I get the feeling that this movie will be a good adaptation

Of course its going to be nothing but "TIM CURRY WAS BETTER HURR HURR" everywhere

I hope they fixed the script. The one I read Pennywise wasn't a banter machine (he is in the book not just the Tim Curry version) and they ripped off the bath tub scene of Kubrick's The Shining.

Clowm horror still works and frightens kids, just look at the creepy clown thing that happened in 2016.

Am I the only one who likes Pennywise's design in this? The old one was just a standard clown, this new one at least shows It has a history. I hope the actor is able to pull off a friendly facade and isn't 100% drider monster man all the time.

>he doesn't know that pennywise appears as clowns that are contempary

Eh, King is inconsistent. Pennywise never "updates" his clown form at all in the book. The Clown always looks the same no matter the decade. So whilst King says that Pennywise would look comparable to Clarabell or Ronald McDonald, King wrote Pennywise as the Clown all the way back as early as 1929 when the townfolk shot the Bradley Gang and saw each other as Clowns (in the 3rd Interlude.) Clowns did not look like Clarabell and Ronald in the 1920's.

Read the book. Pennywise is NEVER approachable in the book. IT is always everything you ever were afraid of, from drowned kids, to mummy men, to leper's, to Clowns with razors for teeth and bleeding from the mouth. Aside from the Georgie scene, IT was always 100% trying to be scary. There was now happy fun approachable Pennywise. Only nightmare fuel. Always nightmare fuel.

>>81015820
Nah, going with that outdated costume doesn't make sense, as people simply don't associate that look with a clown anymore. So instead of seeing him and thinking "...scary clown", people see him and think "....makeup wearing faggot in a frilly suit", which doesn't have the same emotional impact. Clowns are supposed to be safe, so you let your guard down, but you know you shouldn't trust some makeup wearing faggot in a frilly suit.

Should have kept the costume modern and recognizable.
>>
>>81016580
>So instead of seeing him and thinking "...scary clown", people see him and think "....makeup wearing faggot in a frilly suit",
No, that's not true at all. They'd still think "clown". Nice try though. And it's only with Georgie that he wants anyone's guard to be down. The rest of the time he looks evil and is fucking with your mind :)
>>
>>81016212
>I agree, atleast watch it first
>The film is in desperate need of a remake if people would actually watch it now they would see how dated it is...

Fuck off. The movie is fine. It's the same as every King movie. Overly long with alot of character depth and pointlessness.

It's still a good movie on par with The Shining. But that doesn't need a remake does it? Oh wait it does because it is just as bad and has alot of the same trappings and failings as IT did due to the problem with the media.

IT being pretty much a distinct movie from the novel is what made it good. The novel was alright but the movie was sold entirely by Tim Curry being the best creepy clown ever.
>>
>>81016687

You're "some faggot" who is part of the internet whine machine. The design is good. Pennywise doesn't need to look like a contempary clown. He can look like a 19th century acrobat. It's different, but it's still a clown.

It's just overly long as the other anon said.

A film that relies mostly on costume and practical effects doesn't date half as quickly. The costume and Curry is iconic, the only real issue is, as you've said, the pacing and there's plenty of classic films that suffer pacing and length issues.

Curry's take on the character will go down in history i do agree. I just think that a new take on the story is not something I'm against. There's plenty of stuff from the book that got left out and that they're adapting now. Also, a cinematic take, with a bigger budget may be a good thing. They're also doing it in two parts as well so the more they adapt from the book the better. We'll see; I'm often sort of optimistic when it comes to horror movies and that's on me, because i usually end up disappointed.

>wanting a direct adaption of a Stephen King novel

Brb floating a new version of The Shining since that missed out half the book as well.

PS Tim Curry made IT better than the novel had any right being. There's always too much shit in King's books to make into a reasonable lengthed and well paced series.

Pennywise being directly responsible for mindfucking the kids while portraying himself as a clown works better than what they will do in the new movie.

This movie will be another Dreamcatchers/Kujo/Langoliers/TommyKnockers/insertanyKingseriesthatsnotdirectlyTheShiningorIT.

It'll be shit. IT was it's own series that was loosely based on the source material like The Shining. That's why it was good. People who think King movies/series are good in general don't remember that for every good movie/series there's 10 bad ones.

because its a Stephen King movie.

The only reason The Shining was good was Kubrick and it wasn't lifted from the novel. It was just a loose interpretation of the events.

Same as the series for IT was and hence why it was so good.

King's writing is amazingly descriptive but it always translates poorly to screen when it's not rewritten to work.

Wait for IT to see half the movie be about people seeing their own monsters and Pennywise being utterly boring and shit like he was in the novel.

