When Barristan resigned, do you think he could've killed the rest of the Kingsguard?

I think he would've gotten through maybe 3 of them before the worthless hordes started stabbing everyone and him being one of them.
>>
>>81116733
The kingsguard? Yes. Clegane? Not sure
>>
>>81116733
In magical world where fighting skill is an immunity to damage, yes
Not the effect they would've gone for given the context though
>>
>>81116809
Clegane, really? The guy who got his shit pushed in by Oberwyn?

I think Barristan could go toe to toe with Dayne

>>81116814
>not suspending your mind
>>
>>81116542
This is unironically completely correct. Edmure is the only one that had absolutely no reason to deserve the shit that went down and is pretty much completely stuck in the middle here. The show portrayed him as a coward but he's honestly just a really based lord. He'll roll out and defend his people or let the small folk in the walls. It's not always smart, but he's a based bro.

At least he got to fuck Roslin Frey.
>>
>>81116849
No, the Clegane who hasn't had his shit pushed in by anyone. The one that Jaime Lannister (one of the greatest fighters of all time in his own right) said was clearly the better fighter of the Clegane brothers.
>>
>>81116849
Sandor Clegane aka The Hound. He was there when Selmy got fired
>>
>>81116939
>>81116947
You mean the Clegane that lost to a woman, the same woman Jaime beat up while cuffed?

Ok.
>>
>>81116861
He's an absolute idiot, a shit commander who grew up idolizing two other idiots like Cat and his father and was so frail he went as far as going full "notice me senpai" for his underaged nephew while completely undermining his campaign
He's still based and a bro but he's an idiot, that's part of the Radmure character charm

Why did Rhaegar name both his sons Aegon?

Where did this meme start? The meme that Barristan is supposed to be able to fight off a dozen men at once? That's impossible for anyone. Doesn't matter how skilled you are.
>>
Jaqen H'ghar, born in the free city of Lorath, was a Lorathi criminal who later emigrated to Braavos to become a Faceless Men. After getting the Braavos citizenship, he began the training in the House of Black and White.

Jaqen H'ghar is Lorathi-Braavosi former criminal turned Faceless Men.

But why was Jaqen a criminal?
Why did he emigrated to Braavos?
Why did he became a member of the Faceless Men?
Does Jaqen still have relatives? Other H'ghar brothers and sisters?
Does Jaqen H'ghar work-out? Hobbies?

I was about to say MAYBE Jaime on a good day, or the Hound in full plate could give him a good fight, but then i remembered both were made to job in this show. To be fair, it's hard to tell if Jaime was nerfed or they just buffed Eddard.

I guess there's always the fookin' legend. Barry is a knight, after all.

Eh. If it were anyone but the actual showrunners I might be intrigued, but I just don't trust them to not fuck it up. >Actually-it's been a while, how far have they wanked Bronn?
Bronn is an interesting case. The fight he's most famous for in the Eyrie is against an old knight who was easy to tire out. So based on that alone he's not the best.

However, he's also shown to be really into prep time; spending hours watching other knights train at the Red Keep while training in private so they can't get a read on him. While being perfectly honest with Tyrion, Bronn admits that with a bit of luck he might be able to kill the Mountain, so by his own assessment he is pretty good.

In short, the show has wanked him quite a bit, but that's less because Bronn is untalented and more because Bronn prefers to avoid fighting guys who aren't sixty years old.

I'm not sure if this line is in the books, but Brienne makes a good point about Jamie after they get captured, about how all her life she'd been hearing how amazing Jamie is, but she isn't impressed. Yeah she's just busting his balls, he was chained, but it's a valid point - that people like to overpraise a famous name.

For example, what the fuck has Barristan done that makes him the greatest living swordsman? Praise from Jamie Lannister. He has participated in various wars throughout the years, performed great at tourneys (unhorsing famous knights), was a member of Aerys' kingsguard (who people like to say was "legendary" even though Joffrey's kingsguard is almost just as good).

Barristan is mostly a "legendary" tourney knight. He does not have a massive kill list. Any of the top Ironborn would mop the floor with his gay ass.

