Originally the movie should have been about Michael fighting against his remaining brother Tom Hagen.
But they failed to convince Robert Duvall to play again the part.
So they wrote a new subpar story, in which Coppola shoehorned his daughter.

Coppola had no interest in making it but his production company suffered a series of losses and was about to close putting all of his friends out of work so he agreed to make a movie he had no interest in because it would make him millions of dollarydoos.
