The EU, Expanded Universe, was the collection of all star wars media released before 2914. This included video games, books, comics, tv shows, and other sorts.

Anything released after 2014 would be exist in a "Canon" timeline, that would not contradict itself. In order to keep the continuity the Lucasfilm Story Group was created to ensure all future products would fit cohesively.

There was some fine stuff in the EU, better than what's current canon (Let's be real: Rebels is pretty garbage.)

However, there was a lot of EU that was just stupid too. The EU's problem was a lack of editorial control. Disney has incredibly strict editorial control, but what they are directing the franchise to is ... Not too good.
