt incredibly forced when she stayed for Christmas. I call a bit of bullshit on the official story. I think she really fucked up when she decided to leave and needed time or money.
>>
>>81389663
>Also, Tennant had two pretty big spinoffs to interact with
He as never in Torchwood and only in one SJA episode
>>
>>81389594
Capaldi's had longer episodes, they don't just stick to 45 minutes anymore. The 45 minutes that used to be a 13th episode is now just spread out among various episodes in the series, mostly the opener and finale
>>
>>81389824
>And it's not like RTD's era as any different really
Read the whole post next time
>>
>>81389866
Last Christmas would have been a fine sendoff as well, with the Doctor seeing Clara as an old woman. It would have been unnecessary, but still a fitting end for the character. Instead, we got multiple layers of Inception bullshit so that Clara could keep traveling with the Doctor.
>>
>>81389808
>>81389839
Yeah, I'm not criticising, I was being serious when I said it's probably harder than it looks.

And I can also understand why, especially for a megafan like Tennant, they could be blinded to that the first year and think "I could do this forever", but eventually it starts to wear them down.
>>
>>81389943
Face the Raven was a solid ending too.
>>
>>81389876
Yeah, I know he wasn't on those shows. But it made Doctor Who feel like a year-round thing, not something that came along for a few months.

Compare:

>2008: Jan-Apr TW, Apr-Jul DW, Aug off, Sep-Dec SJA, Dec DW Christmas special (plus an SJA special in March).
>2015: Jan-Aug off, Sep-Dec DW including Christmas special.

There's only a few minutes less of actual DW, but there's 8 months with nothing vs. 8 months of TW, SJA, and specials.

I think that's part of why Capaldi's era seems shorter.

(Of course the other part is that we've still only seen 2/3rds of his era, which people keep forgetting, but it really does make a difference.)
>>
>>81390071
How many times did Clara die/try to leave in this show?

>Deep Breath
>Kill the Moon
>Mummy on the Orient Express
>Death in Heaven
>Last Christmas
>Face the Raven
>Hell Bent

I think that's more times than Rory died.
>>
>>81389797
You know, Moffat's thing about how you don't want to kill off a beloved character on Christmas Day, and that's why the regeneration shouldn't be a sad thing… RTD got around that by killing off Ten on New Years.

Well, I would have said it could never be huge again the way it was in 1979. But 2008… well, it wasn't as huge as 1979 in the UK, but still pretty impressive, and I think much bigger in many other parts of the world. So you never know.

There was a discussion on RADW about what Three did during all that (unspecified, but clearly not too short) time he spent dying on the way back to Earth from Metebelis. And the VNAs had him just lying there in so much pain that he couldn't get to the console, for 10 years.

But then there was a series of Short Trips later that had him save the universe one last time with Edward Grainger, gritting his teeth through the agony the whole way, but not letting Edward see him sweat. And it was in-character and believable. (Hell, real-life John Hurt basically did that for the last War Doctor box set.) And I could see Moffat wanting to pull that off on the TV show.

The Doctor could rig up some kind of containment system to keep the radiation from leaving the building. Then break the damn cage and me and Wilf run like hell, and maybe we both get a dozen X-rays worth of radiation exposure out of it.

I can dump that minuscule amount of radiation out through my trainers. Wilf, maybe he gets cancer a few months earlier than he would have and dies a bit before his 91st birthday instead of a bit after. But why risk even that? Just take him a few centuries into the future and get him some anti-radiation drugs (or gloves).

If the Time War looks like an actual war, that's just as bad as it looking like a normal episode of Doctor Who. The Time War should be almost entirely incomprehensible to lower species like us, like in Dead Romance.

You could try to do what some of the Faction Paradox stuff did, and show minor factions scrambling for advantage (or just survival) while the two big empires are at war, and even those minor factions' squabbles look like the end of the world to us. But that rarely worked for FP, and if it doesn't work, it looks like… well, like the BF War Doctor series, but with even less point.

You threaten to LEAVE, and chastise WILF for getting stuck inside the DEADLY RADIATION CAGE in the first place.

WILF is also encouraging you to LEAVE, he says he is an old man, he's had his time.

You agree and tell WILF that he's not even remotely important.
>>
>>81390876
Actually, I think RTD handled it even better than Miles. We didn't even notice the Last Great Time War. And why would we?

I mean, some lower species were pretty badly affected. Some got erased from history as if they'd never existed, but then there's nobody there to notice. Some had major events that were fallout from the War, but from inside human culture it sure looks like WWII was caused by human factors. Some had their entire histories rewritten, but since nobody was at the "eye of the storm" to remember the British Republic lasting for 350 years until reforming as the core of the World Government in 2002, how could we tell?

