well, if the leftovers had just been "yo this shit happened and now nothing mystical has happened since, oh wow people are freaking the fuck out" it would've been fine. But damon lindelof can't write. So whenever he can't do something organic (always), he drops in some magical bullshit so he can force a character move. And then acts like it shouldn't matter that he's constantly using literal magic to trigger character development. As it isn't about the magic, its about the characters. Now here's some more literal magic.

It completely invalidates any sort of attempt at human drama the leftovers has the pretense of exploring and makes it literally nothing but a dull continuing version of the twilight zone.

reminder the big catastrophe at the end of season 1 is the cult of old fat chainsmokers sneaking into people's houses while they're sleeping and arranging mannequins in the positions people were in when they vanished, then leaving. no one detects this while its happening. it causes a riot.

I enjoy the show but I do find one of its tricks is the looming musical score. First season was the intro along with the theme. But if you were to take away the background music that always creeps up the show would not feel so ethereal. It really plays on this spiritual awakening concept and just like religion it incorporates almost surreal music to give you an emotional response.

Take out the musical score and the show wouldn't even be half as popular.
