How do you Defeat It? Or at least not get killed by It?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

So you're a 12-year-old kid and not only you do see It as Pennywise the Clown, nobody else does. You know you're not crazy or hallucinating. Several kids in your town have already mysteriously disappeared or turned up dead; all pointing to that freakish clown. What's worse is that the adults and authorities can't help you. Pennywise has control over them and can even turn them against you if it wants.

So how do you stay alive? Can It get you if you move away from the town? Because at first, that's what I would consider, but the novel implies that It might have killed Stan Uris even though he was in Georgia. So it's not like dealing with Freddy Krueger and you're safe outside of Springwood. So can Pennywise track you down if you moved to Castle Rock, another of Stephen King's fictional towns in Maine?

You could make damned well sure that you are NEVER alone. You're always in public whenever you can and surrounded by lots of people because It doesn't seem able to kill you in front of multiple witnesses. But there's always going to be a point where you WILL be alone. Even being with a few people say 4 or 5 doesn't guarantee It won't try to kill you. I'm talking at least 20 or more.

Also, does It kill passers-by? The book establishes that it's preyed on Derry residents for centuries, but say the 4 kids from The Body (Stand by Me) travel through Derry. A lot of Stephen King's books share the same universe. Does Pennywise kill them if it gets the chance or does it only seek out Derry kids?

Attempt to seduce It. Carry razor blades in my anus.
>>
I kill myself and have someone bury me in the pet semetery, than I resurrect I track down Cujo and Christine and procure them both.

In my new car with my new dog, I team up with the Sometimes they come back guys and form a ghoul crew.
My ghoul crew and I track down the mangler and use our ghoul powers to control the demon.

Now we are ready to face IT.

Furiously masturbate until your dick starts bleeding
>>
>>81158000
That's a pretty interesting scenario, but I doubt you'll have any trace of your old self. Remember that anyone resurrected from the Native American burial ground comes back as a twisted and depraved creature.

I do admit, the idea of being reanimated and having a ghoul dog and a possessed car against Pennywise is awesome as fuck.

Run a train on a prepubescent girl.
>>

>>
>>81158133
That was quite possibly the most retarded thing I ever read in middle school. I saw the 1990 mini-series one night and borrowed the book shortly after. Everything was good up until that point.

>>81158242
Well obviously any straight guy would. But there's other ways of calming down and finding their way in the sewers than running a train on the token girl in their group. Oh and did I forget there's a fucking monster that's lurking in there, but that's all okay because we're forging the bonds of adulthood in a gangbang.

According to the book, a magical turtle can defeat it.

So I'd keep the pocket turtle Jeb Bush gave me (pic related it's me)
>>
>>81158300
The question is, can Pennywise control your zombie self? Or does the outside force that reanimated you negate his powers?
>>
>>81158364

How to inspire enough fear to eat the kids in the middle of a friendship bang, though?
>>
>>81158133
Prepubescent children don't even think about sex like this. 100% a Stephen King Pedo fantasy.
>>
Well in the Dark Tower series a creature of the same species is killed with two shots to the head.
>>
>>81158528

Isn't it heavily implied that Beverly got the idea from her dad constantly talking about it? And it's obvious she strong-armed the boys into it, so...
>>
Doesn't IT always come back to life decades later?
>>
>>81158556
It was so unnecessary to the plot. Stephen just wanted to get his dick hard.
>>
>>81157852
I haven't watched the original in a long time but I remember thinking you could literally just avoid it, like not go in the sewer or going looking for him. If you see him like don't go towards him and go the opposite direction
>>
>>81158608

Personally, I felt the blood oath after they got out was perfectly fine to seal their bond. Didn't need the sex scene.
>>
I don't get the thinking of making the clown look scary/creepy from the get-go.

Isn't it supposed to lure kids in? Making it creepy right away turns people away.
>>

Because that's whats "in" for the time period, shitty remakes with "life-like" makeup or cgi and redesigning the villain. It's all about making it scarier and badder
>>
>>81158608
>It was so unnecessary to the plot.

Not only was it "unnecessary", it was just plain stupid, and completely out of place for the story.

King is a hack, and the fact that he's sold millions of books is a testament to how shitty the taste of American "horror" fans truly is...
>>
>>81158823
I completely agree. I got memed into reading a few of his books over at goodreads (never using that shit again). They were written like fanfiction. King is just a weirdo.
>>
>>81158716
She literally tells the first one he has to put his thing inside her. The fat kid ends up having a huge cock. The stuttering kid doesn't stutter when it's all said and done (he got sloppy sixths). All this to "bring the group together" and then they make their way out of the sewers and take a more conventional blood oath to come back if IT isn't dead.
>>
>>81157852

>>

>>81158910
Honestly the inconsistencies with the powers IT is supposed to have is just beyond irritating.