Curry carried IT to it's heights. He made Pennywise interesting and though the writing was slow? It was at least competent while not ruining the series. At least until GIANT SPACE PSYCHIC SPIDER which was always a fucking stupid twist even in the novel.

Yes, but

>The new films will feature the more disturbing aspects of the novel that the original TV film wasn't able to touch upon. Some of these include the more extreme acts of violence committed by Pennywise and the bullies as well as the dark sexual undertones present throughout the novel (Eddie Kaspbrak's encounter with the Leper, the relationship between Henry Bowers and Patrick Hockstetter, etc). However it is very unlikely that the infamous child orgy scene from the novel will be included as not only would it earn the film an NC-17 rating, but it would also be severely traumatizing for the child actors to film as well.

Lol no they don't.

Remember The Hobbit series? Remember the deep canonical universe that Jackson wanted to involve in the Hobbit's appropriate time frame? Remember instead how it was a bloated film full of filler that missed the book's original feel and intention? And that came from the same guy that spent a decade making the LOTR series as a delicate passion project.

Splitting it up just means filler, a cliff hanger and hopefully more money. You said the original suffered length and pacing issues but youre ok with what'll probably be two two-hour films?

I agree to a certain extent. The film isn't going to be a blow by blow of the book because they never are. What's important is that it keeps all the key plot points, all the cool shit and is faithful to the overall FEEL of the book. The creepiness and Pennywise being the most important part not to fuck up. However, they have fucked up Pennywise. I'm not saying this as a lover of Tim Curry (although I am), I'm saying it as a lover of the book. I do not like the look of this Pennywise because it flies in the face of the character that was written. The book is clear in Pennywise's description and was a huge part of what made the book so scary. He barely even looks like a clown.

They were too busy trying to avoid comparisons to Curry and forgot about staying faithful to this crucial fucking part of the story. That's the part that's fucked me off.

Let's be frank.

Anyone who expects this film to be anything more to mediocre after the studio drove Fukunaga away is delusional.

Not because he's the end all be all of directors, but because they said they parted ways because they were looking for a more standard (safe and watered down for lowest common denominator) horror movie and handing the project off to a literally who that has only ever made extremely run of the mill, mediocre horror films.

I will be shocked if this movie is other than forgettable.

I agree with the other guy. This is a bad comparison. They used a relatively short book and bloated out the films with useless gash to make maximum profit from a shallow pool. With IT, it's the opposite. You couldn't do the book justice in one film. I needs two, one for the kids and their first encounter and one for them coming back as adults to finish what they started.

At least he had a creative vision for the project.

Unlike this film, which based on everything I've seen is going to be very pointless and extremely paint-by-numbers adaptation directed more by the studios execs as opposed to the rent-a-director they hired.

The clown costume people keep arguing over is a good example.

>How do we make the clown scary?
>Make him super edgy, with sinister makeup and a Victorian era costume

Missing the point that an innocent, childhood image of a generic clown being corrupted and showing up in bizzare locations and doing unsettling things is what made Pennywise horrifying to begin with.

For a guy who got so popular so fast and stayed that way, Stephen King writes an inordinate amount of weird shit.
I'm not mad at it, love his work and he's a far better writer than most popular authors, but the fact that the guy who wrote The Library Policeman is up there with JK Rowling in terms of the world's biggest writers is wild. It's not even always taboo or shocking content, just stuff like your example, really bizarre beyond-the-pale content you'd never expect a well-known cultural figure to get away with. Shit, the premise of Gerald's Game alone is more out there than some enfant terrible like Bret Easton Ellis' whole ouevre

Depends on what you want from the book (and this's all subjective and opinion, etc). Koontz, along with someone like Ketchum, is an undeniably brilliant writer of plot, but there's very little interesting about his prose. Reminds me of James Herbert in that regard- ruthlessly efficient storyteller.
In comparison, King's done a lot of interesting experiments with prose and perspective, particularly for a massively popular mainstream author. He popularised that whole "Thoughts-in-italics" technique, he's done some strange stuff with free indirect speech (The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, Gerald's Game, Skeleton Crew's "Nona"), and there's that weird, postmodern meta-stuff which shows up throughout his work.
It's all stuff cribbed from early Joyce and Shirley Jackson, but his style's more inventive and interesting than he gets credit for

t was a creature from an unknown realm outside the regions of space. When It came to planet Earth to feed, the creature would disguise itself as a colorful circus clown named "Pennywise", or morph into any other being it pleased (generally based on its target's loved ones or friends to lure them into traps or simply appear to them as their very worst fears).

It preferred to attract children, so it could capture and kill to devour them. It liked preying on innocent human children because they were easier to scare. According to the creature, frightened flesh tastes better.