I always considered Simm to be a foil for 10 and Missy to be a foil for 12. Has Nardole changed now he's a regular traveller in this series with The Doctor? If so how?

I feel he has. He’s more textured, more three-dimensional. You couldn’t go through a whole series with him being as cartoonish as he was in The Husbands Of River Song. That episode was played for laughs because it was a Christmas Special. We get to learn more about him and why he’s there. He has a purpose.

What's his relationship like with The Doctor now?

They bicker. He works for The Doctor, but he’s never afraid to take him on either. He’s not shy in saying when he disagrees with something, and sometimes he’s just grumpy because he hasn’t had enough sleep. He definitely prefers the quieter life.

How does he feel when Bill joins them in the TARDIS this series?

As far as Nardole is concerned, the less drama, the better. So when a human comes on board he’s not exactly delighted. He doesn’t look up to humans either. He thinks they’re of little consequence (he’s right). I think Nardole wants to stay focused on the task he’s been given and doesn’t appreciate the distraction for The Doctor that Bill provides.

What's the dynamic like between the three?

As the series goes on, I think Bill and Nardole find they have more in common and challenge The Doctor more. Nardole grows to appreciate Bill and what she brings to the TARDIS. The Doctor has grown weary of Nardole but as the series goes on, I think he comes to appreciate what he has to offer.

What were your filming highlights this series? Were there any funny or bizarre moments on set?

Michelle Gomez makes me howl with laughter. Pearl can do any accent. Peter is a font of knowledge. And the crew are the best I’ve ever worked with. We’ve been together for ten months and we laugh a lot now. I think I drive everyone mad.

NARDOLE CONFIRMED FOR GOAT
>>
>>81394588
>Are you excited for Matt Lucas’ return in Series 10?

Moffat: I’ve been thinking for a while with Peter’s Doctor that he should have a butler, a valet, an assistant. He would want somebody to fetch and carry and do complicated tasks for him - he’d want a little expert on hand and I was already thinking about that and had quite a different idea of who that was going to be. And then absolutely coincidentally Matt Lucas who had been in The Husbands Of River Song in a tiny little role said he had really enjoyed it and would like to come back if we ever wanted him. So I pondered this for a few days and said to Brian (Executive Producer) that it would be mad to not make something out of this he’s such a popular actor. He’s so brilliant and charming and he’s already in place albeit decapitated… so we brought him back. He is The Doctor’s go-to guy. He’s not quite, as we have seen in The Return Of Doctor Mysterio the bumbling oaf he likes people to think he is - he’s slyer, more devious, more useful and he has a very shady past.

Well, it's the same complication RTD faced writing out all of 10's companions (except River). Although I think Terry and Mac writing out Zoe and Jamie (is that really the only other time this happened?) might be more relevant. After all, Moffat's just writing out the two current companions, one who's only been there this season, as opposed to writing out five years' worth of returning characters who already mostly had good endings…
>>
>le hell bent is bad meme

>>81396291
If I were Moffat, I'd try to talk Chibs into keeping Nardole around and writing him out very early next season, instead of late this season.

I understand wanting to replace the "main companion" to get a fresh start, and not wanting to try to repeat the Rose/Clara deals with her Doctor changing thing. But Nardole would provide a bit of continuity without causing the "I am still/am not your boyfriend" problem, and without getting in the way of the exciting new (Cyberwoman…?) companion.

I'd rather Bill stick around, to be honest. I want some continuity between eras too and it feels a shame to get rid of what seems like a cool character so soon. Especially since she's only the 2nd companion to not be white, and the first to be officially gay. Kinda shitty that she's also going to be a contender for the companion with the least episodes.

I'd rather she not stick around. DESU Clara was a warning of what happens when companions overstay their welcome they drag the show down and make it feel old. The Doctor should have 1 companion her his 3 series tenure, however like in the RTD the companions from previous series can show up in later series.
>>
>>81396705
Honestly, if I were totally in charge of the show, I would be trying to break away from the "season by season" mentality as much as possible, and a big part of that which be companions coming and going mid-season all the time, to the point where a whole TARDIS team leaving all at once would be a rarity.

But then what do I know, I'm a classicfag…

Anyway, I'm assuming Chibnall isn't thinking that way, and does want a fresh start for S11 the way Moffat got for S5. And, given that, I think Bill sticking around is implausible, but Nardole staying a couple episodes in is something that you might be able to convince him to do.

