I think the best horror movies come from things society is dealing with deep down. The Thing and Alien sprung from the fear of the unknown that comes with exploration, Godzilla comes from mankind's own destructive prowess and Blair Witch Project sprung from the ubiquity of handheld video cameras.

Get Out reflects the unease that exists between races and pits them against each other, playing off the fear everyone has of being seen as "other" and especially the fear modern blacks have of being hijacked by a white culture. You can disagree but what has made it so popular is that black people are responding to the sentiment and identifying with the fear. We're all cracka ass white folk so we can call it bullshit but Get Out expresses something that apparently black people can relate to.

Anyway I'm white and I thought it was pretty okay.

The fear is sort of two fold too.

On one hand black people fear white culture is becoming their own culture, and the struggle for uniqueness and identity is there. As well as the fear of white people fetishizing and using black people to their own gain. Its all a form of othering.

But on the other hand its also a fear of whites as well, the idea that black people are becoming more and more vocal, powerful, prominent, means that their own control and power in the world is slipping. So thats something that they would want to control and take over.

I think black and white people that don't like Get Out don't like it because it does what an actual horror movie is supposed to do, it brings up and touches upon ideas that scare and disturb them and make then uncomfortable.

So as a horror film its pretty successful.
