Which director would you choose for the inevitable american adaption?
I just noticed Orson Welles did an adaption of The Trial, how is it?

it's okay, not great
I don't know how well this would translate to film since the vast majority of the book is internal narration.

Kafka really knew how to draw the reader in. Take, for example, 'Die Verwandlung' - the reader is instantly left to wonder 'who is this guy Verwandlung? And why does somebody want him dead? I don't think any director is talented enough to draw someone in like that.

I vaguely remember him actually owning the rights to an adaption.

I liked it very much. It stays pretty true to the story, though the ending is a bit different. It has a strong sense of atmosphere and it's very effective at creating a constant feeling of paranoia. Perkins is great in the leading role. It has a nice, gothic look to it and you can see some its visual inspiration in movies like Eraserhead or Brazil.
I recommend it.

It's the best Kafka adaptation that will ever be
