Pretty sure dune's success was a fluke since herbert's writing post-4 and sometimes during 4 was just as bad as everything his son did. Honestly if frank had been alive longer I could've seen him writing that water worms of dune bullshit.

Basically don't read past Messiah unless you have a morbid curiosity or can ignore the weird shit. God help you if you ever get to Heretics of Dune

Mainly Herbert based fighting prowess on both physical power and spiritual/mental willpower. Both were boosted by the environment that people were raised in and lived in.

At this time most of humanity has gone soft. The emperor gets all his troops from Salusa Secundus which is a prison planet. It's basically like the prison in TDKR where Bane grew up, people can do whatever they want so only the strong survive. The emperor secretly takes the strongest people from Secundus and trains them to be Sardukar.

In the book the only place worse than Secundus is Dune (Arrakis) and because of the conditions the people there had to survive they became even more hardened and better warriors than the Sardukar.

That's basically the rationale behind it.

Yeah, it doesn't hold up completely. It's just part of the story.

You can't discount different characters of race/region when it comes to actually battle though, it's a real contributor. Japan invaded China with only half a million troops at the start of WWII and won every battle and took their capital despite being vastly outnumbered at every stage. Some people are just better at war, and some people are just terrible at it.

But that's where Dune's shields are bullshit. If someone is willing to sacrifice and shoot his own or his bros shield, you can wipe out much more enemies units. Basically suicide tactics. Anyways, for scifi of that year, first book was good and had neet things for it's time.

Other questions - did Dune video games spoiled books for anyone else ? After playing video games i expected much more military action in books, but nope.
