Okay so i'm not really a fan of modern day horror movies, I really loved the genre when it would build suspense and tension without the incredibly loud music. Half the time I'm more scared of the inevitable loud bang that appears when something scary (or those fake scares) happens. I guarantee this movie is going to do the same thing.

>opening scene
>kid is alone doing something
>he goes to investigate
>eerie music plays at an increased 150%
>silence
>his mom enters the room with a huge bang

That's not even scary, it's frightful but there's no horror element in cheap tricks. Gonna have to give this a pass.

I don't hate it or anything, I'm just relly unimpressed. Many horror clichés originated from this book and King's books in general, (or at least the books made them popular) and judging by the trailer, the movie will just adapt the book at straight value. Creepy kids, Clown and objects working on their own etc.. have already been done to death. What's even the point ?

Beside grabbing the money guaranteed by an "IT" adaptation.

I recently tried to read Lovecraft again for the four time since I heard about him online, when popularity surrounding Cthulhu emerged.

Lovecraft's work, to me, is best enjoyed by researching wikis, watching YouTube videos, and reading ABOUT the lore, rather than reading the stories themselves. That sounds super plebby - and it certainly is - but I always found Lovecraft to be hard to read and a slog to get through.

Stephen King isn't nearly as deep, interesting, or detailed, but I think he's a better storyteller. It's kind of like the Tolkien/Lewis duality between LotR and Narnia; Tolkien is a master world builder and lorecrafter, but his storytelling is mediocre sometimes. Lewis is mediocre at world-building, often borrowing from other mythologies and ideas, but his stories are compelling and interesting.

Not related to "It" but kind of is.

My favorite Stephen King story is "The Body" and Stand By Me is in my top three movies of all time, despite the book and film being SO different.

His writing can be hard to get into for people with certain habits. It is rewarding if you stick with it; although i am pedantic when it comes to words and language.

Kings writing is more irritating in comparison and rereading a King novel isnt as rewarding as rereading a Lovecraft story.

Yes. It's changed slightly. In the movie a stressed out Bev calls Mike a 'dumb black' and realizes she's been infected by her fathers racism/IT's influence. To make amends she apologizes and leads Mike behind some sewer pipes. Scene skips forwards about 15 minutes when a very satisfied looking Bev comes back around with Mike and they lead the way to safety with their hands clasped.

Simple, but effective.

You sound more literary than myself; my background is in screenwriting (specifically television) and that's a completely different skillset than prose writing. I guess I find (most of) King's writing more "cinematic" (though I don't like using that word) than Lovecraft.

I like how elegant of a change that is, it combines two moments in the book and takes out some of King's weirdness. Them having to reaffirm their commitment to making sure IT is really dead in order to reform the Ka-Tet is a very convincing change.

King has like three stories that he tells over and over again with the characters jumbled around. Even those three share the same themes, "small towns and children are evil", "pop culture and cities are good". At this point he's like that one friend who won't shut up about his traumatic childhood.

The Dead Zone is excellent, though the non-Johnny bits can kinda drag on.

On Writing is also good if you have any interest in the writing process, plus it has some amusing autobiographical bits thrown in for context.

Revival is his best work in like fifteen years, sort of a Diet Lovecraft plot told through a young kid's downward spiral into junkie-dom.

And even if you have no interest, I'd at least give The Gunslinger a shot. It's short in case you really end up not liking it.

>Fukunaga: I was trying to make an unconventional horror film. It didn’t fit into the algorithm of what they knew they could spend and make money back on based on not offending their standard genre audience. Our budget was perfectly fine. We were always hovering at the $32 million mark, which was their budget. It was the creative that we were really battling. It was two movies. They didn’t care about that. In the first movie, what I was trying to do was an elevated horror film with actual characters. They didn’t want any characters. They wanted archetypes and scares. I wrote the script. They wanted me to make a much more inoffensive, conventional script. But I don’t think you can do proper Stephen King and make it inoffensive.

>The main difference was making Pennywise more than just the clown. After 30 years of villains that could read the emotional minds of characters and scare them, trying to find really sadistic and intelligent ways he scares children, and also the children had real lives prior to being scared. And all that character work takes time. It’s a slow build, but it’s worth it, especially by the second film. But definitely even in the first film, it pays off.
>>
>>81053761
>Are you going to see it anyway?

>It was being rejected. Every little thing was being rejected and asked for changes. Our conversations weren’t dramatic. It was just quietly acrimonious. We didn’t want to make the same movie. We’d already spent millions on pre-production. I certainly did not want to make a movie where I was being micro-managed all the way through production, so I couldn’t be free to actually make something good for them. I never desire to screw something up. I desire to make something as good as possible.

