I was thinking about how successful anime adaptions of late have been (Ghost in the Shell, Death Note), and it got me wondering: what if Hollywood did an adaptation of the greatest anime of all time? I am, of course, talking about Legend of the Galactic Heroes. I already have a good idea for the main cast:
>Will Smith as Yang Wen-Li
>Michael Cera as Reinhard von Lohengramm
>Tyler James Williams as Julian Mintz
>Donald Glover as Sigfried Kircheis
>Crispin Glover as Paul von Oberstein
And a few things I think they should tweak in the adaptation since the original show is a bit dated:
>The Galactic Empire should be given a more 'Russian' flavour
>The Terraist Church should be changed to Christians
>Phezzan should be removed completely to avoid any unpleasant comparisons
>Rosenritter Regiment should be changed to something more ethnic, possibly based on Native American heritage
>Free Planets Alliance should be renamed Planetary Union
Anybody else have some thoughts on this project? I think it could be the thing that truly puts anime adaptations on the map.

The thing is that LOGH is (like most of the best science fiction anime) extremely derivative of old American SF novels... So why not just base the movies on the old novels instead... I'm sure many of them have entered the public domain, too, which would help
In addition, I think Yang should be the one to win the war. Reinhard being successful just doesn't make sense in todays world.

So true. It would be a huge let down to end it the way the original story did.

>extremely derivative of old American SF novels
>This is what Americans actually believe
It was an adaptation of an Asian novel that was extremely derivative of centuries old Asian literature and storytelling. The science fiction part of the story is the least important aspect, it is just a vehicle that is largely unimportant in the grand scheme of things; this is most obvious in the space battles which resemble old naval battles and employ more conventional strategy and tactics than anything technology related.
Ignoring the science fiction aspect, it was still largely influenced more by old Asian storytelling with a modern political twist that I guarantee you will not find in any American literature.

>Will Smith as anything

all your suggestions are terrible, i suppose you are trolling.
Even if made faithfully, this story is too big to adapt into a single movie or trilogy, it would be strawmanning the series.
I hope they never touch it.

Also, Yang should be a gay character, because, you know, it's the actual year and shit.
I don't really care, as long as it has good space battles

Wow, that would be fucking phenomenal. I was thinking that maybe Sigfried and Reinhard could have had a gay romance, but I didn't want to humanise Reinhard too much.

The anime already has gay undertones so why not
