I got to say that I thought that was the best episode of the expanse so far. Or do I just think that because I was drunk and stoned at the time.

And on another note, they actually found organic material in the asteroid belt. It's no protomolecule but you never know.

Honestly, I think this is bullshit. It would take a looong time to slingshot though the moons without engines. Apollo took three days just to get to the Moon, and the Moon is 348e3 km from earth. while Ganymede is 1070e3 km from Jupiter, and the distances between the moons can vary to more than three times this distance. Having only 4 bodies (Ganymede, Callisto, Io and Europa) with enough mass to matter is an aggravating factor. It would make sense if they let the plot to allow Alex to use engines when in close proximity to them.

Gosh

they are so fucking great

I thought it was so weird watching it, I'm not a science guy but one thing I have felt and enjoyed about the expanse was how grounded in reality things were. Sure its still sci-fi but theres no instant teleporters or lazer cannons and shit.

As this scene was happening even in my peasent brain I knew it was way off mark and seemed like he should have taken ages to fly around literal planets when it took them at most a few hours to track down the daughter.

Props to them

also
>real bobbie

>show bobbie
beats information out of martens and defects to earth when her suspicions are confirmed .

both paths dont matter after she leaves earth and while the show misses some great scenes i think defection makes more sense then a soldier just deciding on his own to work for a politician of another government and remaining a soldier . i kinda wish they kept the parts where she got to know earth by walking around on normal earth streets and not fucking slums.

all the moons he slingshot were relatively well aligned and roci on thrusters still has more deltav then anything we ever built (after it left the atmosphere) .even him coming very close to the small moons on the gravity assist makes sense .

what makes no sense in the expanse universe is him not being instantly detected when he got into visual range of that martian ship . the ships systems would detect him even beyond visual range automatically and instantly as they have active sensors running especially if they're in the jovian system and dont wanna run into stray rocks .also the way he kills almost all his forward momentum and goes into a retrograde orbit near instantly means he wasnt going that fast .

also i think you dont understand the timescales of the expanse . like the eros chase took place over many days but seems much faster in the show, i suspect the gravity assist was like a week or so or they fucked it up big time.

>>81362679
>>81362695

Hey anon are you from Israel?
>>
>>81363715
I'm guessing in universe, as most ships have their drive running nearly all the time, standard sensors look for either a transponder signal (as civilian ships would keep those running all the time) or the drive plume, as that would be a very obvious marker of the ships location, plus you could analyse the plume to figure out what kind of ship it was. Using active sensors is probably avoided because if you're running silent it would give away your position and if you painted another warship that would probably be considered an escalation (equivalent to switching on targeting radar and painting another countries ships/planes with it today).
>>
>>81363885
'painting' is the same as these days with war planes, focusing your radar on the enemy, im saying they were all running with active radar in all directions since the jovian system was under martian control and it was no secret . they were not trying to stay quiet they were patrolling to find ships trying to sneak through exactly like the roci did .
and yea transponders and plumes is how civilian ships are tracked but burning really far away and then quietly coasting in freefall until you're next to the enemy is a well known and widely used tactic in the expanse and the reason that any millitary ship that is not completely turned off and quiet has its active sensors on to detect sneaking ships.

i mean there's even the example of the 3 free navy ships ambushing the rocinante going from ceres to the ring because they were coasting to ceres with everything turned off and happened to come across them
>>
>>81363993
All fair points, I'm not saying there's a perfect answer (the show staff themselves have even said the scene doesn't work), I'm just going with a "theoretically, it could work like this under the right circumstances"
>>
>>81363993
>>81363715
>detect him even beyond visual range automatically
The Rocci was supposed to have no emissions in RF or the main drive. That was the whole point of the elaborate slingshot manuevor

> the way he kills almost all his forward momentum and goes into a retrograde orbit near instantly
With thrusters, yeah that was bullshit.

> also i think you dont understand the timescales of the expanse
>i suspect the gravity assist was like a week or so or they fucked it up big time.
Really? Because I'm pretty sure the crew on the ground weren't there for that long.
>>
>>81363993
shit i got the spoiler wrong
the free navy ships ambushed the roci going from ceres to tycho not ceres to the ring , they later went from ceres tot he ring and were attacked by 2 fast ships that burned hard and overshot them to get to them fast.
>>81364081
the only way it would work is if the roci is still flagged as part of the martian navy in all their vessels which it is not since the martian navy is not fucking retarded as a rock at this point in the books . anyways that whole scene was either sped up a gorillion times or ridiculously inaccurate .

what actually happened after the lab (some of it might be next ep):they all went back to the somnambulist after the lab , got kidnapped by avisarala's black ops team, beat them up and escaped while there was another clusterfuck and the station was being bombed. went to some remote airlock to go outside while alex used the confusion of the clusterfuck to fly in while shooting off a couple of torpedoes and rescued them.
>>
>>81364273
>The Rocci was supposed to have no emissions in RF or the main drive. That was the whole point of the elaborate slingshot manuevor
true but the LIDAR would have bounced off the hull just fine (especially that close) and the design of the ship is in the martian ship register . detecting an unexpected martian ship running quiet that close would have instantly alerted the crew.
you can do all sorts of sneaky stealth stuff in the expanse universe but never that close up and against a patrolling ship with active sensors on . roci isnt stealth coated and even with stealth coating it wouldnt do shit that close up.
>With thrusters, yeah that was bullshit.
yea , he killed all momentum in like 3 secs , even if he was going with that moon's direction of orbit (so it looked slow relative to the moon) that is way too slow to perform a gravity assist in less then a few months in the jovian system , either that or he performed a 100g maneuver which would have ripped him to pieces and maybe broken the ship.
>Really? Because I'm pretty sure the crew on the ground weren't there for that long.
yea that's why show timescale makes no sense . in the books they are there around a day and alex burns normally towards them when they ask for evac.
>>
>>81361428
10/10
>>
>>81360029
Even the PDC's would be overkill. It might shrug off small arms fire because they just pokes tiny holes in its flesh but the PDC rounds look 20mm or bigger and they're moving much higher velocity - anything fleshy would just break apart under that kind of impact. Because it's protomolecule all the bits would still be alive for sure, but no longer ambulatory.
>>
>>81362828

