I was thinking the same. I guess not.
I know videogames aren't canon but in Jedi Outcast (I think) and in Jedi Academy, there's a sniper rifle used by bounty hunters that actually disintegrates the victim that gets shot (they sort of burn away into dust and get deleted).
As for the Star Wars movies, maybe it's just slang for burning someone?

Yeah good point, it's kind of dumb that the Force/God is so visibly true in this universe, that you'd have to be stupid to not believe in it. Ruins all the mystery. It would be okay if everything had faded to obscurity after the clone wars but even with the new canon, writers are boring enough to put jedis and the Force in every single story.
