What was the message of this film?

Real lolita shit.

>What was the message of this film?
Stop watching trash
>message

it's as glossy and shallow as the industry it portrays. Which is fine imo.

>GADIKAA GADDIKAA
>>81232756
Pretty much the same message as that "South Park" episode where Britney Spears shoots herself in the head.
It's about Los Angeles, and "fame culture" in general. It demands youth and beauty, puts it on a pedestal, and then destroys it.
Refn is a 16 year old girl in an adult man's body and he's also a necrophiliac pedophile
Beauty isn't everything, it's the only thing

Whats the message of this film?

electronic song starts playing in frame perfect shot cinematography
>>81232756
to get your shekels
>>81232916
does it have something to do with woman and red color?
I don't understand how fanning's character thought she was hot shit
Like literally every model was hot shit when they were young and innocent
Also the film wasn't nearly as scary as it could have been
A lot of wasted potential in scenes
Just rewatch suspiria desu

kinda
>also why did she come back for more did she enjoy it
laeR atiloL iuhs
>finally, I have become The Neon Demon.
What did she mean by this?
>>81233149
Im not sure, since the other character was the neon demon.
stupid film anyway.
>>81233089
she was pure

>>81232756
>you will never watch THE NEON DEMON in a theatre again.
>>81233089
Hi, Dakota!
>>81233258
Anyone else hard after watching this webm?
>>81233290
>tfw watched it twice, was all alone the second time
Probably my best cinema experience
The medium is the message
>>81232756
I watched this movie twice back to back. The second time with the commentary with Elle and Refn turned on. It makes the entire experience 10x better if you watch it back to back like that since it's not a long movie and all of the details are fresh.
>>81233469
Is the commentary any good?
>>81233419
When i watched it, the theatre was full of people, i don't think there was any place left.
It was really disturbed by the movie but i should have watched it a second time.
It's my favourite Refn movie for sure
that all women are sluts
>>81233499
Relentlessly fascinating.
Superior actress, superior looks, superior personality... Superior Fanning.
who is this neon demon?
>>81233469
>>81233630
It's great because Refn in some ways is, and in other ways not at all what you would expect.
Personality wise he seems kind of like you would expect but the way he makes a movie is not at all. The dude is literally winging it the whole time.
He is the polar opposite of a meticulous planner like Michael Mann or somebody that knows literally everything and every detail about the subject he is shooting.
What is surprising are the things that Refn freely admits he doesn't know.
>>81232756
The whole thing was a front for Refn to kiss Elle
>>81234058
This WOULD be impressive, except... if you dig around online enough, you can find drafts of his screenplays for Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon that are (in my opinion, anyway) MUCH better than the finished films.
So he actually does understand his own ideas perfectly well, he knows how to express them clearly. But on set, he loses it, gets hung up on the wrong details, goes up his own ass, and forgets 50% of the stuff he meant to say to the audience.
I'm not sure if this is something to be praised or not. I did like both of those films, but thought they were both deeply flawed and unintentionally funny. When I found those scripts I was surprised by how thoroughly the earlier drafts fixed the problems I had with those films. And in that recent documentary, you can see how unhappy he is with the finished product of Only God Forgives.
The thing is, he clearly is on the semi-functional end of some sort of mental illness. I wonder if he doesn't just get a bit manic and overwhelmed under the pressure of running a film set, and literally just gets distracted from what he originally meant to say.
>>81234142
He didn't know who Elle was until his wife recommended her for the part because she saw her in Ginger & Rosa. He also cast Christina Hendricks and Alessandro Nivola, who played Elle's parents in that film.
>>81234369
So the whole thing was a front for Refn to kiss a random pretty girl?
>>81234058
Interestingly, Trier is also very "loose" when it comes to his shoots. Maybe it's a Danish thing.
>>81232756
That Refn films are garbage.
>>81234420
He wanted to feel what it was like to be a pretty 16 year old girl. Elle is his alter ego.
>>81234365
I admit I preferred the old script for Neon Demon
I haven't read the old draft for OGF, but having said that, I love the film
Do you mind if I ask what the notable changes made to OGF were?
How was the original script of neon demon different?
>>81232772
I want to whisper into her leaf ear about all the places I want to lick her then go for the neck
>>81234753
Abby Lee's "victory" was more of a consolation prize and her own delusion.
The other two died in more horrific ways
He liked Jena Malone's performance so much during filming he completely re-wrote the final act at the last minute.
Other things come out in the commentary like he had Skinny Pete in his movie and he didn't even know who he was known for.
The movie was a literal shoestring budget so he's doing all these things to save money. The commentary is a blast.
>>81234674
As I remember, the broad strokes of it were pretty much the same, it was just much more detailed. The characters were characters, rather than one-sided archetypes. The spiritual/symbolic overtones were still there, but subtler, and much more effective within the context of a real, complete narrative.
He cut out TONS of dialogue like he did for Drive, but the original dialogue was actually pretty good.
>>81235457
>shoestring budget
I mean just cause it's not superhero blockbuster tier, I still wouldn't call $6m "shoestring"
>>81235457
Elle's commentary is fascinating in a way only /tv/ could truly appreciate because the entire production and schedule revolved around the fact that she was underage while filming.
>>81232756
so Refn could kiss Elle without rape charges
>>81232756
It was a simple commentary on state of modeling industry, beauty standards and other such things,
That doesn't really matter though. What matter is the visuals. This movie is a definition of "form over substance"
Personally I loved it, because it is simply beautiful.

$6m is kickstarter money these days. Not major Hollywood theatrical release money.
>>81233258
that's the guy from dexter right? he looks a lot like Rorschach from watchmen
>>81232781
This made my laugh way too much and I'm not even sure why.
>>81236756
i think everyone laughed, don't know if it was Refn's intention though, i need to rewatch that part with the commentary track
Something edgy
>>81236828
I think it was definitely meant to be funny. He's well aware of the schlocky/trashy aspects of his films.
Want to know why this movie is the epitome of true kino, despite what 'professional critics' might say? Because literally every 'normie' dislikes it for one reason or another.
There's no exception to this by the way. If somebody dislikes Neon Demon you can be 100% positive that person is a pleb.

It wasn't. It's even in the old script that leaked
