I wish more posts were available in their raw state, as primary source material for anyone to consider, and to leave for others in just that way, the evidence uncontaminated by compulsive proprietary misapplied replying, “quoting”, the purposeful “pointing things out” that cuts a road straight and narrow through the post-jungle; we barrel through thinking we’re going somewhere and miss it all. Better to just be pointed to the territory, to put in time exploring, roughing it, on our own. For the straight scoop we need the whole scoop, or no less than the clues entire and without rearrangement. O, for a General of Archive Posts, or board, thread, a shit-general of telling discards accessible to all talented posters/repliers. A wilderness haven salvaged from shitposting.

What IS cinema?
>>
>>80979324
So please answer my question, What is cinema's purpose when it comes to religious or spiritual art. Religious myths can be True even though they aren't "real". What is your metaphysical or epistemological opinion on what is "real" or "fairy tales"?

Is morality not real? Because in order to find Moral or Ethical Truth, a "fairy tale" must be constructed, but that doesn't mean the story is "untrue". What about what happens after death? What should cinema do to explore that idea?

I hugely underestimated how big the Italian posters were when I first ordered, but I'm glad i did as probably wouldn't have ordered

what's your vhs watching set-up like? I have considered getting a tv/vhs combo before but decided too impractical and the good tapes seem too expensive for the novelty
>>
>>80979715
How can one explore those ideas without transcending reality? Religious and spiritual ideas are by definition, above reality.

>Don't question my faith
Is that your view of reality or are you afraid to answer my question?

>It is real. You should practice it.
You seem to be selectively answering my questions. How should cinema explore those topics while strictly adhering to the rules of realism? These ideas are ones that exist beyond the objective realm and can only be expressed subjectively.

I'm going to go eat, but I'll bring this back up next time I post my profile. Nice talking to you.

Yeah, the Italian posters are giant. Like way too big haha. Still want em tho.

My set up sucks right now from having just moved. Been watching on a shitty hd tv, need to make room, also most of my tapes are sadly in storage.

I always tell people to collect though, plenty of tapes go for way too much but if you aren't bad at waiting you could probably find a good deal on most. I just hit a ridiculous lot last year in person with a ton of rare tapes for free.

Ha ha, if I continuously mock while not posing any thorough and logical counterargument with sources, I will sustain my position of being the smartsiest!

No, the reason I'm asking for an argument as to why montage is superior to the long take and why propaganda should be considered high art is because according to this guy's list >>80980318 montage films were the greatest silent films. His criteria >>80981203 "Story, characters (development and otherwise), visuals, and impact on cinema as a whole." So a biopic that employed techniques considered outdated by Andre Bazin in "What is Cinema Vol. 1" contributed more to cinema as a whole and a stragightforward biopic story is apparently more impressive than a nonlinear one. An adaptation linked to another medium is also apparently the greatest achievement in the medium.

Now answer the question. Why is the montage superior to the long take?

Film should be fast. It should utilize our ability to process information in the blink of an eye. It's its greatest asset as an artistic form of expression to show images in sequence at varying speeds while remaining succinct. It can toy with the way we register, store, and associate different images to great effect.
Those old filmmakers were ignorant. They only glazed over films artistic capability.

And as for Andre Bazin, his chase for verisimilitude was simple naivety.

The long take is superior to the montage because it has developed more in the history of cinema. Montage has not surpassed its primitive roots in parallel editing, accelerated action, and montage by attraction. The long take is also more realistic than montage insomuch that the actions shown in a production can be recreated in real life which shows cinema's systematic relationship with reality and its ability to snapshot a history of reality in motion. The long take also demands more participation not only behind the camera but from the audience as well to deconstruct and analyze the composition of a shot.

What you're talking about is music videos NOT film. Film as a medium is meant to snapshot a history of reality in motion and to expose it through different compositions. And these different compostions ought to be SUBTLE and complex just like life, as cinema has a systematic relationship with reality. So no wide angles that call attention to themselves and serve to distort reality. Subtle complexities in productions also demand more attention and participation from the viewer to pick up on.

But through montage there is not much capability. With the long take, there are many more modes of conveyance. Montage can only work in three different modes (parallel, accelerated, and attraction). Slow motion was already played with by Rene Clair in the 20's. Speed and montage are PRIMITIVE elements of cinema, and you only believe they are modern because of the influence of MTV music videos on cinema's degradation since the 80's. It's why most young people say movies from the 60's and 70's are "boring" or "nothing happens" because of their influence by Andre Bazin's theories and the new developments of direct cinema and cinema verite

Napoleon was a visual masterpiece for it's time. I could go on and on about the astounding triptych sequences and the coloring but at this point if you haven't seen it yourself, I recommend you do if you are truly interested in film. It's an epic unlike any other.

