Now that the dust has settled,

What went wrong?
>>
>>81092970
This shit deserves a lower score than Iron Fist, the bullshit they pulled with the source material is even worse than DB: Evolution.
>>
>>81093153

It cannot be that bad.
>>
casting
>>
>>81092970
They did a half assed adaptation of an origin story that was already done and they weren't Disney.
>>
>>81092970
Wrong? More like right. Its a win when anime adaptions get terrible reviews. I hope this will be one of the last attempts at live action.
>>
>>81093226

Well the Major didn't have an origin story until one of the recent Arise mangas.

Although that story was cool military shit, unlike this garbage.
>>
>>81093192
I expected worse actually.
>>
>>81093276
Something tells me that all this means is that the budgets for the next one will get slashed. There's still Cowboy bebop, Akira and Battle Angel Alita in the works.
>>
>>81092970
It'll drop another 5-10 percent after this weekend's over when the mainstream sees it.

>>81093276
Say what you want about the Japs, anime and manga should stay in their hands. Hollywood can't even adapt US comics very well (I'm looking at you WB!) so what makes them think they can handle another country's stuff?
>>
The dialogue, from what I heard
>>
>>81093491

The mainstream watches capeshit. I don't know what to expect.
>>
>>81093423
I doubt we'll see those green-lit after this gets trashed.
>>
>>81093423
Yes well if this would make normals hate the movies even more its even better.
>>
>>81093555

Capeshit gets bad reviews when it's poorly written like with the Snyderverse movies.
>>
>>81093491
I'd rather they stop turning animation into live action shit in general. That's not going to happen of course so long as Disney keeps making money by rehashing their old movies.
>>
>compelling central performance from Scarlett Johansson

/tv/ BLOWN THE FUCK OUT
>>
>>81093782
I thought /tv/ was expecting ScarJo to carry this turd into not getting completely shit on
>>
>>81092970
They still forcing those masculine badass girl roles to Scarjo.
>>
>>81093782

She ain't a bad actress, she is just wrong for this role in particular.
>>
>>81092970
Just the usual.
Studio hadn1t gave a crap because tought that the fans would anyway but tuned everything down so the "wider audience" can enjoy it too.
In the end it become a crap what neither side can enjoy at all.
>>
>>81094083
Why?
>>
>>81093782
She is not a bad actress, at least, not thet bad, but she doesn't fit for those action girl roles at all.
>>
>>81093153
I don't think an adaptation needs to follow the source material completely to be good, maybe this film is shit for other reasons.

The Major is supposed to look like a pretty mass-produced doll, not an old Jewess.
>>
>>81094406
Why? If it's all robot underneath then the surface wouldn't matter at all.

Isn't the robot shell made from some sex robot model or something in the anime?
>>
>>81094552
Her
>>
>>81093153
one thing i'll say is that part of the soundtrack sounds like this https://youtu.be/-gytw00FtvU?t=43 (42 second mark)
And Kenji Kawai's song is in there, in the credits, but the one used for the shelling sequence is actually quite good. It even has similar vocals.
the movie is bad for falling into the typical science fiction evil corp of robocop without the charm. But EVERYTHING ghost in the shell is there and it works. It fucking works. Sure its adapted as a blob from the original 1995 and Kuze's story from SAC 2nd gig. And its actually a really clever to start this as a franchise.

I'll personally compare it to DmC: Devil May Cry
Weebs will cry about it while others accept this existing as its own
Antje Traue would have been a better mayor

25-50% of the rotten reviews seriously talk about "whitewashing" and use that as a negative for the movie.

In the manga they explain that her shell is based on a civilian model that looks like a hot teenager. But it has modifications for military use.

But this is how she looks in the manga, she has broad shoulders that makes her look strong and powerful.
>>
>>81094786
The Major always had gave the impression of someone who can kick your ass and is able to handle that bunch of elite soldiers/spies who were served under her both in the manga and in the anime adaptations.
Scarjo in the trailers looked like a scared little girl who has no idea where the fuck she is.

>>81096604
Pretty much spot on, they were so scared of even debating Trans-humanism in the film they tried to cram in like 3-4 other story arcs that went nowhere

One thing that's confusing a lot of people is that its an adaptation of Stand Alone Complex with visuals and scenes taken out of the 1995 movie. So yeah of course the story is different, SAC is a much better continuity anyways. Though I wish they went with the Laughing Man instead of Kuze. I don't like how they changed it so where Motoko and Kuze where forced to be cyborgs, in the anime it's something they chose.

It's pg-13 so that is literally impossible. Let'sbreak down the best parts of gits movie

Like AKIRA and Ninja Scroll, GitS got a following just from how it looked. I know there's a backlash growing against it as well, but the Patlabor films are structured much better, and Patlabor 2 is the best thing Oshii's done, aside from maybe Beautiful Dreamer.
>>
>>81093153
Why are people suddenly pretending like GitS is so amazing? I love the '95 film as well as SAC, but they're flawed. And they're on the better end of the series' material. All the movie has to do is just capture some of the tone and aesthetic that originally grabbed everyone's attention.

