I'm a complete novice working on my first screenplay. So far I'm really paranoid about including unnecessary details so my first draft is a skeletal outline. But when I look at Tarantino scripts, he has a popping sense of humor that you can tell when you're reading. I'm not quite sure if I should even include POV or camera panning directions. I'm sure no one will take me seriously until I've submitted my fifth draft to an editor.

can somebody help me out with different styles and types of film grain and definition? Like, examples of some of the basics and what they look like? especially older styles from the early 2000s, there were lots of tv shows filmed in..something. I cant describe it other then comfy. it just looks peaceful and comfy compared to today

Yeah. I've been watching Death Note though, been putting it off for years. It's neat but since I started getting into anime fairly recently with One Punch Man, Jojo's, Gurrenn Lagann, etc. it's kind of a shock to see an anime that's really more about a cat-and-mouse game than the usual colorful exaggerated emotions I'm accustomed to.

This dialogue seems pretty generic. I like when Johnathon says "I dunno man, it ain't looked like nothing I ever saw. Sure as shit didn't act like it.", it makes him sound uneducated, and that's kind of interesting.

Are these names permanent? I've never heard of an Asian Sam, and you shouldn't keep both Kira and Johnathon.

I was always taught not to describe your characters in too much detail, more their personality traits than anything. I recognize that I'm lacking in that department as well.

I've considered toying with that idea, a bit of this I want to be Jonathan's character progression as well as Kira's.

You should be fine so long as you try and put your own spin on it, make it interesting.

So, I'm trying something for a story. The antagonist has something on him that lets him go back a short distance in time (only has a few charges). He's trying to locate another character's secret base.

The other character has a collection of magical things. So, the idea is that the collector has something he sends out to kill the antagonist after he gets pissed off enough. Like a creature of some sort. A creature who has perfect tracking, and goes in a straight line...

Is it a neat idea to have the antagonist find the base by recording measurements on the creature, going back in time once or twice, changing spots, recording more measurements, and triangulating the location of the secret base?

I'm almost finished piecing together my story and writing the first draft. A movie recently came out that shares about .05% of the plot and setting of my story, and although that number is so low I worry that fools might think it inspired me.

try to avoid camera panning and pov shit, that's for the director to work out. only include it if it's 100% necessary to the story, like an important transition, or a pan that later reveals something. QT gets away with that because he's the director and he has a very solid vision in his head as he writes. I mean, if you're going to direct it then go ahead, but avoid camera direction if you're aiming to sell it.

Editing is a job, they make it how the director wants it. They can try out different ways of editing it, but the final desiscion isn't up to them.

check the special features on the Traffic Criterion Collection. They have a segment about getting the proper look for their film. They go over filters, lenses, etc. Pretty educational. listening to the director commentary on films that interest you might give you greater insight, also. google around for film and lens breakdowns and info.

I'm currently making a short animated experimental film.

Basically it's handrawn stop motion animaton (1000s of peices of paper) but instead of actual drawings it's mathetmatical formula's that if graphed make a picture. From what I've gathered you register your script with the WGA, submit it to a few different firms that act like a library for scripts but they have people sifting through submissions for anything of interest, and you get an agent to help you have even the remotest chance of getting the attention of a production company if you're some nameless fuck.

And the film is Passengers. That shitty space romance flick with Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. My story involves a colonization attempt and suspended animation, but that's the only thing the two have in common. The rest is about as different as it can possibly be. I only ever heard of the Passengers title, but I never looked into the story since I'm not interested in anything those two actors are starring in. Then I saw something somewhere, heard the plot, and I felt my heart drop. But it might be a good thing. With space movies being more common, I think partially due to the fame and success of Star Wars, it might allow for my story to be picked up.