My fondness toward Napoleon aside, I've still greatly enjoyed the works of Griffith and I can't wait to explore his filmography further. I'm open to any recommendations if you have them.

False equivalence. Fundamentally speaking, in music videos, visual accompanies music. Some movies are edited to music, but that's not what I'm talking about.

And why shouldn't film be as complex as music? You're propose film remain in its most primitive state. At the least, an educational tool (not art), and at must exploiting mans primitive need to mimic what they see.

Why should art be realistic? Are you ignoring the history of the fine arts?

I don't think so. You need to cut eventually, unless there's just nothing going on in the film. Also, all those basic elements of composing a picture applies to all shot regardless of their length.

Lastly, in regard to this "music videos use montage editing so montage editing is strictly a music video device" idea. Most music videos today use long takes. I believe a Corey Feldman music video was shot in one long take but I'd rather not search for it. It's usually coupled with slow motion because it's easier to match with music.

Neither are you. You can't answer why realism is so important to.
I'm saying editing is more crucial to film as an art form because it gives it form and creates an economy of images that the spectator can draw meaning from. On top of that, films can also be fast, conveying abstract thought faster than it would take to, for example, read a book.
These aspects of film are unique to it as a visual medium, unlike composition.

>>80988000
No, montage is the compiling of many shots into a whole.

>>80988037
There use to be so many trip friends but now they're all gone except for tsar, Healey, and sometimes hentaicop. ;_;
>>
>>80988391
You need to know your cinematic terminology before you speak.

>Neither are you. You can't answer why realism is so important to.
I already argues it here >>80986612
And I don't need to really argue the advocation of realism in film because any notable filmmaker worth a damn in the history of film already do and the invention of film as a medium was to capture reality in motion. That's why early films are just actuality documentaries and recorded events.

>I'm saying editing is more crucial to film as an art form because it gives it form and creates an economy of images that the spectator can draw meaning from.
Editing is not what separates film as a medium, camera movement is, aka the long take. The long take is also superior to the montage because it has developed more in the history of cinema. >No, it is the juxtaposition of multiple shots often in a fast-paced manner
I said "technically" because I was signalling that I was being a smart ass by saying that. Even those my definition is the literal meaning, I acknowledge that the meaning of it has changed. And the images in a montage aren't always juxtaposed.

Movement can be conveyed in paintings. Movement alone in the camera is meaningless without complimenting and/or contrasting with other motions and images. Just like many disparate words on a page are meaningless unless formed into sentences. Film however can make these sentences shorter.

I can't really say much more about this post since you're repeating yourself verbatim again. Do you just write all your post out before hand then only slightly edited them to fit with the current argument?

Show me a camera movement in a painting. A painting is static. If you're talking about showing multiple paintings in succession, then technically editing can be implemented there in decisions of which paintings to show next and when to show them, and essentially what you're showing is a motion picture now.

It took you 20 minutes to write that response. You might as well have taken an hour to come up with a half-decent one. I'm not arrogant, I just know my place. Know yours. You've already proven it by not giving me a thorough argument as to why Markoupolos' work is more significant than Mekas'

It took me 20 minutes to post it but it wasn't 20 minutes of continuous writing. I have better things to do with my time than shit post in this general for 12 hours straight.

Watching cartoons isn't meaningful activity.

Jonas has a vlog on his website that he updates to this day. Mark pulled all his films out of distribution, moved to Europe, and spent the subsequent 20+ years filmming and editing a 80 some hour film that's only screened quad annually on a plot of land in the countryside of Arcadia, Greece. You can't compare them.
>>
Not that one is better than the other. It's just to demonstrate the different side sets these filmmakers work under.

And I won't compare them further for the reason I expressed before. Maybe if someone asked me because they were genuinely interested in the two I would. But I can tell you just want me to prove myself. To that I say, you can't make me do anything.

And until you do so, you will know your place below me.

You don't even have an account.
You're nobody to me.

Posting screenshots won't make your argument for you. You're not a mudhutter are you? Use English then.

And I don't need an account to observe all of you and know that you're below me.
>>
Should I spam poster instead?

Posters and niggers give you satisfaction.

You will only get arguments, theories, and condescension now
