>>
what's to debate?

hannibal for mads was some garbage television that gave him some room to practice acting which he didn't get good with until rogue 1
>>
I want another Hannibal movie god fucking damnit

I actually enjoy the three! Brian Cox is pretty good to as the most realistic portrait of Hannibal.

Mads' Hannibal is how I actually imagine a fedora-tipper would write Hannibal.

He's a really boring character that people, for reasons beyond me, fall in love with.
>>
they're both pretty great and hopkins was always my hannibal. But Mads was just so good and we spent more time with him so that takes it for me.
>>
>>80931452
Hopkins outside of confinement was actually pretty lacklustre. Might've been Red Dragon's poor writing, but at the start, Hopkins was laughable.

As a result I give the edge to Mads. He was good in and out.
>>
>>80931452
Mads

Hopkins seemed too violent and psychopathic
Like he'd hurt people just because he could
Which isn't very much like Hannibal's character is suppose to be
>>
i like mads' hannibal but he's too perfect
hopkins is a bit more insane which makes him a lot more interesting

Norton played it vulnerable as fuck.

Toothfairy vs. Buffalo Bill
>>
>80931452
The real question is Who would be the better dinner host?>
>>
>>80931452

I thought Hopkins was great and he was justifiably hailed as one of the best portrayals of a psychopath in a movie for the longest time.

After Hannibal I went back and re-watched it for the 6th time or so and I couldn't stop feeling that Hopkins was chewing the scenery.

What made Mads so good was the restraint. It was better. Unfortunately the show went off the fucking rails completely and isn't a complete story.

So how do you judge it then? Mads is better but what he's in is unfinished and gets stupid. Hopkins is in an all time classic movie.
>>
>>80932321
It's the first time I see anyone advocating for Norton... Or this is bait?
>>
>>80932325

Touche, but while Hopkins doesn't fit the look of how he was originally supposed to be, he popularized the version that most closely related the character whereas Mads character was turned into an artsy homo.

when I mean fanfiction, I suppose I'm talking about deviating from the character. Even if hopkin's doesn't look how I thought he should look book to movie etc. He still had everything else

Mads has the aesthetic look but nothing else about his character fits.. so I guess the great debate is they're polar opposites of same character.
>>
>>80932426
It's not. Graham is a borderline schizoid psychopath himself. Norton is the only character who showed that depth. He was close to getting off on Dolarhyde's murders himself.
>>
>>80932421

Mads character even during season 1 is completely different from how the character was supposed to be.

>>
>>80932524

Did you just forgo looking at subtext between Will and Mad's character? The guy that created the show can't help himself. Which is why he turned both male leads into secret gay lovers.
>>
>>80932594
They weren't gay lovers.
Will and Hannibal loved each other purely platonically
>>
>>80932446
the only homo thing in the show was the final scene imo
i mean it was gay as fuck but other than that this homolust stuff is pretty exaggerated
>>
Mads Hannibal is complete garbage. Stop letting your infatuation with him cloud your opinion over how bad his portrayal was and how awful the tv series was.

I found the Tooth Fairy's backstory to be more interesting in both adaptations, it's also kind of sad knowing deep down he wants to stop but can't control the "great red dragon" inside him.

Buffalo Bill is still god tier though, Mason Verger isn't half bad either.
>>
>>80932843
Bill's MO is nightmare material but then so is Dolarhyde's

It's a tough call.
>>
>>80932696

Because neither Hannibal nor Will are gay in the books, which was biggest complaint about the show and reason why ratings took a massive dive. It also didn't help that it lived in friday death slot.

I'm not opposed to adaptations changing things but this thread is arguing about character portrayal and at most charitable, mad's character stops being hannibal in season 3.

which is why Hopkins will always be the go to hannibal. His limited appearance in SOTL helped character greatly.

>>80932655

It looked pretty gay despite what you think is going on under the hood, metaphorically speaking.

