It's not too hard. DC and Marvel have both been doing it for decades. You have high-level stuff (Avengers, Justice League, Fantastic Four, most X-Men stories), but then you also have Batman and Daredevil running around beating up on normal human criminals.

I thought Daredevil did a decent job of incorporating the events of Avengers into its first season, my only beef with it is that apparently a full-scale invasion of New York City only killed 12 people and destroyed a few city blocks.
