It's not entirely down to their perception either since the directors go out of their way to reinforce the support along those idealogical lines. Yes, it was weird that the reaction to Sansa being raped was so out of proportion compared to Theon's torture and complete mental breakdown but the directors also treated the former very seriously while the latter made Theon's mutilation comedic.
