Just finished marathoning this kino with my significant other. Why was Bruce Wilbis in the film in the end? Surely an actor as iconic as him deserved more screentime? Odd choice really.

His personality only split to further protect him from himself. Dennis was dangerous to himself when under specific stimuli so another personality was made and then another until he reached 24. He's practically invincible to trauma (except by saying his name) by the time of the movie.
