>Tarantino has said that he plans to retire from filmmaking when he is 60, in order to focus on writing novels and film literature. He is skeptical of the film industry going digital, saying, "If it actually gets to the place where you can't show 35 mm film in theatres anymore and everything is digital projection, I won't even make it to 60."[103] He has then stated that he has a plan, although "not etched in stone", to retire after making his tenth movie: "If I get to the 10th, do a good job and don't screw it up, well that sounds like a good way to end the old career."

Will /tv/ be sad when the auteur makes his final kino and leaves cinema forever?
>>
>>81140620
Not really. I like what he stands for and appreciate him fighting for film, but his films don't interest me at all.
>>
it really will be

sure his films are derivative and fedora, etc, etc
but at least he makes movies that are no reboots or capeshit. He makes the movies he wants to make and there's at least a shit ton of passion in every one of his movies.
I get why his movies can be indulgent and redundant but theyre not soulless products to print money like most of the bigger movies in the industry
>>
>>81140708
This.
>>
>>81140655
I'm looking forward to it. Quentin knows a lot about cinema, a whole fucking lot, but his later films haven't interested me all too much. That said, all his interviews are fantastic. I think I'll enjoy him much more in novel form.

>>
>>81140740
Tarantino doesn't actually know much. All of his film "knowledge" comes from schlock, and exploitation films. Nothing wrong with it I guess, because those are the kind of movies he makes, just with higher budgets.

What I fear most is that in every paragraph he's going to be doing an "homage" to some famous book, but unlike his movie addiction I doubt he's read all that much, so it's just going to deteriorate to him going through the library and randomly ripping off a scene from one book after the other.

By the time he's 60, digital will be able to simulate film so closely even autists won't be able to tell the difference (it's already close enough for normal people, but nobody tries because why simulate a shitty obsolete technology?) Filmfags are as bad as vinylfags.
>>
better than trying to keep going and end up making a shit movie. hateful eight was borderline shit so hopefully next is good
>>
tarantino respects his audience. he doesnt treat you like 12 year old, pander, or force feed the story to you like an idiot. he makes quality movies.
>>
>>81141281
You can't simulate film or vinyl. I don't personally care and think both are mostly a gimmick at this point, but there is a special distinct feeling when watching/listening to analog technology.
>>
Pulp Fiction is the only thing he's done that's even halfway decent and even then it's just a fad/gimmick movie at this point.

It's like cherry or vanilla versions of your favorite colas. Sure you might try it, and even have it more than one time. But at the end of the day it's still just a gimmick and you'll still be buying the regular version of your preferred cola.
>>
>>81141424
Digital audio already exceeds the capabilities of the human ear, so the only reason it hasn't been done perfectly yet is because recording actual vinyl is cheap enough to make it not worth the effort. A high quality digital recording of a vinyl record sounds identical to a vinyl record.

Look at what's being done with image style transfer deep learning. Shoot a whole lot of motion control scenes with film + digital to get the training data, never bother with film again.
>>
>>81140620
I honestly only liked 2 of his movies.pulp fiction and reservoir dogs. All his other flicks did nothing for me.
>>
>>81141575
I think when it comes to film, it's more of an investment as an art form and as a director. I'm pretty sure that's why Tarantino spergs about this. You can't just send a shitty scene down the production line and let a bunch of digital artists try and save it. It's why most people don't acknowledge digital photography as art
>>
>>81141424
I dunno about that vinyl man.

Really the only thing that's discernible are the dust/scratch pops and maybe some difference in bass/brightness, but that can be attributed to different hardware being used(speakers) and the EQ being set up different.

That's not to say you shouldn't listen to vinyl and only have digital recordings because it is nice to pop a record on now and then and it does invoke a more careful listen I think, and the reason for that is because you didn't just search the album on youtube and listen to it whilst browsing the current fat-kino thread.
>>
>>81141517
Cola sucks ass and so does your soda analogy. What the fuck are you even talking about? If anythingthe drink would be some cocktail mixed with 2 or more experimental sodas that may or may not taste bad.
>>
He needs to make his John Brown movie already. It would be a good movie about the greatest hero in American history and it would trigger /pol/ hardcore, double victory right there
>>
>>81141876

>>
>>81140620
I'm honestly surprised and dissapointed his films don't feature a lot of white girl/black guy action

I mean, Reservoir Dogs have nothing
Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown have one, but in both movies they don't even kiss a black guy. Am I remembering that right? Kinda weird.
Both Kill Bills also have nothing, If I remember correctly
also Death Proof, Inglorious, Django
Hateful Eight has a gay interracial scene, but, it's a gay scene.

I mean how did this happen? You let me down Quentin.
>>
>>81141517

>"fad/gimmick"

>>
>>81141876
>Search John Brown on Wikipedia to remember who he is
>Brown's actions prior to the Civil War as an abolitionist, and the tactics he chose, still make him a controversial figure today. He is sometimes memorialized as a heroic martyr and a visionary, and sometimes vilified as a madman and a terrorist.

If 70mm was standard then it wouldn't matter. But if you're going to special effort to use uncommon technology then it's crazy to waste its potential. It would be like shooting 12 Angry Men or some other talking-based film at 120fps.

>>81144478

he DID use the technology you muppets. just because you can shoot mountains and nature and stuff doesn't mean you have to fill your flick with masturbatory shots of snow covered mountain peaks.

that would be the equivalent of those instagram girls taking pics of their feet all day fucking long.

he used it to capture more of what was going on in the cabin than would have been possible with 35mm.
that means he utilized it and did it well.
>>
>>81144609
>he used it to capture more of what was going on in the cabin than would have been possible with 35mm.
>that means he utilized it and did it well.

Yeah he utilized it to film masturbatory shots of Sambo getting his dick sucked by a Cracker. It would have made no difference had it been filmed in 35 to capture "what was going on in the cabin", and it doesn't change his masturbatory justification for using 70mm.
>>
>>81144774
>It would have made no difference had it been filmed in 35 to capture "what was going on in the cabin"

sure it would. not as big of a frame which means less things in the frame, and the idea was to have a lot of the actors in frame at once which again, would not have been possible with 35.

the cock sucking part was relevant to the story.

Are you fucking baiting me? Well done, here's your (You), just in case you're not. The size of the film doesn't determine how much you can fit on it dip stick. It's the camera and lens that do this.
>>
>>81144862
The frame size has no relation to the film size. Literally the only point of 70mm is a sharper image, which is wasted on visually boring indoor scenes. Outdoor scenes are ideal for 70mm because you always have a shitload of detail outdoors.

Seeing as you can get LED lights with >95CRI now there's no excuse to shoot in low light. Even if you're doing something like Barry Lyndon, use simulated LED candles and CGI real flames over them. All optics relevant to filmmaking are linear so multiplying all light source brightnesses by the same value lets you use smaller or less sensitive film with no visual difference in lighting. (or higher framerate or more depth of field, which is a better use for the extra light)

Really a fantastic movie with interesting characters all around. It takes a lot of skill to have one set for 2 and a half hours an still be interesting and fast paced. And sure his films are deliberately derivative. But they are genius, the screenplay and directing. He's a master story teller, just because he makes low brow entertainment, doesn't make him NOT a genius at it.

He's as good as Scorsese with consistently epic brilliant filmmaking, it's just his will never be as appreciated from it being deliberately low brow.
