A lot of it waas ahead of its time. Similar to Citizen Kane in how inovative it was for framing shots and areial photography. The Berlin Olympics filmed by Rifensthal also had some really avant garde techniques used

It literally opens with an airplane shot of Hitler's plane flying in.

When you watch a rally today it is shot in the style Leni used in this documentary. Nobody ever shows the cameras.

Leni wasn't a Nazi, she didn't even want to be there and tried to let an aid do the whole thing but Hitler asked her personally to do it and gave her 100% freedom. Nothing was staged for the movie, she just went to work with her crew and captured what happened.

Hitler even got mad there weren't more shots of the other nazi officials. Leni kept them out because some were ugly, boring, or fat.

If you think political rallies are boring why would you expect this movie to an exciting watch? However, it is emulated in almost every political rally you see on tv. You've just seen it so many times you don't realize the significance of this movie being the one that came up with how to shoot it correctly.

You can watch Triump of Faith, the film from the year earlier on how to do it wrong.

Also, Ebert expects this film to be 'propaganda' and thus to have some evil manipulate scheme behind it. Back then propaganda wans't the 1984 evil word it is now. Now we use the word marketing instead.

Not only was the camera work extremely good for its time. The use of symbolism and hidden/subtle implications of some of the scenes really succeed in the point the film is trying to make.

For example near the start. There is a scene with clouds, later on, out comes the Fuhrers plane. Without even over thinking it. Your brain connects 2 and 2 together and sets your view of Hitler as some sort of mystical and godly figure. Without words to tell you, you subliminally know how to feel about this man