IT is supposed to eat the flesh of humans. Ok. Pretty plain and basic.

IT prefers to scare the victims because "it makes the flesh taste better". So perhaps it's SLIGHTLY an emotional vampire, in this instance feeding off fear, but it's main thing is eating the flesh or at least at most it's 50/50 flesh/fear.

After all if if was JUST an emotional vampire it would have ZERO reason to kill and this would in fact be detrimental to its cause. Why have to get a bunch of other kids scared of you when you already have one you could torment during the night to the point where it gives you all the fear you want? Then when it grows up you start on another kid.

Georgie's arm gets ripped off. It can teleport, shapeshift, cause illusions, etc.

Why not teleport right up to an individual member of the losers club and rip their arms off? IT gets in extreme proximity to all of them at different times.

There is zero reason IT couldn't have murdered all of them one by one.

I understand the "IT was just toying with them" explanation up to a point, just like he presumably did with other kids BEFORE MURDERING THEM.

Why bring Henry Bowers in to it at all? How can IT rip a humans arm off then all of a sudden not have any power to kill them? It's obvious it is not a mere corporeal monster it does have a physical aspect to it.
>>
>>81159207
They were being guided / protected by the turtle. It's rival.
>>
>>81157852

>>

>>
>>81159402
It's explicitly stated the turtle is dead when they're adults. IT tells them that and Bill sees that yes, it is indeed dead when he does the ritual.
>>
>>81159299
And missing one of their circle and worried if they can even stop it again let alone "forever".
Part of the turtles magic is still with them though and has helped each one of them become successful and rich in life as soon as they get away from Derry. Cept Mike cause he stayed in the poison town.
Even then they lose another member trying to fight It and presumably use up their last bit of turtle power.
>>
>>81159462
That's the shittiest fucking excuse for it not to be able to kill them but able to kill whoever else. Even still that only explains it for the book and it's dark tower tie in with them killing it "serving the beam" and the kids being the chosen champions of the beam's guardian.

Doesn't explain how he doesn't just start ripping them apart in the movie.

I read the book when I was pretty young (about 13) and I thought the sex train was weird and a little embarrassing but also powerful, for lack of a better word. Nothing I was reading or anyone I was talking to would have ever talked about something so sexual with young kids (around my age) like that, and it felt like it was important because they were so close from this experience in every other way, they also needed to have this final bond to show that they were, in a way, completely grown-up after this whole experience. The battle against It was something that nothing else in their lives was ever going to be stronger than, so sex had to be a part of it to make the coming-of-age complete. I dunno, that's how I remember feeling, like it was important that the kids weren't shielded from ANY experience and you couldn't even imagine anything else in their later lives being a stronger bond.

It can only be active for a limited time and is extremely arrogant.

There's also the implication that when he makes a physical appearance, most of his power comes from the fear or hatred of the people he's in front of. If he doesn't properly terrorize his victims and their able to draw on their belief/inner strength.

He only goes in for the kill personally when he's confident he's got their prime fear. Outside of that he tends to manipulate or drive people to kill each other/themselves.

>also bev runs through the streets while IT drives her dad insane and all the townspeople either dont notice or get up and go inside.
Well that could be chalked up to the townsfolk thinking that it's a kid running away from being disciplined from her dad. This was the 1950's and child abuse wasn't quite the hot topic button yet.

As for the Paul Bunyan statue incident, I chalked that up to Pennywise toying with Ritchie. It taunts him by saying that it could get him right now but it's having too much fun. It was mind-fucking with Ritchie, but trying to kill him outright was something it was bluffing. Pennywise casts partial amnesia and disconnect on adults, but something as blatant as open murder would be giving away too much.

In case It came back, duh. He spent a lot of time doing research and forming theories and connecting the dots about its patterns. I think there's more in the book about why he never left, but in the end it's a vague kind of mystical-fate "just ended up that way, because it had to" kind of thing.

There's 2 possibilities:

Like Freddy Krueger, the only way to defeat It is with IMAGINATION.
You must basically imagine a weakness for It and then believe hard enough till you convince yourself that said weakness is 100% legit.
That's why kids have an easier time against It, they can wholeheartedly believe that a silver bullet could seriously harm a shapeshifting eldritch abomination because of their innocence. Adults are too logical to believe in something like that.

