It's funny because Ghost in the Shell was considered a deep movie in 1995. The only reason it isn't considered deep in 2017 is because it was around in 1995 to explore the themes it did and they became commonplace after the fact.

But even if GitS never was deep in any capacity, a movie that explores some sort of philosophical concept is by definition deeper than one that doesn't explore anything beyond pretty lights and gun battles, the latter of course being the 2017 adaptation.

Seen and here are my shitty thoughts
- only seen the original movie and not stand alone compex since the script is a mesh of the two right? So I couldn't decide if the parts I didn't know we're true to the story.
- I know scarjo is playing a robot but she is very crappy at it. The way she walks during the interegation scene made me laugh and when she's her speech is pretty stale I get that but it sounds forced yet bad.
-really disappointed by the visuals in the movie. The big holograms looked like shit. Like they just had 3 holograms in a scene and just enhanced everything to be bigger.
-pretty much ruined the movie for me was when they discovered what happened to them and scarjo starts saying her Jap name and it just killed the immersion for me cause it's all played by these Americans. I've never cared about the stupid race culture roles in movies untill that scene.
-story was really slow which made me start to not pay attention to the story itself and start picking apart the movie as a whole with everyones performance.

K you have a point, we really need to see more Asian actresses BUT what I don't like is the idea of giving the role to an unknown actress just cos she's Asian.

I did not like Daisy Ridley's performance as Rey in TFA and she was an unknown white girl. They should have cast an experienced person. At least John Boyega actually acted good and knew what to do in the scenes but Daisy you can tell was very inexperienced.

Problem is that there hardly is any Asian actresses in Hollywood unless Hollywood rings up and asks China or Japan to send their best actresses over for screen tests.

I've seen everything GitS except the manga sequel. I enjoyed the movie, it was definitely a dumbed down take, but the same could be said for parts of SAC for example, every other adaptation has had alerted plots and characterizations so i don't have an hard time accepting this as just another take. The stoic nature of the major is not a simple thing to attain. It does not mean being emotionless.

I mean, the lore of the original things is extremely difficult even for me to truly grasp (yea call me a pleb). But the major actually went through the military meat grinder, was born into that body. Has a somewhat distant sense of humor.

SAC was treading new ground, though. It dealt more with the social side of the impact that technology may have going forward. It's even named for a hypothetical kind of social movement enabled by greater connectivity and flow of information. It brought a new angle to the IP and tried to be its own thing.

The reason why the major is so effective at what she does is not because she is struggling, somewhat.

In the original works she was more or less born into that body. She had some reservations about humanity, because she chose bodies based on projections of what she would look like.

But eventually, in the later parts she kinda chose the really spooky metaphysical. And not so much the initial struggle. Talking about ghosts, thinking about the mystical for a little bit I think. I think that from the scene where she assassinates the politicians who were naughty (?), she already more or less felt comfortable in her skin.

Yea I get it, you jews want to make big bucks with weird concepts, but you chose a concept that goes way over the head of most of your audiences, and which execution does not allow you to water it down even a little bit.

I saw it yesterday, I haven't read the comic book or seen Mamoru Oshi's movies but it's pretty good, it has some plot holes but cinematography, scenography and music are pretty good.
The main problem with philosophical concepts is that they introduce them and not expand, something like: "Do memories define who we are?" "Well, you have to consider that memories, wait you have to go shooting around, bye"

THEY CHANGED ALOT OF STUFF from when I saw it in a test screening. The most glaring change was the story. The version I saw focused more on the philosophical questions being presented. There was more of a focus (and it was explained better) on the PERMISSION an individual had to give before anyone could access their brain. IT HIT ALOT HARDER in the end when the Dr tells Major that THEY NEVER NEEDED HER PERMISSION. That was altered, and I felt like that scene didnt really mean anything in the theatrical cut. The theatrical version was more about the Major's backstory and her finding out who she was. In the version I saw, that stuff was backseat to the philosophical questions. Yes, she goes to visit her mother, but the ending scenes of her visiting the grave and then telling her mother she didnt have to visit there anymore were tacked on. In fact, in the version I saw she didnt even tell the woman she was her daughter. I can go on and on with the changes guys, but here are a couple of the bigger ones:

Watched camrip of it few days ago and liked. Maybe because it's the only movie I watched in literally 8 years besides the camrip of Rogue One and Dredd. Well this one is better than Rogue One but worse than Dredd.
