Heinlein himself is on record as saying that he considered Starship Troopers an experiment more than anything. His motivation in writing Starship troopers was to write an exaggeratedly Militaristic culture in a sympathetic light -- not because he thought that was an ideal culture, but more to see how people would react, and just how far he could go.
