Is better with the obvious factor of the production, while not totally amateur the production value of this movie is way below of "Hollywood Standards".

Also helps if you understand what happen in recent Japan with natural disasters.

Shin is Kino Movie
Godzilla is Blockbuster movie

American one was better.

The thing that always drags Godzilla movies down is the human shit. I really didn't give a damn about the soldier son and his wife in the American one. Shin Gozilla is worse in that regard. Almost 3/4 of the movie is people sitting around in conference rooms talking about what they're going to do. Its clear that was the intention, that too much red tape and bureaucracy causes damage and wasted time. But that "message" ruins the rest of the film. People already hate government morass, we don't need to be hit over the head with it when we're trying to enjoy a huge monster destroying shit and us fighting back. Its like trying to mix a documentary on big business with an action movie, it doesn't work.

The American one did enough to show the human experience and cost without muddling the monster battles too much. Shin Godzilla is just boring. If you've seen the webms floating around on /tv/ of godzilla in the movie, you've seen the only interesting parts.

>>

the height of murica godzilla is really inconsistent
>>
It suffers from all the issues every live-action japanese film has:

1.) Bad, emotionless acting (Japanese are autistic and can't convey emotion, which is fine and dandy for IRL but for film is required)

2.) Generalized autism. Everything is labeled like it's the room of some 14 year old /pol/ poster. Helicopters, floors of buildings, missiles, etc..

3.) laughably bad special effects

4.) Jumbled plot held together solely through exposition

The actual full-sized godzilla scenes are pretty kino, but much like 2014 American Godzilla it barely appears
>>
Just realized that 98 Godzilla is giant xenomorph.
How did they get away with it?
>>

Kind of a mixed bag, there is some spine tingling shit but it's strewn amongst a talking head extravaganza devoid of human characterization. Kayoko Patterson is straight out of a mecha anime.

The constant titles are a nightmare if you're watching it subbed.
>>
>>81144126

>Kayoko Patterson is straight out of a mecha anime.

She was the only character I remembered because she actually had a personality.

>The constant titles are a nightmare if you're watching it subbed.

Who in their right goddamn mind thought it was a good idea to identify every hallway, vehicle and random character in the film with a massive hardcoded subtitle?
>>
>>81144286
That would be Anno, something he dragged over from his anime days.

I'm quite sure the movie is self aware of their use though, not that it's a good excuse.

>>
The monster in shin looks stupid but it's a superior film to Godzilla 2014.
>>
>>81144644
It's really not. 2014 felt like a proper Godzilla movie. Shin felt like a political ad.
>>

>>
>>81143922

>>
>>81144875
I agree and disagree. The moments with Godzilla in 2014 were fantastic, we just got very few of those moments. Shin has more meat on its bones. If they would cut out the human story, 2014 would have been monsterkino.
>>
>>81144875
Nice bait
>>
>>81141470
American Godzilla has higher production value but everything about Shin is better otherwise. Especially the monster design, which updates Godzilla in unique ways such as the "evolution" process as well as the nature of his fire breath, whereas Godzilla '14 just made him look edgier and cooler. It's also structured much better and more in line with the original, focusing on a mass coordinated effort to stop the monster rather than giving a standard "hero trying to save his family" plotline.
>>
>>81144943
You mean 1962.

>>81144974
I agree that the human parts were the worse parts of both movies but 2014 had more meat. Shin had like one good scene with G.

I don't know if he had more screen time minute wise, but he did much less in that time. The only time when he did anything particularly G like was the scene where he filled the streets with gas then ignited it and came up with the laser counter measure.

Shin would have been a good movie if the cut most of the political shit and the scenes that we actually got were just the first half of the movie. The movie feels half done.

2014 would have been better if it focused on Cranston for the human parts the entire movie. I still think 2014 was better since G performed more meaningful actions, and it had hot kaiju on kaiju action which I generally prefer to G vs Military, Mecha Godzillas being the exception.