I've got a huge idea that I keep working on from time to time, when I'm not working on this current project. It's the combination of 3-4 ideas that I had for other movies, but they were all loosely and not so loosely connected so combining them made sense. I think a miniseries might be the best format - the world that I'm building has so much potential that it would be a shame to not fully explore it. If I could get established as a writer so I was in a position to pitch ideas then this would be the first idea I'd pitch. I would want to work with some other writers to bounce my ideas off of them and help me refine them. Hopefully that's a future I'll get to experience.

understand why that stuff scares you. you could get into psychology. Carl Jung discussed archetypes, and the collective unconscious - something that we all share deep within our psyche. Some fears are so ingrained in our mind that it's literally in our DNA. Once you learn what those fears are you can decide how to best represent them in your movies.

make sure that you're not being a perfectionist or simply hating your own ideas for no reason. Ideas are rarely birthed being perfect. People need to refine them constantly, and sometimes the end result will be very different from what you've started with. If you know a person who's also creative you could see if they would be willing to collaborate, or at least hear your ideas and give you input. Make sure to tell them to be brutally honest though. I had an interest in writing 14+ years ago, and I was writing down premises for stories. Not long after that I looked back at those ideas and realized they were all dogshit. Embarrassingly dogshit. Then I had an idea that wasn't as bad, and I worked with that for a while. As this was going on I would have the occasional idea for something new. Now I've got 8+ solid ideas that I'm excited about, and I've had those ideas for a few years so they pass the "wait 2 years and see if it's shit" test.

Just keep refining your ideas and the refining process itself, and the good ideas will eventually come to you more frequently and with greater ease. Don't give up. If you need more encouragement then look at the movies playing at your local theater and realize how shitty they are. You can do better than that.

If you're going for cheese you could easily make this movie yourself. Start drawing storyboards dude. If you got together with some friends, rehearsed lines, scouted for locations, built props and sets, assigned roles and positions, and set some sort of shooting schedule then you could make this in your spare time. And you would have a few hundred vaporwave artists begging to have you feature them in your film so they can get some exposure.

I get like 90% of my inspiration for visuals through music, and it kinda sucks because I know I'm not talented enough/don't have enough resources to pull off what I really want to shoot. All I can do is write, and even then only when I get in the mood of it. it sounds like you should paint or draw your visuals. you don't need to be a Picasso or Michelangelo, all you need to do is convey the mood and visuals that you want to write about. Once you have the visuals you can examine them and then let the descriptions and words come to you at their leisure. Guillermo del Toro is a visual screenwriter. He carries a few notebooks with him at all times and they're filled with ideas and sketches. It sounds like you're a similar writer.

I heard it expressed best as "The brain is for creating ideas, not storing them". find a visual medium that allows you to create scenes as fast as you can imagine them, and then you can save them for later to draw inspiration from them.

Clinical depression can be a good thing for an artist or writer. It gives you something to draw ideas from.

1.) I like it
2.) I really like it
3.) Has potential
5.) this goes for 1 also: it's almost impossible to have a truly unique idea. that doesn't mean your creative process should be "it's like (movie) but (tiny difference)", but it does mean that it's ok if your movie shares elements from various movies. We all get our inspiration from somewhere, and it's more than acceptable to be inspired from a movie that you enjoy. If writers kept crumpling up paper every time they noticed that it was vaguely similar to some movie then no movies would ever be made. If you have an idea but then you realize it's exactly like another movie then try to rework the idea in a way that makes it different. I talked about Carl Jung and the archetypes earlier - almost every character in very story fits one or more of these iconic and intrinsic archetypes, but it's the details that separates them from one another. When you get into movie theory and deconstructing films into their most basic elements then you realize how similar all movies are. Your writing can share a similar premise to other movies, but work on making the story unique and you should end up with something that you'll be content with. This one has potential, but almost too much potential. There are so many ways you could go with this. Of all the ideas so far this is the one that you should spend the most time with. I don't mean that like it's shit and you need to fix it, but it's got a lot of potential and you need to figure out how to build the world, determine the laws of the universe with regards to the psychic powers and the supernatural, and which direction to go with the story.