In the books Brienne reflects on how she only beat Jaime because he was chained up after rotting in a dungeon for a year. She's under the impression that in his prime, he may well have actually have been GOAT.

Of course, take that with a grain of salt, since Brienne herself is only good, not great. Jaime could beat her, but so could some random faceless men outside the inn at the crossroads.

As for the Ironborn, we don't really know how any of them stack up. Theon was a proven fighter before getting flayed within an inch of his life, and Victarion slaps knights around with his retard strength, but we have no indication that the rest are particularly great.

Victarion is a badass reaver, he's been fighting all his life, or rather, since Balon took over from his father. We can assume Dagmer has also been doing actual fighting and killing all of his life.

We see Victarion BTFO anyone who dares fight him on the shields, and later learn that Harras Harlaw pretty much did the same thing, though we don't see it first hand. I admit Andrik is kind of a fallacy under this line of argument, because we only have Victarion's impression of him to go by. Regardless Andrik is a big guy, bigger than Victarion, so if it's "retard strength" that makes Victarion so formidable (it's not just that, it's a lifetime of actual fighting and killing) then Andrik has more.

>One of the greatest swordsman in history turned out to be a dual wielder.

Don't want to piss on your shit but that is literally true in real life as well. Miyamoto Musashi developed a dual wielding technique that he used when fighting multiple opponents.

And if you don't know who that was, well, the guy spend about 20 years traveling Japan and sought out the greatest masters of each region and fought duels with them. Conservative estimates sets his dueling record as 60 wins and 0 losses.

That's always such a problem when in the story a womans beauty is important.

>and aren't knights so they get looked down on anyway

And this is pretty much what I'm getting at with Barristan and company. The Ironborn are not knights, and do not participate in tourneys where you make yourself famous by unhorsing other "famous" and popular knights. So they are not going to be really known about throughout the Kingdoms. But as we see in Victarions chapters, there are several badasses in this current crop of Ironborn, who can slay multiple people at once. That's why I think people like Jamie and Barristan are overrated, compared to some of the other warriors we come across.
>>
>>81120234
>legal docs
Are you telling me that Ned, who kept the truth about the birth from everyone, including his own wife out of fear of what Robert would do, decided to file a fucking birth certificate naming him Aegon Targaryan and put it on record where any idiot in the citadel could read it? That's the most retarded thing I've ever heard.

It might not have been Ned, I guess. Maybe that's why there were only two kingsguard at the tower instead of three like in the books. One was sent away to register the birth.

Either way, Jon sure is lucky that no one at the Citadel noticed there was a birth registered for the child leader of the civil war and the girl the war was fought over. Seems like that would have been big important news, but I guess maesters have important things to worry about, like training ravens.

That's also like 40 years before the story starts. I concede that he must have been good. I do not accept his boasts about being able to kill Joffrey's kingsguard when he was dismissed, and I don't accept his "legendary" status in the timeframe of the novels.

I've no beef with based Miyamoto, guy was literally an IRL Bronn. He didn't just rely on sword skill, he'd show up late or early to his duels, fuck with people by bringing improvised weapons, ambush them before they ambushed him etc.

Dayne's scene just wasn't executed well imo, he was surrounded by faggots in plate with shields. Besides he's supposed to be famous for his longsword Dawn wasn't he? Just seems like they made up a new style for him and it didn't look good.

>he doesn't exactly throw his weight around with it
Well that's another thing that make's Bronn interesting. Bronn is like Littlefinger in that he doesn't have alot of faith in chivarly, and because of that people underestimate him. He then takes advantage of that by killing the right people at the right time.

In the book, Bronn has murdered his way into being the Lord of Stokeworth, a fiefdom close to Kings Landing. Worrying about Bronn's ascension is one of the few things that Ceresi is right about during her time as regent; Stokeworth is a proseperous fief, and due to its close proximity to the capital, it provides over half of the city's food. While Bronn doesn't want his name to ring out like the Hound's or the the Mountain, he's now a very rich and influential man, who also happens to be hiring swords to shore up his position.