>What's worse is that the adults and authorities can't help you. Pennywise has control over them and can even turn them against you if it wants.
You see this is probably the scariest thing of all in IT. All those child murders and disappearances aren't reported on state or national news because Pennywise doesn't allow them to. And that's pretty damned terrifying as a kid to realize the grown-ups can't and won't help you because the monster is pulling their strings.

In fact, living in Maine in the Stephen King universe is the epicenter of you're gonna see terrifying shit. Jerusalem's Lot is infested with vampires that slowly venture out to creep on humans in the surrounding towns. Besides Pennywise, there's all the shit that went down in Dreamcatcher and Insomnia. And Castle Rock had a demon set up shop besides a rabid dog attack.

In some ways, IT is easier to kill than Freddy. Using your dreams to fight against Freddy only stalls him so that you can escape. You can't really "kill" him in the dream world because that's his domain and he's at his strongest.

Against IT, you can plausibly believe that you're a Ghostbuster or one of the Winchester brothers and kill Pennywise.

>And it's all the girl, Beverly's, idea. She realizes that the group needs "bringing back together" and the only way to do that is to lose her virginity in a mass hump session.

>To be fair, it's actually portrayed with a lot of love, certainly in comparison to the parade of sexual atrocity that's preceded it on this list, but no matter how many references to affection, bird-watching, lazy days spent reading funny books, or poetry, it's still seven pages of a grade-school group sex session. You can't unless Stephen King writes you defeating Pennywise. Pennywise can cause amnesia in anyone. The only reason why the kids were spared and even able to hurt Pennywise, was because the god of the macroverse (Stephen King) wrote it that way.

standing up to it seems to work most of the time.
It came close to killing most of the losers club on several occasions but they didnt let the fear overwhelm them and fought back. It also likes to fuck with them, when it could have killed them but there are passages where IT is described as being afraid of them. It feeds of of fear metaphorically and literally. once a child is scared out of their mind they become delirious or confused and that when it kills them with the help of its deadlights that stun them I guess? IT also says fear salts the meat and makes them taste better

>>81157852

you know that pennywise the scary clown is just an apparitional manifestation of a cosmic spider from outer space, beyond the limits of our universe, who dwells among the deadlights.

pennywise is a lovecraftian eldar god, probably azathoth, the deadlights are age and memory loss and the horror beyond non-being, the source of evil itself as we know it, an arbitrary beingness monstrous beyond our ken.

the deadlights are a realm beyond the physical, euclidian bubble in which our universe rests. it's as if we're all flies, inside a giant bubble of spider webs, and we can only fly so long before we get exhausted, and inevitably caught in the net of this lovecraftian entity who waits beyond time for us. pennywise is just a shape in front of a shape in front of a shape in front of something shapeless.
>>
>>81162832
Not fearing It prevents him from growing stronger but you also need to come up with a way to kill him that you actually believe in.
Eddie Corcoran from the book kept insisting that It was fake as shit and got killed anyway, Victor and Belch didn't run away and tried to fight him but they still thought they were going against the Frankestein monster and thus should have known that they couldn't kill him in a fistfight.
On the other hand, the Losers Club thought silver would harm him because silver always harms supernatural beings so they forced It to incorporate that weakness into himself and get harmed.
Honestly, the best way to beat It is to lock him into a form that's easy to defeat, either because it's a shit form like the giant eye or because it has a clear weakness like making turn into a vampire in the middle of the day.
>>
>>81162993
You can't LOCK it into a form it can change at will it merely looks for the most frightening forms for you individually and chooses that.
>>
>>81162993

IT can never be killed, only driven out from a local area for an infinitesimally brief moment in the greater span of things. that might be a year or a century, but IT has waited 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years without growing impatient, it can wait a little longer to get you.
>>
>>81163088
>it can wait a little longer to get you.
What's worse is that if it can't get you, it CAN get your children or any other descendants. Time is on its side.

If you think about it, that's probably the reason why none of the Losers have kids despite being in their late 30's. They subconsciously realize that if they had children of their own, Pennywise might target them.
>>
>>81163081
Yes you can. When he faces the Losers Club in the Neibolt Street house he starts taking different shapes and then Riche shouts "It's a werewolf!" and suddenly everyone sees it as one, which allows them to hurt him with the silver bullet.
Arguably this only worked because there were many people at once facing It, but if your greatest fear has a weakness that you know of then you could use it to fight It and force him to fuck off.

>>81163221

>>
>>81163147

time is most definitely on IT's side. IT existed before time.

