If you turn off your brain one too many times, it won't turn back on. It's not like they're incomprehensible for people that aren't geniuses or anything. They're just movies, mate. Also, when some symbolism or stuff goes over your head you can also save your questions for the next "asian cinema general" thread on /tv/ and ask them.
>>81093961
Fallen Angels is like Chungking Express, actually, one of the stories was supposed to be fit into it originally. The story with Takeshi Kaneshiro in Fallen Angels is absolutely amazing.

kek people that only like The Hole are absolute plebs, thanks for confirming this. Weird how the only film of his that became critically acclaimed in the west along with Stray Dogs is the one you think is good right? God forbid you break out from the echo chamber and form your own more accurate opinion. It's an incredible film for sure but you have to be retarded if you don't think Rebels, Vive L'amor, I don't want to sleep alone and Goodbye Dragon Inn aren't better than Chunking Express and In The Mood For Love.

They all have their good points. Pic related.
If you want something different than the usual crime drama/thrillers.
Tries a bit too hard to be epic though, and the final battle never "ends". It keeps building momentum and you think THIS the final "moment", but then it happens again and again until you're just waiting for it to be over.
>>81094323
You're so up your own asshole, you could probably smell your farts days before you pass them. Rebels is nice but far from amazing and trying to imply Goodbye Dragon Inn is on the level of the WKW movies you mentioned is pretentious as fuck. And wrong. It's funny, you start off by getting mad because Tsai isn't as popular as WKW and then sperg out about how popular=bad.
>>81094500
What's your top 10 movies, anon?
>>81094500
I wasn't mad he wasn't as popular I was confused as to why he wasn't when he's clearly superior. It's kinda like how your mum apparently loves you more than your pet cat when the cat is clearly more intelligent and better looking than you. To bring popularity into the argument when it wasn't part of it in the first place just shows that you aren't at all one who should hold an opinion on anything that requires an IQ higher than the number of fingers you have.
Learn to read, learn to think critically, learn to think outside the box and above all learn to appreciate true cinema then come back to this thread so I can tell you to watch more Tsai movies after you've washed the soy sauce imbued cum out of your mouth that WKW deposits in your mouth every night.

They're the most accessible arthouse asian films that don't require you to know much about the medium or about asia to understand. Incidentially that's also why people have a boner for them but they're still pretty decent films.
>>81094814

Oldboy
Memories of Murder
New World..
And keep going until your brain explodes. Also, pic related. Fucking MASTERPIECE

Most of his movies have some hints of humor in them, but I agree that he never knew how to direct a good action scene. It got really annoying in Outrage Beyond where 70% of the scenes in the movie is a group of people walk into the set and shoot everyone with no resistance.

Not the plebs you're replying to. Anyone deluding themselves that WKW is on Tsai's level is a pleb. Kar Wai is all about visuals and atmosphere, which Tsai had down from his first film, Kaw Wai never was able to break past the surface.
Don't get me wrong, I like both, but Kar Wai is about watching a tropey, beautifully shot and composed story you can enjoy, Tsai is an investment that requires another level of attention.
Also Goodbye Dragon Inn is Tsai's only weak film for me. Repeats and recasts his iconic scenes but offers little else. I imagine those that enjoy it didn't watch Tsai chronologically. The River is his best, the culmination of everything coming together and working perfectly.

No joke, the only way to watch Tsai is chronologically. He uses the same actors and weaves a life out for them that grow through each film. You can literally see his style grow as his actors do. He's also self-referential, you'll see a point where he plays with expectations he's established in multiple other films, tons of small things like that.
I'm doing my third rewatch of him [spoilers]with my gf this time[/spoilers] and still catching new nuances.
(In that same note I'd say WKW too, being that 2046 is the endcap of his love trilogy, you're missing a lot not having some of that extra context, but he's not that hard of a director to enjoy without)

>Chinese above Korean
Really? I have a chinese friend who told me that the acting in chinese movies she's seen is always bad, I've never seen a chinese movie before so I wouldn't know
recently watched the yellow sea. man i loved that one. i feel like the damage the characters took was unrealistic though. motherfucker got stabbed how many fucking times and still tore his way through like 20 dudes solo at the end, kinda bullshit he then loses to one paper pusher.
>>81105742
All I remember from that is the great sequence with the lights in the stairway
>>81105529
>chronologically
Just the feature films? (pretty sure I've seen 'the hole') Or everything, segments, shorts.. the lot?
anyone know if lee chang dongs novels have been translated?

