Yeah, I mean it's "visually striking" and all, but also way too futuristic.

Because the live action's city is a fictional futuristic one while the animated film's city is basically Hong Kong.

Those giant holograms seem like something that could only exist for the benefit of the audience.

Actually I thought they did a good job with the city. You couldn't really tell where you were, it felt futuristic but not TOO unrealistic. There were a lot of practical effects which I found surprising.

Because they're hack frauds that don't understand how different films made by different people in different years are actually different. The nü-GITS city is pretty blatantly supposed to be Akira's Neo-Tokyo. Neon signs, spotlights, giant holograms. Absolutely no relation to the grounded, Kowloon-esque New Port City from GITS.

It's like if a gook watched the LotR trilogy and then the Harry Potter films and made Rohan look like Hogwarts in his "homage".

And this is New Port City, from Ghost In The Shell.

People praise the city but I actually think it killed it for me. It felt too artificial. Like when tourists visit North Korea and it looks amazing with all the lights and visuals. However it's empty and just a shell.

The city felt empty when it should have been chaotic like Hong Kong or some heavily populated area.

I still don't know how they managed to fuck that shot up in the new movie, when the new movie was using actual cameras and that shot was achieved by faking how a camera works.