Shin was the first movie that successfully lived up to the reputation the original created and modernized it. The city destruction scene gave me chills and I feel like it evoked the same feelings the original did all those years ago.

The point of the movie was the Japanese taking the reins of their own decision making back from the UN.

Just watch it, it's good.

I like 2014 a little better, but Shin is way more rewatchable. The slow burn of the Hollywood human drama is excruciating after the first viewing. Satirical lampooning of japan's broken bureaucracy and disaster response with tons of Eva references makes for a good time, every time.

2014 had great production values, had potential, was ultimately pretty boring.

Shin had some dodgy CGI at points, but is very inventive, and has a lot of social commentary on Japanese society. Even if you ignore/can't see the latter, it's a fun action movie with a great score

>Considering the film’s pedigree, we probably should’ve expected this deeper level. Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno penned the script for this new version, and shared the director’s chair with fellow Evangelion veteran and special effects guru Shinji Higuchi. Interestingly, Evangelion also told a story about a bureaucracy fighting giant monsters, but there the leadership was sinister and wily, while in Resurgence they’re just inept and risk-averse. For example, early on in Resurgence the Prime Minister consults experts over the evolving situation, then cherry-picks the rosiest assessments -- the ones that don’t require him to act. You don’t have to be Japanese to understand that situation, but it has extra ring in a culture that dissuades lower-level employees from telling the boss things he doesn’t want to hear. In Godzilla Resurgence the villains aren’t monsters, but indecisive cabinet members who (often rightly) fear doing the wrong thing.
>>
Shin Godzilla put some of the horror back into Godzilla. The burning cityscape, while nothing next to some of the disasters shown in other films, actually inspired awe.
>>
>>81148287
>>81148106

It’s a criticism that sticks, given the real events surrounding the ongoing Fukushima crisis. When the 14-metre tsunami hit the plant -- which was close to the sea in order to draw water -- it crested the inadequate seawall, swamping the generators and shutting down the reactor’s coolant system. With the water unable to circulate, the super-hot fuel rods turned the coolant to steam and the steam to hydrogen, kicking off three explosions that blew open the plant and scattered radiation far beyond the 20-kilometer evacuation zone. Despite this, both the Prime Minister’s office and plant owner TEPCO specifically avoided the phrase “core meltdown” for two months, instead terming it “core damage.” When bureaucrats from the Prime Minister’s office discovered that radiation plumes had spread beyond the evacuation zone, they hid the data to save face and avoid the political cost of resettling massive amounts of people in the land-scarce Tokyo area. Everyone, from TEPCO employees -- 90% of whom ran from the complex -- to the Prime Minister Kan’s office were in total disarray. When Kan asked his key nuclear safety advisor what to do, he discovered the man had an economics degree and knew nothing about physics. Unbeknownst to the public, the government came close, very, very close, to evacuating Tokyo. This chaotic, cover-your-ass culture among older Japanese bureaucrats is what Resurgence plays off so well.

http://www.zam.com/article/977/godzilla-resurgence-is-actually-a-biting-political-satire

tl;dr Fukushima, government incompetence, mindless deference to authority, posturing and political manoeuvring instead of actually dealing with the problem

You're an idiot. The are underground, but they have surface entrances. That's how people get into them in the first place.

The 2014 movie was a nice love-letter, and a great monsters fighting movie.

The 2016 movie was a pitch perfect recreation of the 1955 original, updated for modern times.

The former was a pretty good Godzilla movie.

The latter is what Godzilla needs to do to be relevant in the 21st century.
>>
I liked the 2 minutes where it was like the first episode of Evangelion, with the tanks lined up by the riverbed and everyone getting wrecked

I also liked the design of baby godzilla, but the cgi was god awful, and the execution of the human scenes where they made everything seem really realistic

But the ending was so anticlimactic

the japanese godzilla was great, it focused more on the people organizing together to solve the problem of dealing with a giant monster.

it was considerably more interesting and better visually when godzilla pops off like in this scene:
>>81145562

at first i thought the creature design was terrible, but it grew on me quickly and in the end i enjoyed it's weird fish/monster/campy look over the "it's just a big dinosaur" shit the American movie pulled.

