Merlin: STAND BACK! Be silent! Be still!... That's it... and look upon this moment. Savor it! Rejoice with great gladness! Great gladness! Remember it always, for you are joined by it. You are One, under the stars. Remember it well, then... this night, this great victory. So that in the years ahead, you can say, 'I was there that night, with Arthur, the King!' For it is the doom of men that they forget.

I usually file this one under 'flawed masterpiece'

There's a lot I like about the film, and I have some personal nostalgia for it, but there are a couple glaring flaws that prevent me from really calling it great.

There is some really weak acting in here, the sound design is fucking horrible and dated, and hazy blooming soft-focus is way overused.

Script almost works but ultimately has to cover way too much material in way too short of a time. The only reason it even comes close to working is because we're already familiar with the story.

Percival's bits are really great too.

Is that from memory? Imma try the knighting scene. I've wept to this scene:

>In the name of God, St. Michael and St. George, I give you the right to bear arms and the power to mete justice.
>That duty I will solemnly obey. As knight and king.
>Rise King Arthur. I swear allegiance to the courage in your veins, so strong it is, its source must be Uther Pendragon. I doubt you no more.

Prob not 100% but close.
>>
Fantasy kino in its best with original Conan the Barbarian and Sword and the Sorcerer.
>>
>>81138148

Not from memory. Have almost whole script in txt. Just took it from there because I like Merlin.
>>
>>81138151
>Conan the Barbarian
I an 100% with you there. I consider that and Excalibur the best of the S&S subgenre by a wide margin. But The Sword and the Sorcerer is a 5/10. Can't support you there.

It's beautiful, it's smart, it's perfectly scored.

Yes. Yes it is kino
>>
>>81137905
That weird haziness was unavoidable since it rained constantly during filming and left weird look over everything. But that just heightens the mystical and ethereal quality since it's like we're peeking back in time to the imaginary era where King Arthur really existed. That final meeting between him and Merlin gives me such a weird feeling I can't put my finger on just from the way that scene is set.

no. it's a fucking awful movie I was meme'd into watching by you guys.

There is no structure or plot. I found myself so fucking bored only 10 minutes in and believe me, I TRIED to watch this shit hoping it would get better because from all the pictures and grids I've seen, it looks fantastic. But no, it's terrible, the story isn't there, the acting is LAUGHABLE. I was literally laughing out loud during scenes. Cringe worthy. Shitty, bad. Don't waste your time. Just admire the beautiful post and grids and leave your mind in mystery about this movie. It's not worth a watch.
>>
I was really glad it didn't follow Malory and White's cuckery. It was good how it was Guinevere's betrayal that triggered the Grail hunt.

It helps to know that Excalibur wasn't going for either a faithful 1-1 retelling of the myth or something historic. The acting and setwork were intentionally done with a dream-like, mythic cast. That's why you've got the super stylized armor even though it makes no sense for the period. That armor is used, and many shots are the way they are, because it's mean to make you think of the archetype and the myth of Camelot and Arthur. Excalibur is the Arthurian myth through the lens of Jungian theory: archetypes, birth, death, rebirth.

When you keep that in mind while watching it, it adds another level of enjoyment to the film.

Merlin: Perhaps you lust for what you cannot have.
>>
>>81138567
You're right but Excalibur most if not all modern mainstream fantasy just heightens and forces ugliness but never the beauty or mysticism Excalibur did, the movie is of course super violent but Arthur's last talk with Guinevere at the end drives home the "dream of what could be", Arthur's dream of the better world that will come again one day. That's really just a big running thing with a great deal of Arthurian myth that modern fantasy just ignores in favor of tits and violence and shitting squatting in the grass and tax policy.