IT's only natural opponent is 'the turtle', who also existed before time, and is also infinitely patient. our universe rests on his back, so to speak.

we can reference these two as 'panphage pangenitor', the dual Pan, all-consumer, all-creator. existence is something like a digestive tract where the turtle makes and the spider eats.

in that sense, the turtle isn't really even our friend. it's just one side in a constant gnawing in which everything we know and do is just a brief gasp before being eaten.

but, The Turtle does in fact guard 'the beam', which i suppose is one of the structures that hold up the multiverse. there's nothing we can do except fight to keep it all together, even if we're doomed.

the scariest part was after Henry threatens to tell Patrick's secret about trapping small vulnerable animals in a refrigerator and leaving them to die by suffocation, Patrick leaves to dispose of the corpses but is attacked by It in the form of several winged leeches which makes large holes in his body. >That whole deal about growing apart from your friends and eventually forgetting about them and the best moments of your chilhood as you grow up and go on with your life was sad as shit.
It is a coming-of-age story with a monster. It's a lot like Stand by Me. In the book, the Loser still hang out after they defeat Pennywise, but eventually drift apart because they all move away with only Mike left. How many of us lost friends over the years by moving? I had a good buddy named Zack that left in 5th grade. I can't even remember his last name and would have to dig through my yearbooks.

I graduated HS 8 years ago and I've lost touch with most of my childhood buddies except for 2. That's what life is; friends move on and memories fade.
>>
>>81163797
I know but it's depressing anyway, specially in the last chapters when they all want to keep in touch with each other and remember the times they spent together but they know that that's impossible because the magic fuckery is already making them forget everything.
>>
>>81163881
Yeah, the amnesia is kinda fucked up because what about Eddie? His wife must be going nuts because her husband is missing. And the fact that they're gonna forget about him and their other dead buddy Stan is what makes it a pyrrhic victory. If you aren't remembered, it's as if you never existed. All that time they spent is wiped from the slate.

This day and age, it's easy as fuck to get in touch with people thanks to Facebook and other social networking. But back in 1985? Good fucking luck. So I get what you're saying about how haunting the last chapters are. Everything they've been through and they all forget one another.

There's a lot of things "unnecessary to the plot" that are included in books and movies. Stories aren't just plot machines meant to be wound up to get from point A to point B.

The whole sections about the history of Derry are "unnecessary to the plot", but they are vital to the novel. In fleshing out the setting, in describing It. And digging into the themes of the book.

The sex act was weird as fuck, but a big part of the novel is about the transition from childhood to adulthood. That's what the whole scene is about.

She spends most of the parts of the book where she is a child slowly learning about sexuality through different sources, one being his father who is so posessive that he thinks he is fucking every boy she even talks with (it's also implied he lusts for her).
All of this leads to the sex scene in the sewers where she realizes that's what they need to do in order to regain unity as a group at the price of losing their chilhood and turning into adults or something like that.

I still can't get over how tryhard scary they are making Pennywise. The few times Pennywise shows up in the book he's not scary because he's overly monstrous. He's just creepily surreal and that makes him ten times scarier. But it really depends on how they do the Georgie scene. Georgie shouldn't be scared and be more like"wtf that's weird" instead of "holyshit there's a killer clown in the sewer drain." Otherwise Georgie would just run.

They were brought together by an otherworldly force. It brings them together, and gives them power, though some of the power to fight It comes from them.

After It is stopped the first time, they lose that power. The force of the Beam or Ka or the Turtle goes to sleep too. Leaves them. Because whatever that shit was, it brought them together to stop the monster and they did that, albeit temporarily.

So they were lost. Disconnected from each other by the absence of the thing that manipulated them into being friends in the first place (there are points where they talk about feeling a click whenever they meet someone who is "one of them", versus always knowing that lisping asshole kid didn't belong)

Bev hit on sex as an idea. Something that would make them all closer as people. Its sort of a dual thing in that its meant to unify them, and its also a "coming of age" moment as they transition out of childhood.

Its weird, but it should be. This is not normal, but nothing these kids go through is normal.

So they have sex. Its something outside of all of the manipulation from whatever cosmic forces wanted them to come together to destroy It. And it gives them the unity needed to get out.

So there's your real answer.

IT has a superiority complex, it severely underestimates the losers even when they are kids. I guess IT's toying with them is akin to IT working up an appetite, perhaps it takes great pleasure in doing so. It also seems to me, that it can only truely be a fatal encounter if you truely fear IT. I havnt read the book for a long time, but from what i remember, the times when the losers are most confident and least scared is when IT is most weak, and almost unable to attack.