The CG was hit or miss overall, but the hits are so good you don't even notice them.

Like this scene you can tell the helis are CG but then so is every single building in the shot. That close up of a tank turning the turret is also a CG tank.
>>
>>81143929

This, Jesus Christ.

Did they just not have the money to afford Cranston or some shit?

The son should have died, Cranston should have been the main focus of the film. It would've been a much better film.
>>
>>81150147
I didn't miss it, I just didn't care. I was told to watch this film for the godzilla and I liked the godzilla parts, but there was too much other shit attached to it, like every other godzilla movie. Apparently there was a version that was 1 hour and 30 minutes that was first released and we had to wait for the 2 hour version. I don't know what that's about but maybe I should have watched the shorter version.
>>
>>81141470

I watched it the other night, the CG is shit and its 90% people talking in different meeting rooms with lovely floral armchairs.

Anyone that thinks its unironically 'amazing' is an idiot. It's fun at times, but nothing special.
>>
>>81150191
>I was told to watch this film for the godzilla

You've been told wrong. Frankly, seeing Japanese government in action (or inaction) is far more interesting than seeing cardboard cutouts characters go about saving their lives, their loved ones or whoever. If politics is too high brow for you, fine.
>>
I can excuse the bad effects that appear here and there.

15 million dollar budget to make a Goji movie that's mainly CGI effects? They did a great fucking job.

I also like that Anno once again kept to making the military intelligent. In an age where the military is a bunch of impotent cucks on screen, it is very refreshing to see them in action and get results. Especially against a literal giant monster.

Anno having the Americans use MOP's was absolutely inline with military doctrine and would have been what they used in this scenario. My only problem was how he got rid of the bombers, it was kind of an asspull. All the random beams just happen to hit the bombs? Really? Eh. Not to mention, the US only sends four B2's to take this thing on? And then once they're destroyed they don't send anymore?

Also, why did they send B2's? That didn't really didn't make much sense to me when B52's would have done just a good of a job and they could have used a shit load more. It isn't like Godzilla has radar guided missiles or anything.
>>
Shin Godzilla is kino

Legendary is a flick
>>
>>81150269
It's not even political dram. It's just an equivalent to a webcomic strawman. The in place government is only there to get shit on and make the younger politicians look better by comparison. But rather than show that once or twice before moving on, they just keep pulling that shit over and over.

You could cut out a huge chunk of that shit and have the same movie.
>>
>>81150269
HEh, you're acting like the political shit was well done or something. All of the politicians were cardboard archetypes. You had the dead as a doornail emotionless MC, the guy that spazzed out over every discovery, the strong woman cunt who had a man voice directly under the prime minister, the prime minister who was nearly a useless bumbling idiot and only did what his advisors told him to do. All of the characters were just as awful as the western movies and you're too delusional to see it. The only good thing about this movie was the directing.
>>
>>81150285
>It isn't like Godzilla has radar guided missiles
He has tho. They say he got a super sonar.
>>
>>81150285
>Not to mention, the US only sends four B2's to take this thing on?

Could be explained as that's all they had on hand.

>And then once they're destroyed they don't send anymore?

They probably don't want to waste more once they set their minds on nuking it
>>
All these complaints about the character drama. It's like people think there is only monster action in a Godzilla film. Just like any other film, it has to be judged overall. Not condemned for not flashing its titular character ever five minutes. Shin Godzilla is about Godzilla its entire duration. He kickstarts the plot and the film ends with him. Here he represents the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster that struck Japan several years ago. And the film is about Japan coming together and solving the crisis. The characters are fun and the actual film-making is inspired. Sure it loses momentum in the third act and the CGI can be hit & miss, though this isn't remotely a bad film and it's easily one the best Godzilla films.
>>
>>81150395
>The characters are fun and the actual film-making is inspired
Nice buzzwords. The characters were shit and "le film-making(literally wat)" was shit. kys weeb faggot
>>
>>81150395