I get my korean gangster films confused sometimes. Is this the one with the giant parking garage knife fight?
>>81106017
Yup.. >>81091172
>>81099637
Phenomenal action scenes.
>>81105742
first hour/hour and a half were amazing, but I dropped the movie at Benny Hill style chase, where main hero runs away from like 25-30 people for 15 minutes
nope, not eating that shit director's trying to feed me

WKW is brought up a lot obviously by people discovering his movies for the first time, but he really is probably the most important figure in film for the 21st century, aside from David Lynch.
He focuses on the mundanity and ennui of modern-life, and I think the role which the digital age has on us, though this is never explicitly mentioned in his movies. But its the same thing, really; especially with 2046, his characters are people lost in history, the relationships they quickly form and desire to cling to, in a world thats overrun by the contempt of others and which they defy in tiny acts of beauty. This is why Chung King Express is so fun and light-hearted, but is spun around an emotional center much heavier and realer than most other movies which try to get that melancholy reaction from the audience.
He's really a master at what he does, and will probably go down as one of film's greats.
>>81104942
>Kaw Wai never was able to break past the surface
Such a retarded "analysis"
anyone have a link to chungking express with english subs? dont mind if its a stream or torrent
>>81095885
This movie is absolutely great. One of the most comfiest experiences I've had watching a movie.
>>81106246
I got to about 20 confusing minutes into 2046 before I even realised what I was watching. After that it blew me away. I knew by halfway through I was watching poetry. The smoky cafe's, the face shots, the soundtrack, the lighting..
It didn't occur to me to search for his other works. Duh. I'm making up for it now though senpai.
>>81090505
This movie is fantastic.
>>81106610
I wish I could be 5% as suave as that cunt. He's so fucking cool I'd probably let him fuck me and I'm not even gay.
>>81096198

Watch vengeance is mine for some older japanese kino.
>>81106737
Was just about to post that.
I rarely see it mentioned although I'm sure many have seen it since the first time I saw it was years ago when IFC would play Korean movies at midnight on Sundays.
Just watched the Man from Nowhere.
Pretty damn good, first time I ever teared up at a movie
>>81107256
Good on ya, bro.
Some great films in this thread.
>>81107256
>Pretty damn good, first time I ever teared up at a movie
I always see people say this shit, it makes me wonder if you're all kids just learning to emote properly after puberty, or you never watch movies that invite you to cry
>>81107371
I always sound like mr Internet tough guy saying this but I have just pretty much never cried in general, and never at any kind of media (video games books movies etc)
>>81107679
I was like that at one point.
Then I watched a Japanese film that manipulated me so badly it pretty much forced me to cry. It actually felt a bit invasive how well the movie was made with that exact intention in mind.
>>81094445
>more thrilling that master and commander
Master and Commander was comfy though it wasn't meant to be thrilling what the fuck reviewer
I'd also recommend Departures (Japanese)
This has been a decent guide so far.
Dirty Carnival was pretty comfy even thoughthese Korean Crime flicks always seem to have some kind of JUST ending you can see coming most of the time
>>81099358
>>81103951
That knife fight scenefelt pretty suss in the fact that Space Brothers looking motherfucker somehow took on all the slant eyes despite them all getting the drop on him with fucking kitchen knives