The book ending didn't kill off the monsters suddenly. The characters only seen the legs of something huge in the mist. They were low on gas and heard a faint word on the radio.

Not Disney, but not "omg shocking" which did the job, because that's the only thing that sold it.

So how will Spider Pennywise look?
>>

Not sure about the book, but in the original series he ends up being a big demonic/reptilian spider creature in his true form, with a glowing organ on his chest that generates his illusions and conceals his body.

He's physically powerful but slow, so once they take out his chest organ they all run up and beat the chit out of his spider abdomen, killing him.

>in the original series he ends up being a big demonic/reptilian spider creature in his true form

That's funny. I could've sworn he turned out to be a big, stupid puppet that my whole family started groaning and laughing at, myself included.

The movie ending suited the movie better since the focus on the movie was how people go nuts and jump to insane conclusions when put in unfamiliar situations.

The religious nutter wasn't nearly as religious in the book and the focus was on the threat on the outside far more than the threat on the inside.

I think the ending for the film worked because the main cast ironically lost their cool just like the store-folk and jumped to insane conclusions (I.E the entire world was mist therefore we must kill ourselves).

The people that hated the "Military winning" are retarded since no creature in the mist was invincible. In the book they may be weird Cthulhu shit but in the film they were clearly an alternate worlds fauna and thus fire and bullets could kill them.

Here's the trailer description

>The trailer opens with footage of Bill Denbrough making a paper boat for his little brother Georgie. We then move outside, where Georgie is chasing his boat in a rainstorm as it floats next to the curb. Suddenly, Georgie runs right into a street barrier, which knocks him down on the ground. He then watches as his boat sails into a gutter. He runs to the gutter and tries to see if he can see his boat. As he looks deep into the sewers, Pennywise abruptly appears before the screen cuts to black.

>Then we are shown the members of the Loser’s Club meeting each other and realizing that they’ve all been seeing the same entity, before one of them finally says “The Clown.” Once that happens, theteaser then moves into its centerpiece, which shows the members of the Loser’s Club looking at pictures on a carousel slide projector that suddenly acquires a life of its own and begins moving through the slides at an increasingly alarming speed. The pictures are of Georgie and his parents, and each slide zooms in on Georgie’s face before cutting to his mother, whose hair is covering her face. As the projector moves from slide to slide, the hair moves out of his mother’s face, and her face is revealed to be that of Pennywise himself.

>The trailer then blows through a flurry of shots, as most trailers are wont to do. The most striking image from this succession of shots is the unforgettable moment when blood flows out of Beverly’s sink, only in Muschietti’s film it spews out like a geyser and blasts her in the face. There is also a sublime image of Pennywise approaching two of the children (he has them cornered against a wall), but the shot is framed in a way so that only his long, bony fingers fill the screen. The children are in the background, out of focus but clearly terrified.
>>
>>81028960
>The teaser ends with Bill walking down into his flooded basement, where Georgie’s ghost taunts him by repeatedly screaming “We all float down here!” before Pennywise rises from the water and rushes at him, in a moment that had the entire audience screaming. It is at this moment that the screen cuts to black and the word “IT” appears on screen.

People like me enjoy good special effects. The puppet spider was not a good special effect.
>>
>>81027744
Yeah, I seen the ending. The army arrives RIGHT after. Irony and subtlety be damned.

>my car is out of gas in the middle of nowhere
>toss my keys into convenient black hole
>gas truck drives by immediately
>honk honk

The argument is that it's unintentionally hilarious, yeah
>>
>>81029263
It's supposed to be ironic, but I guess you can find it funny if you want. The meme that it's "stupid because the military can't defeat muh cthulhu space monsters" or "The mist can't disappear because spooky reasons" is the thing I'm sick of hearing.

>>81029030
It was decent for being a TV series.

look at the walking dead, they drag that shit out as much as they can, shamelessly, because it brings in more money

I like the concept, if they just stuck him in the same suit as Tim Curry's pennywise people would complain about it being a ripoff. Really its going to come down to the preformance and the voice

The clown design is the only problem I have with it so far. They're making to obviously scary, and evil, it would be more unsettling to use a design that could conceivably be used in real life by a non-evil clown. Also I personally find the bright contrasting colors of curry's clown to be creepier looking than the dull, dark coloring of their new design.
>>
The thing that makes clowns scary is the confusion it causes in our brains. We can't quite be sure whether the strange face is human and safe, or inhuman, and dangerous. Making it obviously evil looking is more comforting to the brain than something less obvious.

No details for mist duration or military actions against stopping what started it is given (book or movie).

You are tired of different points of view on something you don't entirely understand yourself.
