After watching all the Star Trek series except for TOS, I just finished season 1 of TOS, and I like it.

The episodes are a bit crude due to the age of the series, but it's surprisingly good.

The "sexism" is refreshing and entertaining actually.

The episodes where "we found a class M planet just like Earth except _____ happened differently in history" episodes are really jarring for me. I know it was to save money so they could produce episodes on existing lots, but it doesn't feel like it fits with the rest of Trek, especially since that concept was abandoned as soon as their budgets increased marginally in future seasons and movies.

Season 1 is the best one, 2 is great at the beginning but then it falls apart and 3 is the worst
>>
>>81204788
the only episode of season 3 I don't like is Spock's Brain
>>

Yeah, you still have to look past some of the show's limitations, but the structure is pure Star Trek that fans of TNG would recognize.

The last time I watched TOS episodes, was in the mid 90's as a small kid.

Yeah. I went through a Next Generation phase early in college. I thought it was super cool and deep. I have a hard time watching any Trek now though. I think going on to grad school and reading a bunch of Edward Said has poisoned my brain because I always just think "oh shit colonialism in space," and like the perfect is the enemy of the good and I'm complaining about a progressive TV show not being progressive enough.

It was super good when it was still new to me. It made me think about social issues and different ethical dilemmas, and it was fun to explore the concepts discussed. Also, aesthetically it is really cool.

It would have been cool to see original Trek as it was airing. I feel like the experience would be totally different without 50 years of history between now and then.

People keep complaining that the new Trek show will be too progressive and focused on identity politics. I wish they'd push that shit to the limit and show a point in the Trek universe that is just inconceivable for us right now. Completely break down social orders as we know it and just throw shit at the wall until the human society portrayed feels very alien to ourselves. I get this defeats the purpose of the show, which is to cast the crew members as slightly better avatars of our contemporary selves, but I think an attempt to actually envision what people will be like 500 years in the future with the ability to fucking fly at warp speed through space would be some real shit.

There was nothing wrong with colonialism and there is even less wrong with Star Trek's "colonialism"
>>
>>81205990
Yeah I'm not going to get all into that. I feel ambivalent about the topic at best. It's more just a pattern recognition thing where I see it, and regardless of how I feel about colonialism at large or about its fictional representation in something like Star Trek, when I see it my first response is to stop enjoying the show and start looking for different tropes of colonialism, and to be fair, there are quite a few Star Trek episodes with plots that boil down to "white man brings reason and civilization to the primitives" trope. As I said before, it's no really a big problem for Trek, especially given that the show has always been meant to be slightly left of the general public. It's more that I'd like a Star Trek where it's a lot harder to relate to the cast and understand the social and political problems being addressed.

It isn't even necessarily an issue of political alignment either. I'd just really like to see really dense political and social theory represented in a space opera where it's like Spivak and Zizek on acid, but I'd also be down for more right-wing theorists to be represented too, as long as their representation were also needlessly abstracted and complicated.

No... you push it to far and "progressive" and identity politics means looking over a person's talent to fit racial, sexual, etc. quotas...

The "progress" of Star Trek is to look at ability and ignore the identity politics as much as possible.

The point is to show that anyone can have great ability and don't hinder them based on race, sex, etc.

The point isn't to promote someone just to fill a quota and hope they perform well.

TOS was always a lot more memorable than TNG or DS9 to me. Never finished Voyager or Enterprise.

Something about the 60's aesthetic really works for me.

>>81205858
kek, next your going to be complaining about how Frantz Fanon poisoned your brain as well.
Lord Cromer has mine
>>

So if the Federation truly is an egalitarian meritocracy, do you expect the crews to be all cis-heterosexual humans plus 1-2 aliens? Considering how many species exist in the Federation, why do humans seem to get promoted over the other species? Worf is Picard's punching bag for almost no given reason.
>>

Is this b8?
>>
>>81208087
I like Fanon a lot actually. To be fair I like Said too, I just have a hard time enjoying things I used to like as much as I used to like them.
>>
>>81204250
OP, they NEED to make a new Trek that looks and feel like the original but with updated FX. Trippy, surreal and sexist!!!FACT!!!

>Something about the 60's aesthetic really works for me.

I know what you mean, it's why I also love the 60's Batman tv show and the Monkees feature film Head along with Casino Royale and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. The colors are soo vibrant and everything is fun!!!FACT!!!