Applies to '95 movie.

Also, hasn't there been a shitload of anime adaptations anyway? Like before anime became a big thing?
>>
Wish we got Steven Spielberg's version instead, I don't know why he passed the project on to Sanders.
>>
>>81107051
I can't think of many high budget live action remakes of anime. There are cheaper Japanese adaptations, but this and Dragon Ball are the only ones that come to mind. Edge of Tomorrow also, though that's not technically from an anime.

why would you remake GitS if your going to turn it into a generic action flick

any westerner that knows what the hell it is it is going to be alienated and your average pleb has no clue what it is and would probably be turned off if they found out it was one of those preverted japanese mangos

is the ironic weeb market really that big because i have no clue who else this movie is for

Cos GitS sucks anyway?
>>
>>81107520
It's a stretch to call something bottom of the barrel when it's a subject which has barely been touched.
Bottom of the barrel would be when they adapt spiderman vs. the wall.

It lost at least 15 points for "whitewashing" so maybe it's actually decent?

I'm confused why anyone would want to watch this movie at all. If you want to watch Ghost in the Shell go watch the original Ghost in the Shell. If you want to watch something inspired by Ghost in the Shell go watch the Matrix. Both exist and you should have access to each already.

I love how the same people who were excited about it being 71 percent earlier this morning are the same people backpeddling now that it's rotten. RT really shows how people only like something if others like it.

Imagine being the Puppet Master in that scene and having to be all like "damn, Motoko Kusanagi, you fuckin' fine, all sexy with your flabby body and horrific androgynous monster face. I would totally merge my consciousness with you, both my ghost and the real me." when all he really wants to do is hack another loli sexbot in the red light district. Like seriously imagine having to be the Puppet Master and not only sit in that chair while Kusanagi flaunts her disgusting body in front of you, the favorable lighting barely concealing her stretchmarks and doughy skin, and just sit there, take after take, hour after hour, while she perfected that stance. Not only having to tolerate her monstrous fucking visage but her haughty attitude as everyone on set tells her she's STILL GOT IT and DAMN, KUSANAGI LOOKS LIKE *THAT*?? because they're not the ones who have to sit there and watch her mannish fucking gremlin face contort into types of grimaces you didn't even know existed before that day. You've been hacking nothing but a healthy diet of foreign diplomats and politicians and later Section 9 staff for your ENTIRE CAREER coming straight out of the boonies in Section 6. You've never even seen anything this fucking disgusting before, and now you swear you can taste the sweat that's breaking out on her dimpled stomach as she sucks it in to writhe it suggestively at you, smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to get paid to sit there and merge with her "Rubenesque (for that is what she calls herself)" beauty, the beauty she worked so hard for with personal trainers in the previous months. And then the Minister of Foreign Affairs calls for another hacking, and you know you could kill every single person in this room before the cyberpolice could shut you down, but you sit there and endure, because you're the fucking Puppet Master. You're not going to lose your future ghost over this. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.

Just came back from the film. It was shit, they didn't even include the best fucking scene in the original. Pic related.
>>
They even fucked up the garbagemen. It was an instant jump and bam, they were hacked, suddenly had guns and rammed the car, unlike how they were in the original.
>>
>>81112281
I was really disappointed by that. They tried to capture it in a couple very small shots but nothing worthwhile. It's like everyone involved didn't notice how the setting was also a character in the original -- one that not only sets the tone for the entire film but has such a palpable presence that it's not hard to see how it's affected the characters. In this, it felt like generic futuristic city with holograms on every building for no reason other than to look futuristic and """new""".
>>
>>81112344
I understand that it would cost more money because more CGI and shit, and it might be boring to the normie audience, but they should have at least had a nod to it like 1 minute minimum with that music, that music being the music for the credits was a disgrace.

This. The Scarjo one has way more rewatchability than the 1995 movie
>>
>50%

Now just gotta hope they don't make any money.
>>
Seems like they changed the plot.

Anime GITS was about a cyborg's philosophical questions concerning what it is to be human and her eventual conscience integration with a machine

ScarJo GITS is about the government wiping her memory so she could become an ultimate weapon, which was NEVER the case in the original GITS. She, like other cyborgs, were suspicious of their memories, but it was never verified that her memories were actually fictitious.

I don't even particularily like anime aside from GITS. But they always do the same shit to good stories; they dumb it down for the masses, make it about bam bam ur ded, and in the end only have a few scenes to compare the two to.
>>
>>81101146
>All the movie has to do is just capture some of the tone and aesthetic that originally grabbed everyone's attention.

From what I gather that's what it failed at desu
>>
>>81093557
Ultimately the reviews don't matter. If it makes a profit, then studio execs will continue to exploit the trend. If people want to kill these shoddy reboots, remakes and adaptations then they should stop going to see them
