I'm pretty sure the 007 franchise is working like the Final Fantasy franchise in video games. There's like 15 of those and they share some very similar elements, characters, and themes across all 15 (+ several spinoffs and sequels) and they have very similar stories, BUT they are not sequels but a percentage of the time and characters change appearance but rarely change personality.

Same with Bond. There's a few direct sequels here and there, but for the most part, it works like Final Fantasy.
