It depends - I mean what he did was horrific, but at the same time he felt truely terrible about what he had done - pretty much as he was doing it. He openly confesses how much he fucked up and his guilt, and is met with nothing but continuous torture and enslavement.

By far the best character on the show, it's a damn shame he seems to be getting ignored by D&D now. Though I really liked this scene, so maybe there's some hope.

The book does a much better job of making you understand his point of view. In the show it looks like he was just a shithead who turned on the Starks at the first opportunity he got. In the books he's much more complex.

Despite Ned treating him like a son, he grew to resent Ned and thought of himself as a hostage. He dreams of returning home to the Iron Isles with a warm welcome, but when he returns no one gives a shit and his Dad dislikes him. At his core he's a character who is insecure and looking for belonging. He's too immature and arrogant to realize that he left where he belonged in the first place though.

Theon is objectively one of the most complex characters in the series. Jaime Lannister is really the only one that comes close. Theon's chapters in Winterfell in DWD are among the best chapters in the series.

Theon didn't deserve anything close to what he got. People that still hate Theon are the absolute plebbest of plebs who convince themselves that the Starks are the absolute good guys and they have to root for them no matter what. Theon betrayed the Starks so he has to get an unbelievably excessive punishment for revenge porn. That's not how GRRM wrote the character. He was forced to chose between his captor who crushed his family, but who he also greatly respects and was mostly raised by, and his father who hates him. This is the kind of tough choice that GRRM does so well that DnD and showplebs don't appreciate.