4.) If you wrote some lyrics and used them to express your depression then this could be great. Jazz doesn't even have to fuckin rhyme, so the lyric writing becomes even easier. It's an interesting premise, and the depression angle could almost guarantee that this gets made. Animated/partially animated films are really getting into the feelings aspect of humanity, so tackling a topic like depression would be a great approach.

verdict: you've got a lot of ideas to work with and they all show promise. as far as your other ideas go, those are good beginnings. A lot of my ideas began with only a premise, and the story came later. Work on those as the ideas come to you. You have so many ideas that it's fine if a few of them sit on the backburner and you only bust them out every so often to write a line or two to flesh out the idea.

I dunno if you'd want to leave those posts up. Some scoundrels with their foot already in the door will regularly trawl the internet looking for free ideas so that they can crank out a script overnight.

Maybe that's my problem, because I can't think of what direction to go with in terms of story.
An early idea was that the psychic girl and law enforcer would be trying to expose a presidential nominee that had ties to white surpremacist groups, but it's too close to Trump shit, although this was going to be a white woman. Can't really go with the expose "white supremacy" plot because white supremacy has been exposed multiple times with little change. Another idea had the girl go off the rails and become an almost unstoppable Christ-like figure and symbol for black resistance, and he has to stop her, but I don't want to make her out to be a bad guy. My biggest problem with this idea is that I can't get a handle on the characters, I don't know any gang members or what being in a gang would feel like.
I can't think of an actual reason for him to want to help her, "she's a little girl" doesn't seem good/selfish enough. No matter what backstories/traits I give them they're flat and uninteresting.
I've actually been working on this one the most but have still gotten nowhere.

For the psychic story, compile a list of films which are similar to it in some shape or form, then watch and study them. Watch some gang films. a part of writing is studying the topics that you write about. it helps you write convincing characters and scenarios. and fleshing out characters doesn't have to reach Kubrick-tier. Some characters are best left mysterious. Storytelling is deciding what to tell the listeners/viewers/readers and what not to tell them. I keep recommending this, but you should get into psychology and Carl Jung. It will help you tremendously when it comes to character development. and if you have well developed characters then the dialogue practically writes itself.

I've watched The Fury, Carrie, Logan, Akira, Legion, Leon: The Professional, Menace II Society, A Clockwork Orange, Strange Days.
I have others gang movies I downloaded or in my Netflix list but I haven't got to them because of how disillusioned I am with the whole thing.
I'mma watch that Jung video linked earlier when I wake up in the afternoon, but even with characters I have no story, maybe setting up the world more will help so I need to learn how to do that.

Rewatch those movies and view them with a microscope when you do. Trace the plot, character arcs, how information is given to the viewer, etc. I'll watch a movie as a viewer, then go back and rewatch it as a coroner doing an autopsy to see how it all works. Try to watch 1-2 movies a day until your queue is finished. Keep notes of what elements you like and what you dislike.

I believe you'll like Jung. The guy was a genius, and all of his material is available online for free. And if you feel that you're in a rut you should look into this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoGdMpdZXzs I'm not trying to shill for that guy, but his self-authoring suite helps people significantly. Between writing, film studying, and composing, you seem to have a general idea of what you want to do with your life. Doing that self-authoring program would help you create a road map, help you flesh out the details from how to get from point a (now) to point b (then). If you google around you might be able to find that program for free, too. By doing that program you'll help yourself with your writing and composing, and the culmination of all of those things might help you with your depression.

So I recently my first proper screenplay (horror movie, slasher/monster-type thing) and I'm working on my second one (sci-fi action movie). Now both are gonna need a couple of rewrites so we're a long way off, but straight up; how do I get to getting them made?

Neither are low-budget shit, I wrote them with a Hollywood budget in mind. Do I send my scripts to movie studios? Should I move to L.A.? (I don't even live in America) Should I start a Kickstarter or some bollocks?
I guess most people say I should make short/low-budget films to get some kind of start and maybe find a job in the industry to work my way up.

Probably a dumb question but interested to hear some thoughts, need to bump the thread as well.