Man, show Bronn's life sucks compared to book Bronn's. He was somehow talked into trecking through the wilderness of Bravos right into an international incident, and he was last seen singlehandedly managing a siege on the Blackfish.

Has he even been paid yet? What the fuck could Jaime promise him to do all that? Seems like D&D's just using a plot hole to give him more screentime, and also justify Jaime not fucking up all these misadventures he's getting into

Just because according to DND fanfiction it's apparently "OK" for Jonnigger to desert the Night's Watch, does not mean it is *actually* OK. Jon will not desert the Night's Watch in that fashion in the books, I can guarantee you that.

What we're doing here is highlighting just how hamfisted their fanfiction has become. Literally pulling plotlines off the westeros.org forums. No one is expecting a character in the show to abduct Jon and execute him for being a deserter.

>>
>>81121401
She is. It should have been clear for a while now D&D are writing her to win; the best I can see is Jon digging up a final hidden tribe of giant archers or something. The most I can say is all her forces might not acclimatise well to the northern climate, and with a red priest on her side she can probably asspull a way forward.

Anyway, Cersei has what's left of the Kingsguard, what she can draft from the Westerland militia now the High Sparrow's been roasted, a crippled brother who's already using up some of her forces to put down the Blackfish and absolutely no good will from any foreign power. Yeah, she's fucked without plot armor.

At this point her best asset is literally Qyburn. He recruited Varys' little birds, created Robert Strong and probably manages her stocks of wildfire too. I wouldn't be suprised if her domestic policy literally boils down to "Qyburn, you're smart so you handle it".

Stannis appointed his uncle, or great uncle or something as castellan/regent of Storms end when he went to the Wall.

The Kingsdoms are pretty equal, except there's a portion of Lannister forces in the Riverlands, the treasonous Tyrells by far have the most numbers, but they are about to be split dealing with the Ironborn, and probably some kind of intrigue going on with Aegon/Varys

Once Stannis wins the North, they should be kind of exhausted, but able to defend themselves quite well. The Manderlys have quite a rich city (by northern standards) and have been building a fleet. The North could definitely siege the Twins once the Boltons are destroyed.

That said, the issue is not that Ramsay is not a fucking white male, it's that Stannis is MORE of a fucking white male. Stannis stands for conservative values such as law and order, in opposition to the progressive Renly who D&D loved so much. >Where does that leave him, really?
If he doesn't end up killing the Manderlys, he could end up using them to sneak into Winterfell. The Karstark and Umber forces could also serve this purpose. No one in Winterfell will know that the Manderlys turned cloak, and no one would know that the Karstarks were outed and courced into fighting for Stannis. His situation would improve, and the casualties of battle would ease the supply situation in Winterfell.

>Dany doesn't have show-level plot armor but she's got dragons and solid backing
Dany is a moot point in the short to medium term. She's going to be in Vaes Dothrak for a little while, either as a captive or consolidating control of her new horde. Even when she's done with that, she would have to return to Mereen to pick up her infantry and officers, who will have suffered casualties in battle. Even then, it's very likely that one or both of the Dragon's in Meereen may be stolen by then, either by Quentin if he's alive, or by the Ironborn. Which would leave Dany with an army, but not a fleet, unless she somehow steals the Volantene fleet coming to fight her.

As for backing, Dany probably doesn't have as much support as she might hope for in the seven kingdoms. Aegon is poaching her support in Dorne and possibly the Reach, and he has a better claim over all unless he's actually a Blackfyre fucking shit. Plus Dany is a foreigner, with foreign support and a questionable reputation.

>Westerlands still have a standing army led by Cersei and Jaime (who aren't as antagonistic to each other)
Ceresi is still very much on trial, and Jaime is perfectly willing to let her die. Plus while the Lannisters are able to beat up isolated castles, they are stretched pretty thin and dependent on Frey forces.

Plus it's not like anyone is going to try to invade the North during the winter anyway.