>>80932669

>>
>>80932655
they hinted at a gay attraction fairly early, something which has become really common in TV lately. I'm not sure if its because pseudo-intellectuals think conflating platonic love with sexual attraction somehow makes for smart writing, or pandering to teenage fangirls

Or gay people in the threads were just reacting to what they were seeing?

Imagine if you will hot chicks were on screen and you saw some 90's braless nipple action or something. It would be subtle but as males, a good deal would react to it.

Animal reactions to subtext are a thing. If anything they were only pulling on gayness that was there.
>>
>>80933041
>>be stuck in a hole in some godforsaken basement for a week and getting starved so you can eventually be shot and have your skin be used for some wacko's woman suit

By the way, sometimes he'd slip a noose around their necks and push them down the stairs so they'd be strangulated or break their necks.
>>
>>80932321
Norton completely missed the main point of Graham as a character: that he's good at what he does because he's just as messed up as the people he hunts. Norton played Graham as if he was gifted, the others played him as if he was damaged, which is how the character was written.

I think they each capture an aspect of psychopathy in their performance. Hopkins is genuinely unnerving. He's the sort of guy you're afraid of finding in your room one night. He's sadistic and calculatingly violent and the performance is terrifying. Mads' Hannibal represents the seductive, charismatic dimension of psychopathy. By the end I'd have practically have LET him eat me.
>>
>>80935061
I don't get why people see it so black and white.
He'd be chasing Will if he was a talking donkey for all that it matters.
Hannibal is primarily in love with his own world view and philosophy. Meeting somebody who can not only understand him but actually see everything as he does while still being able to defy him is what got him all hot and bothered.

Seriously, it was a bit much. I don't know if it was Pitt's own initiative or if he was directed this way but they should've toned him down a bit. Hannibal > Silence of the Lambs > Red Dragon > Manhunter > Hannibal Rising
>>
>>80933110
Not in the first two books, and especially not in Red Dragon. Before Hopkins became a cultural phenomenon and Harris started adding things to his backstory, Hannibal was just a smart serial killer that was good at messing with people. Brian Cox portrays him exactly how he was written in Red Dragon.

You can't really compare the Hannibal of the first two books to the superpowered samurai with mind-control powers he ended up becoming.

Hopkins is genuinely unnerving and feels more flawed in a way that makes him even more terrifying. Things like his inability to part with the parts of the letter that praised his work or the way Will was able to manipulate him into helping because Lecter couldn't resist.

Mads has more of a reserved chessmaster portrayal. He's never really scary it's just fun to watch him play his games. There's not even so much of a quiet intensity as there is just quiet.

Mads had the potential to rival Hopkins but it just never went anywhere. Puppet master continued to keep his cool even when butchering all the main characters at the end of Season 2. And the vices and weaknesses never felt like such for Mads. I never actually believed he loved whatsername as a daughter. Even his mistakes felt calculated.

>>
>>80931452
They make great Hannibals for the time period they played the character.

Mads is the cocksure young Hannibal who's still sowing the seeds of future serial killers, his legacy to the world.

Hopkins is Hannibal after twenty to thirty years in jail, over the years he became more and more jaded as those close to him, Will and anyone else still alive, forgot about him and moved on with their lives.

Some shits like Mason buying the Lecter castle and dismantling rock by rock and sending him pictures, or an earthquake destroying that chuch he liked so much triggered him into remembering the time before he got caught, the real kicker would be for Mason, or Will or Lady Murasaki to send him the picture of the bathtub where Misha got killed and one day seeing the few guys that forced him to eat Misha to survive, if there's any, on a random mundane page making him lose his shit for real and this is where Hannibal is gone from the little shit he was in the TV serie to the creepy movie Lecter.

Cox's Hannibal would be 10/15 years after Mads got put in jail, he's still got some of his flair but you can see the transition to Hopkins.

Hopkins is a more 'realistic' take on it, like he looks and sounds more like a real person you meet day to day, which in its own way makes him more frightening

However, Mads is closer to how the character was written. Honestly, Hannibal is basically written as a super human - he can do pretty much absolutely everything to an extremely high level. Mads delivers the air of superiority far better, he just comes off more suave and sophisticated, but is very, very good at switching that behaviour off very quickly and going all dead eyed and scary. The scene where he was trying to break into the pantry with Jack inside was one of those moments.