>We invested years and so much anecdotal storytelling in it. Chase and I both put our childhood in that story. So our biggest fear was they were going to take our script and bastardize it. So I’m actually thankful that they are going to rewrite the script. I wouldn’t want them to stealing our childhood memories and using that. I mean, I’m not sure if the fans would have liked what I would had done. I was honoring King’s spirit of it, but I needed to update it. King saw an earlier draft and liked it.

This movie builds it up hardcore around the clown aspect. I think it'll fool moviegoers pretty easily, but they'll hate it by the end when they realize it isn't a clown horror film but something a lot weirder and much more incoherently written.
>>
Looks actually acceptable, unlike the original one which was absolutely hilarious in its attempt at being scary like BALLOONS COMING OUT OF THE FRIDGE OoOoOo.

fucking jumpscare nonsense

Why are Americans so terrible at making popular horror films?

>the 90s movie is fucking garbage besides the scenes with the clown

why are greasy-faced teenagers so butthurt that they're growing up in the worst era of film-making since the 1960s? It's not our fault you're all a bunch of limp wristed, effeminate spergs
>>
>>81050230
>? It's literally a shot for shot remake with the most iconic scenes
I don't remember that water part in the end in the original.

>loving a shitty made-for-tv movie of the 90s is a sign of masculinity, maturity, and good taste
Yeah maaaaaan! Goosebumps is a cornerstone of American horror!

Is this only going to be the kid half of the book?

Whats the 80s equivalent to the shuck and jive? Pop and Lock?
>>
>>81049754
Yeah, pretty much. That cheesy jumpscare sound effect when Pennywise showed up in the sewer was fucking embarrassing and totally bastardized the part in the original book. I really hope it was added by the trailer editors and not the film editors. And the part where he ran towards the screen at the end was hiiiiiiiilarious

I am convinced that the only reason the original IT miniseries made people think it was scary was because of coulrophobics.

Hell Tim Curry himself is an extreme coulrophobic and he ordered no mirrors in the set to avoid seeing himself in the makeup, he almost had a staff member fired after said person brought a mirror near him.

Hope they use more scenes from the book which the first movie didnt have.
Can already see they are including the incineration chapter where all the people got caught in that building and burnt to death. Really interested to see what else they include.

Above all though, im curious as to how its going to end. IT's true form should be properly terrifying, (moreso than that thing from the first movie...)
Im curious as well to how they will implement the ritual of chud, the turtle, and all that bigger than the universe stuff at the end of the book.

i somehow doubt they will have the sex scene at the end in, but that'd be really brave of them if they did.

I like how you specify marvel capeshit and not capeshit in general.
>>
>>81051898
But the difference is that the original is a tremendous crock of overrated shit due to nostalgia.
>>
>>81054727
yes i think it probably will be a cgi fest.
but cmon, that thing at the end of the first movie was utter crap. i love the tim curry film, but it's biggest failing imo is the lackluster creature IT reveals itself to be.

i loled at that last part

Krampus had the worst puppet effects of any film I've seen
>>
>>81053032
>sell a unsettling and horrifying
You mean hilarious and over the top? He's a great actor but by no means scary as Pennywise, it's just 4 year olds and coulrophobics back then who made the film so notorious.
>>
>>81055027
your mom had the worst puppet effect reality has seen
>>
>>81053712
>the implication of it alone is scary.
what implication? a clown coming out of a drain and doing...nothing?

It's completely pointless and isn't even in the book.
>>
Will they show the town getting destroyed once Pennywise is dead?
>>
>>81054434
You don't get that you're bragging about being a bigger coward?

Forget about the child gangband, I want the scene where Patrick chokes his baby brother while having a boner.
Audiences will surely love that one.
>>
>>81055180
Imagine if they put the puppy scene in there, people would lose their shit
>>
>>81053538
Would strongly recommend The Stand if you like King, far and away his best book.
>>
>>81055108
Maybe, but that wouldn't happen until the second movie anyway.
>>
>>81055337
They should include the one with Henry killing Mike's dog if they really want peopleto hate him.
>>
>>81055180
>>81055337

Patrick legit disturbed me more than the clown, because that shit was plausible and had nothing to do with some supernatural boogeyman.

Hell, if anything It does the reader and favor and kills the fucker before he grows up and goes full Ed Gein.

Nah man not drudging through Lovecraft's slog of a writing is not "pleb" or anything. I like certain ideas of his but found them infinitely more palatable in comic book form, illustrated by Alberto Breccia, which captured all the horror from the mythos without the endless, racist ramblings of a terrified, neurotic man to detract from it.