>>81396780
I think anon is talking about her sticking around for part of one season for 13. Surely one season with one Doctor and half a season with the next is not a problem?

people dislike colin?
>>
>>81396705
I kind of want to go through an era now where every companion only stays for one year (though with some big finish gaps obviously), and within that year we get a nice and cleanly plotted storyline from start to finish, each of them dropping out somehow at the end (ideally not dying, and with potential for them popping back in later like Martha did so there can be more of a comfy family). Just to get some rhythm and tightness back and balance it out. Rose, Amy, Clara, keeping a companion for more than one year has always ended up getting a bit unwieldy.
>>
>>81396971
If you live near Colin, you can't leave pies to cool on the windowsill or they'll disappear.

After a while, it's something you get used to. But some people just refuse to get over it.
>>
>>81396946
He actually has a point here about the difference between disliking an incarnation and actually wanting them retconned, which is pretty retarded.

There are definitely people who are upset by the mere idea of the Master contravening his own gender by becoming a woman.
>>
>>81397031
I don't see the big deal. Gomez plays the character like a man in a womans body, almost like the Master is a man stuck in a womans body and is parodying women on purpose. It's totally him because he hates women.
>>
>>81396973
I don't want a "storyline" for companions. I want them to be characters that grow organically over experience a series of separate stories. And there's no reason that has to line up by season. I'd like to see a new companion join in episode 2, and the old one leave in episode 9. Usually we'd have one companion or two, but occasionally there'd be three, and occasionally there'd even be a Deadly Assassin solo story.

I understand the marketing advantage of having "the series companion" to sell… but I don't think they've actually gotten that advantage ever with anyone besides Rose, so I wouldn't be afraid to give it up.
>>
Are being genuinely retarded when they still think/wish Missy is actually the Rani?

>The Rani couldn't care less about the Master or Doctor
>The Rani is one dimensional villain.
>The Rani just wants to be left alone to carry out her evil experiments.

So it makes no sense the Rani would be obsessed with the Doctor, nor want to even bother with him. What would the Rani get out of playing the Doctor? nothing.. because he doesn't interest her.
>>
A few months ago I woke up in the middle of the night and saw a large figure outside my room near the kitchen. I grabbed my baseball bat and ran out there. When I got there the man threw a pie in my face and left. Still gives me nightmares when I think about it.
>>
>>81397169
Maybe she sent the regenerations, which could actually be tampered with, through the crack as part as some weird science experiment on the Doctor?
>>
>>81397169
Yeah, anyone who imagines the Rani building an army of Cybermen just to give it to the Doctor does not understand the Rani at all.
>>
>>81397095
This strategy would work if we still had 26+ episode seasons every year, but that's not the case. Doctor Who is by necessity an 'event' now as opposed to something that just runs in the background that you can hop in and out of. There's a reason it has big premieres and big finales, the same reason that companions joining and leaving is a big deal complete with narrative arcs instead of something that just happens. There are no arbitrary cutoff points anymore, you can't afford them when your run of episodes is going to be over in the blink of an eye (followed by a year break) and you need money from the BBC to make a SFF drama that doesn't look like shit in the 21st century.

I went out and bought the biggest cucumber I could find in tescos today and when I got home I shoved it up my arse and pretended I was getting gang raped by 3 Slitheen each taking turns defiling my body. The excitement was only prolonged as I knew the Doctor couldn't save me from being defiled.

I think it would still work just fine.

The theory that the companion is what makes the season worth watching has never really worked. I suppose it worked for S2 Rose as a marketing success, but not as a writing success.

Meanwhile, continuity between seasons is a reason to come back and watch the next season, not a reason to skip a season. Moffat has tried to sneak that in with River, the Paternoster Gang, and now Nardole, but if he (or Chibs) would drop the idea that there needs to be a "main companion" with a "main storyline" he'd just be dropping a problem that makes it harder for him to succeed and provides no real benefit.

Trying to force a character into a preplanned narrative arc in a serial drama with multiple writers almost never works, and almost always ruins the character. Rose is the obvious example, but you can see similar things in other media (Compassion) or other franchises (Krycek in X-Files went from being a cool character to a boring plot device once they decided to give him a story arc). Meanwhile, who can you think of where that was successful. (I suppose Evelyn is a counterexample, but she's the only one I can think of.)

Characters develop naturally if you let them—even for mediocre writers. And that's how you end up with companions who are actually worth keeping around for more than a season (Jamie, Sarah Jane, Romana, Ace, Benny, FItz, …).

They should have an episode where the Doctor notices he has been filming in the same (not even a) square mile of Cardiff for years on end and its the same locations constantly. And they are the same locations in Sherlock too just in case you weren't sick of them.

When someone is in a corridor in either series, there is like literally a choice of two corridors. Its like a kids home movie or something.

That's always been something I've thought I'd do if I was Showrunner too. I'd probably try to have a "main" companion still though, and basically let that actor stay as long as they want (within reason). I think it's important for whoever plays the Doctor to have a friend on set, if the cast changes too much they might get bored quicker