A few years ago there was a kickstarter project to make a documentary about the movie, involving all the surviving actors including Patrick Stewart and Liam Neeson etc. It was successfully funded and made but has NEVER been seen outside the backers. the essence of the arthurian myth includes arthur being cuckolded by lancelot

in The Once and Future King, T.H. White gives marvelous characterization to Lancelot and Arthur, and makes the reader sympathize with their reasoning for partaking in the charade of arthur's "marriage"

in fact there's a great scene where arthur talks to guinevere and lancelot and gives his tacit resignation to the fact that they love each other, and since he loves them both he accepts things the way they are
>>

Yeah but the big underlying theme is that the cuckholding was a sin of such magnitude it fucked up everything. To be honest there's a lot of things in the book (and probably most tragic epics) that somebody could look at and go "well I wouldn't have done it that way" but the great thing about it is that nobody in the book could have done any different. It's just who they were.

And Arthur and Guinevere hate themselves for doing such a shitty thing to somebody they both love so much.
Objectively, guinevere shouldn't have been a whore, and lancelot shouldn't fuck his king's/best friend's wife. But she and Lancelot loved each other so greatly that staying apart would have been unbearable for them.

Arthur was a hypocrite though. Everything happened the way it did because he himself didn't believe in his own ideals. He tried to right the birth of Mordred with Might, he didn't punish Pellinore for killing Lot, nor did he punish Gawain for killing Pellinore, he let the orkaneys walk away from killing Morgause and Lomark, he didn't behead Lancelot and Guinevere the moment he knew they were having an affair. He didn't respect his own law.

Everything was his fault.

Point Blank is awesome. Highly recommended.

I never saw Hell in the Pacific, but I'll pass along a cool story about it told to me from film critic and family friend Joe Morgenstern, who was told this by Boorman. We always talk movies and we both love Excalibur. Anyway:

>Toshiro Mifune was impossible to work with. They fought constantly. Mifune would be late, or not come out of his trailer. I want to say they came to blows even.
>The movie was so far behind schedule and over budget, some studio execs came to the set to fire and replace Boorman.
>Mifune, to Boorman's shock, told them if they fired Boorman, he'd quit too.

Joe tells it much better. But seriously, see Point Blank.
>>
>>81142090
He doesn't. Arthur is ~6th century and Eglamore is ~14th century.
>>
>>81142153
>Toshiro Mifune
Dude was awesome. I haven't seen Point Blank, but if its Mifune and Boorman it's now on my must watch list.
>>
>>81136910
I don't think I've seen a movie that wasn't weird artsy crap that utilises the medium of film and the concept of a narrative to convey a progression of tone as well as Excalibur has.

The props and sets in the opening act are all totally fantastical with strange proportions, while by the end things are a lot more grounded. That simple little touch is wonderful.

Plus John Boorman is like the only filmmaker from that era who's still making decent movies.

>>
>ARTHUR! . . . ARTHUR! . . .
>>
>>81142202
Also the acting in the first act is really hammy and over the top while by the end it's downright subdued.

It was a really ballsy move on Boorman's part and I think for the most part people did get it and it did pay off.
>>
>>81142200
But he's not... Oh well, you'll love it anyway.
>>
>>81142271
The opening and middle acts of the film are so brash, they contrast perfectly with subdued final act and the bittersweet finale.
>>
>>81142202
The film didn't have time to explain it, but Arthur pretty much inherits a lawless land and leaves it the most civilized society in the world. It was great how they captured it so well.
>>
>>81142231
Not really, but I am circumcised and I am cheap.
>>
>>81142271
I think it ultimately did pay off because of how engaging the movie is but I don't think it's fair to say most people "got it" considering how often it gets criticised for bad acting.

it's because the movie starts with these roid raging Pagan fucking shits waging wars over their dicks full of pride and rage (Arthur himself nearly goes down the same path but cheating against Lancelot humbles him) and goes on to be a peaceful realm. You can see this transition in the armor everyone wears as the movie goes on.

>>
>>81136910

I like the movie but one of the problems i have with it is that it just feels like they filmed a theatre production.

I know alot if the actors are from stage but it just doesn't directly translate to big budget movies, at least not when viewing them today

The acting in it is actually good but it's often overly dramatic which again gives it the theatre feel. Maybe this was intentional but it just stands out.