its not actually hard to kill , these are demonstration prototypes , the moment they start 'regenerating health' they have bombs implanted inside them that blow them up . its how why the one bobby met exploded . they only need to shoot it a couple of times and run away .
also major spoiler : that specific one they can communicate , that one gets rid of its bomb, gets on the roci and plants a chunk of protomolecule on it that stays undetected until 2 books later.

I like this show a whole lot, but some of these scenes are kinda dumb. Not even getting the science wrong dumb. Just plain old dumb.

Like take this guy. The way he sprayed bullets in their general direction should have killed half the crew. It would have been better if he went down without getting a shot off and then having Amos get shot by the bitch doctor lady.

They did the same thing a couple episodes ago too when they saved that lady from those thugs on the freighter with how Holden and Amos just walked in front of all their bullets.

Also, why didn't they have a guard outside their little base, or at least some sort of detection device. Talk about getting caught with your pants down.

I didn't understand that since MARS ALSO HAS A SKY, WIDE OPEN SPACES, AND A FUCKING HORIZON THAT GOES ON "FOREVER".

The main problem I have with it is that they could still have used the exact same footage and passing yet merely changed some text and dialog to make us think that each scene was a long long time from the previous scene. They sorta did that already with the pilot just sitting on his ass playing with beer cans.

Her involvement with Avasarala is different in the books, but the show's version is even more dangerous to Mars, or at least the part of Mars this dude represents. Which he doesn't in the books, but alright, nevermind that.

He really didn't do all in his power to stop her.He should have.. The only plausible explanation is that he assumes Avasarala knows already.

Book shit doesn't matter, this is a TV show. Reading the source material for any video entertainment has never been a prerequisite. All the content you are meant to know is contained within the tv show/movie. If they left shit out, it is "bad writing/editing". Never ever ever compare books to video entertainment. There's no point at all.

You sound a bit too eager to push a point which has nothing to do with what I said. Kinda dense of you.

A bookfag can assume where the show's version of Bobbie's story is going because a bookfag has foreknowledge of things which will happen in the show. Unless of course, the show decides to completely change everything which it clearly has no intention of doing. What the fuck are you even trying to say.

The obvious implication of my original post was that that he might not have believed she could make it out of the Martian embassy. There was a guard outside. She was already dead. There's like 100 things wrong with that embassy and all the scenes invovled. Pretty much like some high school students decided to make a play about the white house, but had never seen nor been to it and just make shit up. That's extremely common in pretty much all movies and tv shows that involve any type of military/police force/trained people of any kind.

What they made a key part of Bobbie's story is her knowledge of a faction within Mars working with the protomolecule. Bookfags know where this is leading to and know how important it is. It makes no sense for this dude to spill it out and let Avasarala know about the protomolecule goblin and that Mars is working to obtain it. In your anger at this episode's inaccuracies, why haven't you considered all other failings of the show?

Areas described to have much lower gravity than earth are clearly filmed and appear to be in 1G without attempts to hide it. Or the lack of facial contortions in 15G maneuvers? The creators of the show are aware of this as they are aware of the fuck up in this episode. What's the difference?

The garish and impractical "sci fi" interfaces of all computers in the show that look and behave like Winamp skins?

Muh sound in space XD

Why do you suddenly care about this one issue? Perhaps you didn't actually catch it yourself but read about it online and now you're trying to act smart here?

It's fucking pointless debating this. The writers themselves have outright told you that the "science" is only there for flavor in order to immerse you into the world. Of course a physicist won't be equally immersed as someone not in the know. The problem is that everyone on 4chan is a physicist. That they choose to spend their time shitposting online is no indication that the above statement is anything less than fact, why, surely it is their prerogative as intellectuals to jack off to as many animes as they want while shitposting garbage. Do they sound like 15 year olds parroting second hand knowledge because being a smartass online is more important than enjoying a tv show? No, you're imagining it.

Every source I've read says that humans cant hold their breath in a vacuum. Is that true?

You can close your mouth pretty tight but that wouldn't keep air from rushing through your nose and tearing sensitive olfactory tissue apart. Your epiglottis can close but it looks like its better at keeping air from rushing in and useless at keeping air rushing out.

>>
>>81376913
Those are made for the expressed purpose of teaching readers though. I'd wouldn't compare them with DC or Marvel comics for following physical laws, let alone a live action science fiction series meant for entertainment.
>>
>>81376925
Not to mention the protomolecule feeding off energy. It could've easily sipped the probe's batteries dry in seconds; it grew fucking huge on Venus.
>>
>>81377019
>>81376925
That's because it isn't very corrosive on Venus' surface. Instead the sulfuric acid is far above it where the atmosphere is less dense. They basically were saying in the show that there's sulfuric acid clouds on the surface now instead of at high altitude.

Which wouldn't corrode things as fast as it was doing so in that scene. In fact, you could just dip the entire probe in pure sulfuric acid and it would be fine for much longer than they showed.

>>81377041
