Movies? No. As a story telling medium it is only good for singular stories, but when you move on to movie franchises and sequels it's flaws become very apparent. TV isn't the future either because it isn't as profitable, so storytelling as an art form is fucked.

The only videogames that has ever ever dared to tackle mature themes and issues was the original Deus Ex. Games still have to come a long way before they can be compared to movies in terms of how they make the player think and what kind of emotions they make him feel.

Your thinking of examples where people act silly like jumping nonstop which take away from the gravitas of moments right? Game designers are aware of this which is why in Witcher 3 or the Last of Us they have cutscenes for all the important moments, it'll continue to get better over time.

Any emotions or thoughts a film can induce, a game can induce too. As evocative as a film may be, games have the potential to be moreso because instead of something happening to a character you're watching, its happening to a character you've been personally interacting with over the course of the game, the consequences of your choices and your own actions will always ring louder than the choices of a character on screen.

Mmmm, I think RPG's right now do have a lot of bullshit that's pointlessly there for the sake of gameplay that isn't even particularly fun like resource gathering, crafting and upgrading that take away from its artistic or story telling merits. I think this will get better as gamers stop obsessing over gameplay hours. Yet at the same time I also think RPG's have the greatest potential for storytelling in the coming decades once VR and more really start taking off. Custom character RPG's like Skyrim, Mass Effect and Dragon Age are really shit in terms of telling a conventional story because you're not seeing the story through the eyes of a well crafted protagonist because of the customization. You're character is necessarily bland and capable of being utterly irrational, at best these games are only good for fun or telling an anthology of separate stories within an interesting setting that you travel through.

Witcher 3's main story is much worse than the individual stories you encounter in side quests but its still does a better job with conventional storytelling because instead of making a character, you occupy one that behaves in character even when making choices.

What about games with emergent "stories" like Rain World, Creatures, Dwarf Fortress and others I can't think of right now. They focus entirely on gameplay, but they don't frame the player as the center of the world around which gameplay revolves. You get a system which works fine on its own and the player is a sort of wrench in the works that upsets the balance and all sorts of crazy shit happens.

Isn't this a more natural approach for single player games than trying to be movies with gameplay sprinkled in to fool the easily-fooled into being more immersed than they would in a movie?

Do I have to have played the first to play this one? Considering on getting it.

What are you saying? That drama isn't entertaining? That you can't have good drama in games? Many fans of games would disagree with you strongly there.

I think most of you're legitimate complaints are because we're still in the immature stage of video games. Games are games because of the hard focus on the gameplay part. Gotta have lots of people to kill, bosses to fight, things to buy or upgrade and a big map to explore. I think these types of games will always exist and they can't compare with cinema in storytelling, but I also think eventually there will be a new genre that's a mix of the two. The cinematic part of it will help to tone down the game-ier parts of the game medium. Yeah there are just so, so many challenges to doing it right that I have no answer for but am confident some clever people will get it right one day.

Well, contrary to /v/ "contrarian" belief L.A.Noir,GTA4(and maybe GTA:SA),TLOU,Heavy Rain,Beyond:2 souls,HL2(yup),some Telltale games, older WRPGS, FNV ,maybe Uncharted etc... are great games that surpass a lot of movies and are highly "cinematic".
I don't play PlayStation but they (sony and his inhouse devs)are on forefront of/ pushing cinematic games(probably long term investment for Sony).
I believe we will see interactive movies in near future, but there will always be non interactive movies(but they will have to be something extraordinary to compete with what's essentially per-person tailored movie)

Not OP, I felt that cult old school WRPGs(Arcanum,Planescape,Bg,Fallout2 etc) were almost perfect instrument of delivering interactive story (that and pointnclick Lucas arts adventures)=as early prototypes of what storytelling games will evolve into, way of inserting yourself into different reality.
But design of games went wrong way last ~15 years(shooting bullets thru cross hair on middle of screen as only mean of interaction with the world,shittiests part of it all ,fps has so much space and potential for evolving, yet they waste it on flying rifles) so idk