Compare it to Legendary's Godzilla where the only compelling character dies 20 minutes into the movie. Not only was hiding Godzilla in smoke and shadows a fucking stupid move, but having Kick-Ass try and carry the movie when he has the acting range of a wet napkin.
>>
>>81150449
>hiding Godzilla in smoke and shadows

fucking hated this in the movie. EVERYONE knows what he looks like. He's on the god damn poster. Why are we 60 minutes into the movie and the only thing you've shown is his tail? This isn't Cloverfield
>>
>>81150329
>>81150333
It could've been done much, much worse with the politicians actively opposing the plan and doing something extra-ordinarily stupid and were it an American movie, they probably would. It shows the system and how it can't react to crisis and the characters are still pretty subtle and what's more, their decision making process makes sense given their beliefs and backgrounds.
>>
>>81150336

That wasn't found out till later on. As far as the Americans were aware, it was just a giant monster.

>>81150345

I doubt it. The Marine Corp and the Airforce use C-130's and B52's for everything. I find it harder to believe that the US would be willing to send 4 B2's at a single target at once, especially since they absolutely would have had C-130's and B52's on hand due to transport needs and force projection.

The US not just dropping MOPs en mass at Godzilla seems doubtful, especially after he powered down immediately after. They were proven to be effective. So I am a bit torn. On one hand I am glad he kept some level of believable military effectiveness, but on the other hand because he did that it calls into question why they didn't just keep doing it afterwards. He probably should have just made the MOPs ineffective, which would make the UN press the Nuke option since it conventional weapons would've been completely exhausted.

If a bomb that can penetrate 200 meters of concrete can't hurt the fucker? Time to go to Nukes.

>>81150449
This. Every potentially interesting character becomes a non-factor by the second act and ATJ is left to carry the film by himself. And he is a frustratingly dull character who actively drains the remnants of life out of the movie. He has no personality, we don't hear his thoughts, and he no one of any significance to interact with. But the film takes itself so seriously. And the teasing only makes matters worse. Ultimately the audience isn't rewarded for its patience, as the cutaways continue in the climatic fight and, because it's so dark, it's almost impossible to even see what's there.
>>

Because Godzilla and all of his surroundings were 100% CGI in that movie, and it's REALLY FUCKING HARD to keep the scale and believability of a monster that size consistant, so it was easier to fudge by implying scale and hiding the monster behind smoke and shadow, than to actually try to get the scale right and fail, like the 98 'Zilla movie.

It's a problem Shin doesn't really have, because when size matters, it's an actual dude in a suit on a real-life set, with stuff CGI'd in around him.

Kill yourself.

It's good.
Could be one of the best, if not the best. There are some cheesy characters, one in particular but she doesn't get much screen time anyway. It's actually comic relief really

I think they put her in knowing nobody would take her seriously. She speaks english and it's laughably atrocious

> Shin is very political

Yeah a good 85%-90% of the film is looking to show the plodding speed of Japan's gov and how everyone keeps passing the buck. Trying to show how any decision requires 10 different people being asked.

They also have a scene in the middle of the film that is just talking about the asian stock market. From the point of view of wanting to see a film that won awards in Asia it ok but there is not very much monster time in it.

if the viewer is the sort of person who watched and has no problem with sub titles it's fine, your average american looking for a blockbuster monster film will hate it. CGI wise I think it's fine being it's a Godzilla film, a little cheesy sort of look is expected.

Plus the main destruction scene was genuinely fantastically animated. They nailed the CG where it mattered.

>They nailed the CG where it mattere

Yeah all the monster part was great old school godzilla stuff. Way better then the BS legs in fog crap the USA Godzilla films try to do.

the problem is most will find having 20min talks about DNA and citizen relocation plans to be boring as hell.