>>81123432
That's, well, better than anything the show's come up with I'll admit. But how exactly COULD he, reasonably, "harness the power of ice"? It seems well established the Others either make you their frosty zombie bitch or kill you; the only people who might know are the Children who seem to want nothing to do with him.

And the Night's King is just a legend in the books, so giving the dick to a lady Other won't work.

>>81123593
>If he doesn't end up killing the Manderlys

If he doesn't end up killing them, and if he has enough leverage to make them kowtow at the end of the battle. As others have pointed out nobody really likes Stannis and being stuck up north surrounded by angry northerners does not bode well for someone who isn't the world's most charismatic diplomat

>Dany

She has no fleet, no-but hinging on it being "likely" her medieval weapons of mass destruction would be stolen isn't a good bet to take when Stannis himself is going to suffer casualties. All the casualties, in fact.

Granted she has much less ability to engage than I remembered but Stannis still has no realistic counter to grown dragons other than hoping said dragons die before growing up.

>Lannisters

Alright, so the chain of command is fucked up in Westeros. That's fair.

What I'm taking away from this is that nobody realistically has the leverage to do anything substantial to anyone, at the moment. I see your point in that Stannis seems to have the most unified company of fighting men north of Mereen, but he tends to do thing in a very direct way-and the logistics issues really don't favor the direct way.
>>
>>81123838
I believe that guy's theory is under the pretense that he sees the army of the dead, and is slain and risen up by them, in some way. BTW if "kingsblood" is important for the Red Priests because of its supposed power, whos to say that the Others also wouldn't like to have a King captured?

The main problem with that theory, is how Stannis would actually "side" with them. But as we see in the AGOT prologue chapter, they do have some kind of social aspect, and GRRM confirms they have a language and a culture of sorts. "they can do things with ice you cant imagine"

I guess it depends what you means by friend...

Think he definitely likes to hang out with tyrion and shit, and he likes the situation it puts them in and all, but Bronn's friendship doesn't come with undying loyalty.

Kinda like having a "friend with your boss" relationship in current era I guess. You can't really be in bad term with him (or he might not want to employ you anymore) but sometime you develop a bit of friendship on top of that.

Think that's what Bronn had with Tyrion. Not enough to die for him for no reason, but then again I probably wouldn't duel to death a 7'6 man wearing a tank for armor, for my friend...
>>
>>81124527
Pretty much what >>81124863 said. He is clearly fond of Tyrion; he did name his adopted son after him. That may have been just to piss of Ceresi, but in their final conversation, I recall Tyrion noting some sadness in Bronn's farewell (Tyrion is normally quite good at reading people who aren't women pretending to like him).

So yeah, friends, but not Anime-blood-brothers-fighting-giants-tier friends

As for psycopath, probably not, just a hardened soldier. George is usually pretty careful in his depiction of mental disorders, so a psychopath would have the traits actual associated with psychopathy, not some Hannibal Lector bullshit. Bronn is friendly in his own gruff way, and he seems to have grown fond of his wife aside from the material considerations.

>>
>>81117965
I'm the one who posted what you're replying to but you're correct. I was just more pointing out that if we're going by the show, I'm not sure Barristan could've taken all those guys. If we're going by the book, we're talking about the old man who went up against Hizdahr's absolute best bodyguards/pit fighters. Fought multiples and fucking rekt.

On the show though, I don't think it's as bad as I made it out to be while making that point. He did literally kill at least a dozen of those harpies before they overtook him. He definitely held his own against a TON of guys there.

I totally agree with you though. Barristan isn't some god who can fight off 30 people. He can fight multiple guys (a few) for sure, but is basically a 1v1 god. That's what he's known for. That harpy death shouldn't be some mark against him. It just shows the difference in the styles. A bunch of cowards in masks against an honorable knight. He isn't used to that kind of thing at all but is good enough to still stand strong.