I also believe IT is in actuality, not as strong as some, including itself, believe it to be. If you can keep your deepest fears in check, and approach IT in a confident manner with a gun (or any object YOU believe will damage IT), then you have a good chance of beating him.

I think alot of IT's strengths and weaknesses are psychological. I might be basing this on nothing, but i think if you believe the weapon you hold will truely damage IT, then it most likely will.

Obviously the whole flaw in this concept is that keeping your fears in check will be alot harder to do in real life. If he took the form of an Alien, I would be terrififed. Ghosts and zombies dont bother me so much, but some Alien film i've seen scare the shit out of me. And that the worst thing about IT. Even stuff you cant remember you're scared of, IT will conjure up such an illusion, and bombard you with it in the most unsettling manner possible.

I am very interested to see the new film. I like the original alot, but IT is too amusing to me than scary. I think the new IT has the potential to be terrifying, and less slapstick (not that the cURRY DIDNT HAVE HIS SPOOKY MOMENTS).

I really need to read the book again as well. I love all the stuff to do with the turtle, and how IT has been around since the beginning of the universe. Great, grea,t fantastic imaginative stuff.

Eddie Corcoran got killed even though he believed It was nothing but a dude in a costume till the end.

I don't remember but was he actually terrified of It? He tried to run way but when It catched him the kept trying to find the zipper in the "costume" instead of shitting his pants.
>>
>>81165630
maybe he was terrified at the thought of it not being a man in a suit
>>
>>81165057
This is why certain people shouldn't have kids. Why the fuck would you abuse your own flesh-and-blood like that? They didn't ask to be born to be beaten up and verbally browbeated.
>>
>>81165571

I mean its weird as fuck.

But I read this book when I was 13 and it made sense to me then. Weird, but the characters were so real life.

>>81165709

Why would you beat and constantly harass your daughter and then try to sexually assault her?
>>
Does anyone wish they would have had sex when they were a child? I feel like I missed a developmental milestone.
>>
>>81165731
That might be because from the perspective of a kid sex is more of a mysterious thing than something to be ashamed of like adults.

Either way, even if it was just a guy in a suit or the actual Gill-Man, Eddie was scared to the bone when Pennywise appeared as his dead brother. The fact that something that looked like the Creature from the Black Lagoon was coming after him made Pennywise all the more stronger from the latent fear.
>>
>>81165419
So what if it dealt with a kid who loved reading Greek mythology and truly envisioned themselves as Diomedes of Argos or Theseus of Athens and treated Pennywise as part of his hero's journey to be a badass? No matter how fearsome Pennywise is or what form it takes, the kid idolizes Greek mythos so much that he truly believes that he's the hero of the story and his scout knife will decapitate the clown as a trophy of valor. Does Pennywise fall to this kid's blade or will he lose interest for easier prey?
>>
>>81166014

Pennywise becomes the Hydra. Good luck decapitating THAT, kid.
>>
>>81166045
Kid knows his shit and cuts off 8 heads and cauterizes the stumps while he tricks the remaining head to be buried under a boulder.
>>
>>81166099

I would like to see any kid pull that off, especially with just a scout knife. He can believe he's the hero all he wants, but he still has to kill the monster. Unlike Hercules, he's no demi god.

>violently slaughtered and dragged into the canal
>only evidence you were there is thrown in the river by some black kid who showed up on a whim

>>
>>81166145
Say this kid is autistic or something and is so wrapped up in their fantasy world that the more he realizes Pennywise is real, the more excited he is that he'll become a hero and save the day.

And not even demi-gods were the greatest heroes of Greek mythos. Diomedes of Argos was just a man, but Athena was totally head over heels for him and the Trojans feared him more than Achilles even.

And so long as the kid truly believe that his scout knife or home-made bow and arrow or air rifle or whatever has magical properties that can slay monsters, wouldn't it work?
>>
>>81158637
pennywise never had anything to do with "luring" anything in, It simply feeds on fear

>King is a hack, and the fact that he's sold millions of books is a testament to how shitty the taste of American "horror" fans truly is...

amen. thomas ligotti and laird barron barely make a living off their writing, and talentless shitters like king, dean koontz, and peter straub are living high on the hog.

there is no justice in this world.
>>
>>81166267

Not when the nature of the monster is a giant, head regenerating lizard beast. It would have to just sit there and let the kid kill it to fail.

I bet the highest amount of people would be at a total loss if IT showed up as a horrible ghost. If it's a zombie, an Alien or a psycho killer, you'll at least know that it's possible to destroy it somehow, even though you're very preoccupied with not shitting your pants mid-run. Ghosts don't play fair and will stay intangible until you let your guard down, which will happen eventually.
