If there's a movie that terrified me when I was kid, it was Cronenberg's The Fly when I was 8. So many fucked up scenes... But the ones that were scared the shit out of me were Borans' arm and leg being dissolved the moment Brundle finally fully becomes Brundlefly. Holy fuck, that body horror!

I think Hooper added the edge for scenes like the face ripping. The way the poltergeist and demons work is pretty funny if you think about it - from their perspective this is some sort of Home Alone.
The corpses are disturbed and won't head for the light. The Beast is in charge of herding them towards the light and is annoyed by their disturbance. The poltergeist helps the Beast, it's just that its methods are hilariously extreme - it knows what you're afraid of and turns that knob to 11. The dude with the face ripping had bad acne scars, so the poltergeist gives him that hallucination. Meanwhile the Beast figures out that if it could just hide that stupid kid the indians are attracted to, then maybe the indians would head back to the light.

I couldn't believe the length of this scene and the detail it was shot in. Very few quick cuts, the camera lingering on the agonizing transformation. And no CGI. Yep, this gave me a few sleepless nights.