I was just pissed they took Selmy out of the show. I was so excited when I first saw his name as a POV. I thought his role on the show was about to expand but they just tossed Tyrion in there. I'm sure the books will put Tyrion there eventually but we really lost out on some father/daughter type stuff with Dany. You know, actually build her character outside of smug face and dragons. Barristan shouldn't have been written out like that. He's great.
>>
>>81127706
Yeah, especially in the books. Brienne says it's absolutely all she can do to hold off a bound man who is completely withered and out of shape. That's how fucking good he is. He gets tired but thinking back on it she says that he basically would've cut her the fuck up had that not happened. She was sure she was going to die in service to Catelyn there. It's much more clear in the books that she's no match for him, even in his weakened state. His lack of cardio just gets the best of him. He was chained to a post for a year.

>>81127775
He wasn't though. He went the honorable route and ended the fight when his soldier stabbed Ned's leg. I thought it was pretty clear Jaime was toying with Ned or at the very least, extremely confident he was about to kill him. Ned was fighting with everything he had, Jaime was defending while sarcastically evaluating Ned's skill and making quips. The soldier who stabbed Ned saved his life.

>>
>>81128045
This is a decent point but it's more reputation. Other knights that are known for being great remark that he's one of the best ever.

The thing is, when we get to the story, I don't think he is. HE certainly thinks he is, but he's past his prime and just doesn't realize it. The young crop of great knights is on the way up and his skill is diminishing even before his capture.

At one point though, I think we hear it from enough credible people to know Jaime is one of the greatest fighters of all time. Even folks who hate him for the king slaying (like Barristan) will remark that his skill is undeniable.

We just get him at a super interesting point in his life. He still thinks he has it, and he does to some extent, but he isn't the best anymore. Most people, including him, aren't aware of that yet. Post capture, he definitely isn't. He starts to realize it though and that's a major part of his arc. Stepping into his leadership role and leaving that behind because that's a young man's game.
>>
>>81122360
Lady Mormont is adorable
>>
>>81127785
Honestly in universe I don't think there's any hard and fast rankings of "Best". There are just some people who have a reputation for being really talented and hard to beat.

>>81127775
I'm just going by the books. If we're going by the show all bets are off, it really runs on what makes for the most compelling scene (in the early seasons) or what will get the most reaction videos on YouTube (later seasons)

>>81127876
As much as I hate how they killed Barristan, I do actually have to give the show props for acknowledging that even badass swordsmen can get killed by large groups, something that they ignored previously.

Contrast the hound's "death" in the book versus the show. In the book he gets drunk and picks a fight with three guys, and ends up stabbed. In the show he kills like five dudes, eats his memechicken, says fuck the king and rides off. Then he dies in his boss battle with Brienne.
>>
>>81128175
She's also literally the tipping point for Jon to have a chance of winning, an impetus for Sansa to be Sansa and the leading cheerer at Jon's final meetup. If she wasn't, /tv/ would be screaming at her for being a stronk womyn.

But of course she is cute, so that is all okay
>>
>>81128139
That's my impression as well. He has a famous name, not only because he's from a premier house, but also because of his tourney wins.

In actual fact though, we don't see anything remarkable besides him being .. essentially .. above average. It's not surprising that he is technically skilled, he won his first tourney when he was 13, and has been doing sword play his whole life. So it's not unreasonable to assume that he is better than most, but this almost religious insistence that he is the "best" is ridiculous when we have real badasses to compare to like some of the Ironborn

>>81128281
>There are just some people who have a reputation for being really talented and hard to beat.

>>
>>81127842
I wonder if she even takes the throne in the books, with Aegon at Storm's End and Tommen still alive.
>>
>>81128281
I agree about his death being good. I thought that was cool they showed that even the best knight can be killed by a rabid mob. That was something I hated about The Hound's death too. There in the premiere for season 4 when he owned that whole tavern of guys, I stunned they had him survive that. Then when he met Brienne I couldn't believe they were pulling that shit.

I didn't have a problem with how Selmy died, just that he died. I love that character and I thought the actor was amazing at the role. I was looking forward to seeing him do the best of Barristan and they just completely gave all of that to Tyrion. That whole fish out of water trying to run Meereen is far more interesting than seeing Tyrion do season 2 arc again.

