We could have had true anime kino and probably Cameron's Magnus Opus if only he didn't go full retard and became a vegan tree fucking hippie.

I remember him talking about it 13+ years ago enthusiastically. How he wanted to make the film rated R and that Alita would have been fully CGI because he thought there is no actress out there that could ever pull her off, but that kind of technology was still years away. He literally made Dark Angel and Avatar as a finger exercise and puffer, so he would feel comfortable with that kind of film making process.
Then on one beautiful day he woke up and decided to become George Lucas 2.0 and gave away his decade long pet project which he worked on with Yukito Kishiro himself, had the script ready and concept design done to an absolute trash talentless C-movie beaner hack.
Just like that.
This is one of those rare things I really wish I could have seen in my life. It would have been something special, something iconic.

Akira would be a huge fiasco if not connected directly to the Japanese. Ghost in the Shell has "respect for the source material" at least in the sense that the people mking actually watched it and get at least in part why people liked it. But then comes all the Hollywood-isms that need to be in every big budget movie now a days and the whole product starts to suck balls 'cuz the parts don't mesh well.