He wasn't just trying to kick the door down, he was hurling himself into it, like an animal or something - it came across so viscous. Only then to quickly deliver a super wounded expression with Will moments later over Abigail
>>
The physical representation of Hannibal is closer to Hopkins, he was written as a short, pudgy unremarkable man.

The mental representation is better represented by Mads, Hannibal was a fine intellectual, loved arts in any form, literature, hadamazing memory and great restraint and control.

To be honest, a perfect fit would be Anthony Hopkins acting as Mads did, it was his perk, he was a shitty manlet that could manipulate and make everyone fall for him through his aretè alone.

Guy's a hustler. He has one star patient, who quite stubbornly refuses to work with him. Sure, putting the moves on Starling looks like fun, but he's also hoping that she can get a rise out of Lecter.

He's like a guy who has a treasure chest but no key, scrabbling around trying to find some way to open the thing.

Man if only they got picked up by Showtime or something, they could get away with so much.

>>80937331
Agreed. I'm quite old compared to most people here, at forty-six. I first read Red Dragon because a coroner recommended it to me when I was a teenager. Cox nailed it ... gave Lecter a kind of feral, lion-pacing-in-a-cage feel.

Zip that little pointer right on down to the letter G ...

they already got away with a lot
its by far the most violent show i've ever seen on television

The Angels and the Skin ripping off when the guy escaped the eye collage for example

Either way, it's quite rare you actually see a kill take place the violence is usually not shown

Is the show meant to be a prequel to the movies or something? I just finished the dude trying to rebirth corpses with horses, so I might get an answer later on, but I can't see Mad's Hannibal becoming Hopkins, they're like entirely different personalities.

He had to make it look like he almost died against the cellist though. It'd raise a lot of questions if Hannibal just easily disposed of a hardened psychopath with no problem. He needed it to make it look like he struggled and nearly lost.

Just stick to the narrative of the books better, not blowing their loads early. Condense Season 1 and 2 into a single, longer season, or two smaller seasons, where Will succesfully turns the tables on Hannibal after he's accused of insanity that ends with Will catching Hannibal, have him sever ties with him by saying, "I've stopped empathizing with you," Hannibal gets burned by his obsession with Will. It seriously annoyed me how thick Hannibal's plot armor was, he was like reverse Batman. His capture means nothing if he gives himself up.

Time skip to the next season, do Red Dragon properly, have Freddy Lounds get burned, even if that means having to switch him back to being a man, which is why I suspect they just had to bring out Chilton the whipping boy again. I'd sprinkle in snippets of Hannibal Rising as flashbacks in this and the next season from Hannibal's POV in the prison.

Next season would be Silence of the Lambs followed by Hannibal, with Ellen Page as Clarice. Apparently they couldn't get the right to Clarice's character from Fox which is why they butchered the plot of Hannibal into Season 3, so I don't blame Fuller for that. Still, a man can dream.

>Alana and Margot reveal they harvested his sperm by pressing a cattle prod against his prostate. That’ll be far from the most invasive probe of the hour, though, as Mason’s struggle with his sister – now able to produce an heir to her big bro’s fortune and avoid the estate going to the Southern Baptist Church — wrestles him into his eel tank. As Alana and Margot hold him under water, the slithering creature finds Mason’s foul mouth, forces its way down his throat, and ends his reign of terror.

Christ! What a terrible final season.
>Everybody but Abigail survives Mizumono and heals up like Wolverine

>Hannibal turns himself in and spends three years in captivity because "Gosh I just can't live without Will <3"

>>80947809
In the books that twist justify better. Dolarhyde fuck off Will's face live him like picazzo painting and Molly gets tired of Will shit and dump him after a while. In sotl Crawford says to Clarice Will is useles to de FBI since he is an lonley alcoholic.