>>81128343
I completely agree. I think at one point he was probably the best of his era (or maybe even ever) at jousting. His sword skill is said to be incredible but this is based on reputation. Some of that is his skill, which I think is probably more than above average just based on what Barristan said, but some of it is also due to most people thinking he was the youngest King's Guard for any reason other than politics. To everyone, he's this unstoppable monster at 16 when in reality the Mad King was just keeping his bastard close to him/robbing Tywin of his heir.

By the time we join the story though, I think guys like The Hound would've wrecked him. I think Theon may have been right about his odds against him in the battle, too. Loras is a better swordsman. So he was great, but is certainly past his prime. He was never a Barristan Selmy or Arthur Dayne from the evidence we have.
>>
>>81128343
You're definitely right that family name plays a part, but we have enough evidence that it isn't the only explanation. The Cleganes weren't a notable family until they earned their reputations as God Tier fighters. Conversely, the Tyrell brothers aren't talked about the same way as Jaime or Barristan. Loras has a reputation as a great jouster for his age, but isn't a notable swordsman. Garland got a bit of fame at the Blackwater and trains against three knights at a time, but isn't known for being GOAT.

>>

>Garland got a bit of fame at the Blackwater and trains against three knights at a time, but isn't known for being GOAT.

Didn't know that. That means Garland is probably quite impressive. But we must keep in mind (and this goes for Jamie, and less so for Barristan - but still) that actual fighting and killing is worth far more than tourneys and training, when it comes to practical effectiveness. That's why I think some of the Ironborn would mop the floor with the "great" knights of westeros.
>>
>>81122345
>you fucking faggots would never turn down Aisling Franciosi
Never said I would. I'd give her two wild minutes she'd never forget. That said, there's a difference between "not turning her down" and starting a civil war over you autistic fuck.

Also, Sansa is mostly talked about in terms of the power that can be gotten from marrying her. A match that powerful, who isn't a withered prune, is still a virgin and passably attractive (which Sophie Turner is) would be a massive catch for anyone. Look at some paintings of beautiful European princesses some time. Loads of them are just plain, but so many powerful women are ugly, that plain stands out.
>>
>>81128693
You also have to factor in that people like Barristan, Jaime, and Dayne all benefit from being famous King's Guard. Barristan and Dayne have that white cloak and the great honor to go with it. People need their villains to be powerful too though so you have the evil, unstoppable Kingslayer to counter that.

Dagmer Cleftjaw was probably once just as bad as any of them, but he's only famous on the Iron Island and isn't some King's Guard known throughout the entire realm. Victarion is quite a bad motherfucker too.
>>
>>81128537

Good point. The songs and tales told to create this impression of greatness are devoid of the very real political aspects surrounding some of the characters. So while Arthur Dayne is going to just knight some schmuck, he also isnt going around knighting randoms who perform great feats
>>
>>81128781
>So while Arthur Dayne is going to just

>^not going to just
>>
>>81128693
I get why you write off tournies, but keep in mind that melees are basically real battles with slightly less lethal weapons.

It's still basically pointless to try to tier list anyway. Victarion would mulch Jaime on a boat, Jaime would kill him easily if they were both on horses, and Gregor could probably take either of them on foot. There's too many variables for anything beyond "this guy is particularly scary to fight."
>>
>>81128859
Well then, who is the scariest to fight? Psychologically, probably the mountain. But he's not in renaissance plate, and there are openings somewhere. Oberyn did basically defeat him afterall, and Oberyn is not some crazy Zhao Yun from Dyansty Warriors spearman. What he does have though is real experience in Essos
>>
>>81128537
Reverse Jaime and Loras. Jaime is the one with a reputation as an amazing duelist and a really good jouster, while Loras is a jousting prodigy, but not an overly renowned swordsman (his brother Garlan is notably better with swords).
>>
>>81128969
I think it's probably The Hound. He's scary looking, Jaime said he's as strong as his brother but faster and more technical, he's fucking huge. He's probably the toughest fight.

Hell, you gotta figure, his weakness and fear is fire yet when he had to go against a decent fighter with a flaming sword he just fought through it and fucking killed him.