Finally got around to watching this, holy fuck it was good.
Up there with Oldboy and Na hong-jin's work
>>81104060
Old Japan > Chinese (up til late 90s) > Modern Korea > Chinese today > Modern Japan
Can't really speak for old Korean films, but there was a period of boom for China with Zhang Yimou and such that I rate higher than modern Korean, especially because they went through hell with censors.
>>81104831
This movie was hot
Koreans are good at making some depressing shit that i enjoy.
-Poetry
-Breathless
-Empire of lust
-peppermint candy
>>81091672
Also John Woo. The Killer and A better tomorrow are 10/10 actionkinos.
this was cool
This is one my favorites, I think I've never seen it posted and I always come to these threads
>>81095758
This movie wrecked me. Became a fan of the Tsai Ming-Liang immediately.
Leave asian kinography to me
>>81107812
What is it, goyim?
Legit haven't seen a film that gets you in the emotions. Wanna see if it can do the job.
There will always be a place in my heart for Memories of Murder.
>>81089856
I watched this immediately after I broke up with my ex-girlfriend over her having an emotional affair. It's a testament to the quality of the film that I was completely immersed in it to the point that I didn't break down at all.
The color and production design are absolutely amazing, but the soundtrack deserves its due as well - especially the central leitmotif. It's impressive how artfully economical the entire film is; I feel like I can count the locations and tracks on one hand, but it feels so full.
I'm surprised by the number of people not knowing WKW's work, though.
why no love for this amazing piece of film?????
>You will never have time to watch The Human Condition
Seijun Suzuki is worth watching for sure. His films are getting attention again because he passed away this February.
I've only seen Branded to Kill, which is typically known as his seminal cult film, but reading about his methodology it's difficult to not want to go out and watch everything he's done.
He repeatedly said he considered film to be A.) work B.) both boring and fun and C.) a limited medium so he did absolutely insane things in order to entertain himself and make making B movies for the studios he worked under interesting. Personally, I think his work is very alluring because it's inherently more appealing to a Western sensibility. With more formal filmmakers like Ozu and Kurosawa, some of what they're working with is lost in translation or doesn't resonate as strongly.
I don't understand why Tokyo Story is so revered
I mean, I definitely enjoyed it, but it felt like yet another meditation on the balance between giri and ninjo in modernizing Japan.
>>81093916
Nothing compares to Samurai X Trust & Betrayal.
Literally best animated movie ever made.
>>81096573
Can't recommend Harakiri enough. It's a very long and dramatic build-up for a cosmically satisfying payoff.
>>81092212
Pleb and contrarian opinion. Mr vengeance is just edgy
>>81099180
Good movie overall, although, it was longer than it should have been.

>Tokyo Sonata
I've never understood the shilling for this movie.
>>81099045
Probably because it's one of Kim Ki-Duk's earliest movies that pales in comparison to his later work. You don't also seem many people talk about the Isle or Bad Guy.
>>81104831
Have you seen the original black and white one? Really interesting cultural contrast between the two, due to the economic and political change that Korea had gone through in the interim.
>>81112257
You should (not) rebuild
>>81113687
>noise kino
I have seen anons recommending it to anons that have seen Tetsuo and liked/enjoyed it, are they similar?
>>81113502
But Oldboy isn't? Mr. Vengeance is visceral, dark humor filled trainwreck in slow-motion tragedy, which is why it's superior of the three.
>not a single mention of Attack the Gas Station
>>81108254
>the show must go on
>only slightly above average
Fuck me. I guess my taste is only slightly above average because i absolutely loved that movie.
>>81114137
korean comedy kino tbqh
>>81092212
this is a correct opinion
>>81113955
electric dragon is by the guy who made burst city which was one of the proto-jap cyberpunk movies way before tetsuo.
so theyre not too similar but they both come from the same place

i saw aoyama's debut helpless one random summer night, it was solid, really dug it's summer atmosphere, long takes, lack of three act structure, and the characters suffering from boredom. also thought the nirvana shirt was pretty aesthetic.
how good is eureka?
>>81100359
there are a couple of movies about the Gwangju Uprising but I think they're not very good.
Is Pulgasari kino?
