I liked it.

I do agree that the city missed that nostalgic feel the original anime achieved. Everything was "too clean" or "too shiny". They still got some scenes right but it didn't feel the same on every scene as it should've been.

Good plot, maybe too simplified (this was prolly done on purpose to like the western audience) but it treated the original movie's main plot point very well.

Scarlett was fine too. She didn't look as agile as the original Major but I honestly cannot imagine any other high-profile actress doing that role better.

7/10 for me.

It had the worst acting of any big-budget movie in ages. Worse than Warcraft or anything else I can think of as of late.

However, the props and physical sets were fantastic.

Lots of little touches I liked too. I noticed the weapons the Garbagemen used were like pirated, 3D printed, cast ceramic or something, still in their molds. It's clear a lot of work went into this movie, but most aspects were ass.

I was actually all for casting a big name actress whatever her race but then the whole "she was Japanese the whole time" twist basically took a huge shit on everything.

By that I guess you mean that it felt like a super hero origin story. Well for those who haven't seen it, it had hardly any action in it and was very dialogue driven.

But I do understand when you said it did have that super hero formula of an origin story but I actually loved their decision to do this.

As a standalone movie it was great finding out her true identity instead of them keeping it open like they do in the anime because it works well to do this in the anime and manga because there is tons of sequels but as a standalone which may not get a sequel: this had a great ending to close the story as it ends on a positive note.

Also remember that the director of the 1995 movie liked it and visited the set a lot while they were filming.

It looked like the Matrix crossed with Blade Runner, but managed to appropriate nothing more than the style while retaining none of the substance. This movie was fucking retarded, simplified and reworked the plotline to be as dumb and have as little impact as possible, such as the interrogation scene with the garbage driver, which was completely incorrect from the original movie but they didn't bother using the Puppet master plot at all. This tried to be a prequel/remake and failed in both regards, the story works when everyone has cybernetics not just the major. They mashed things from Arise and SAC and the whole origin story was godawful. Mostly pissed about the boat scene, they did it backwards and the reason why the major sinks down into the water was completely lost. It deserved to fail.
