>"Nerd culture is the product of a late capitalist conspiracy, designed to infantalize the consumer as a means of non-aggressive control."
- Simon Pegg

>"A sweet-faced boy of twelve told me proudly that he had seen Star Wars over a hundred times? I said, 'do you think you could promise never to see Star Wars again?' He burst into tears. I just hope the lad, now in his thirties, is not living in a fantasy world of secondhand, childish banalities"
- Alec Guinness

>"I don't think they are making [comic book movies] an elevated art form, I think it's still just Batman running around in a stupid cape.. It's for kids, it's adolescent in its core. "
- David Cronenberg

>"I don't want to see or make films about super heroes that fly around in spandex and a cape solving the problems of the world. I think it's fine for children, children of all ages by the way, but it's not for me."
- William Friedkin

>“They have been poison, this cultural genocide, Because the audience is so overexposed to plot and explosions and shit that doesn’t mean nothing about the experience of being human.”
- Alejandro Iñárritu

>"Superman makes me vomit, Batman and all of that. That whole empire... this religion... It is so important that superheroes suffer... I don't give a damn, I shit on the United States."
- Alejandro Jodorowsky

>"To my mind, this embracing of what were unambiguously children's characters at their mid-20th century inception seems to indicate a retreat from the admittedly overwhelming complexities of modern existence"
- Alan Moore

>"The movies are for children but they don't want to admit that... There is a small group of fans that do not like comic sidekicks. They want the films to be tough like The Terminator, and they get very upset and opinionated about anything that has anything to do with being childlike."
- George Lucas

As a guy who actually collected comic books when i was younger, i agree with pegg.

Pegg and guys like us were actual nerds, ostracized for this shit back in the day.
Now literally every basic bitch is a walking cliche surrounded by funkopops and wearing black rim glasses.
Were did all the adults go.

Would probably be more rebellious in this age to own a mortgage and drink wine at cocktail parties, are whatever adults fucking did a long time ago.

I was wondering about this too.
How come capeshit movies always sell over a billion dollars worldwide, but I cant recollect what ever happened to iron man 1,2,3, thor 1,2, daredevil, recent batman and superman, antman, dr. strange, etc..

I think it's because it's watered down, bland, commercial pop movies that do not want to offend anybody and has sequel-itus.

Same thing happened with the zombie movies, star wars, and pixar.

capitalists dont take risks in the media business because they could lose money, they homogenize and sterilize all creativity in order to appeal to a mass market.

But its become so transparent in this age, it happened during the obama years, all music, and movies became so stale and homogenized.

The deliberate debasement of culture is the real end of history, not the end of the Cold War. History isn't economics or conflict, it's culture. Isn't it awful to think that all of these thousands of years of progress built up from oral tradition, to Gilgamesh, the Aenid, Beowulf, Dante, Canterbury Tales, Richard III, Dorian Gray, Moby Dick, Gravity's Rainbow. This is what it was all leading up to. An incomprehensible muddle of glossy nonsense. Sure these can be found for free but who will bother? Once we lose the foundations we'll have nothing substantial to build on. We're entering a cultural dark age and I honestly don't see this stuff being found again later down the line. This is the end of culture.
>>
>>80921317
>Would probably be more rebellious in this age to own a mortgage and drink wine at cocktail parties, are whatever adults fucking did a long time ago.

>>
>>80921452
But he is. Someone who lives their entire lives in fantasy and never grows up mentally is much easier to control than someone who lives in the now and is mature.

The "control" here is intended for stabilization of commerce. That is, you do a shitty job, you get paid next to nothing, you go into debt, you stay in debt, you give all your money to someone else. If you dislike this, you watch a movie about an uprising so that you can live vicariously through the protagonist. Once you are done watching the movie, you no longer have pent up problems with the people who lord over you. It pacifies you.

From that point, you can be controlled quite easily. You can even be told to destroy your own race and you will do it willingly.

"Nerd Culture" is all based on nostalgia, it's just another shitty trend in media, that's why nearly every large Hollywood Movie is a remake, reboot, or based on something nostalgic. This shit is ruining everything, they know that it will sell just because it has a logo on it. Nerd culture is ruining creativity.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/2016/04/14/25-films-set-for-a-reboot-or-remake/
This link is a list of 25 movies being seriously considered for remakes/reboots. On the list are classics like Mary Poppins, Bill and Teds Excellent adventure, and Police Academy. A movie needs remaking when it doesn't sit right or needs updating, these movies are being made just for money. Disney has been doing this shit for years, look at the live action remakes. They're the same movies as the classic cartoons but now it's live action, twice the profit for one idea. Ghostbusters, Power Rangers, Spider-Man Homecoming, Fantastic 4, 5 more Star Wars films, Indiana Jones 5, Jamunji, The Mummy and more. When will it end

the end of history was the end of hope, nothing original is made anymore because the real future is grim.
The real future is the destruction of the middle class, there will only be the extremely rich and extremely poor while we live in mega city slums and all nations and peoples and borders are destroyed.
They see us all as interchangeable cogs, no humanity, a completely atomized and destroyed society only here to make them money.

The only place we can change things is in the past.

Does every movie have to be deep and serious to be worthwhile? Is it childish to watch an action movie or a comedy?

The quotes in the OP seem to be suggesting that if you enjoy a film with these certain characters, then you're a childish affront to the film industry; the lowest common denominator to be catered to. Why can't one enjoy both a deep drama and a popcorn action flick for two different reasons. Trying to pigeon hole everyone as a fat neck beard fanboy opposed to patricians is disingenuous.

Economic systems will never become "unnecessary." They don't have to describe something that we put in place to manage wealth. Economic systems are what describe our relation to material goods.

I don't think a system in which prices are zero can be called capitalism anymore, so maybe we agree on that point. I just disagree that capitalism will get us there.

Nobody's claiming capitalism will be ended by magic. There are many pieces of literature out there that detail a lot of contradictions in capitalism that you probably will never read just because you identify as an anti-communist. I just want to say to you before I go it's okay to be well-rounded in your reading, especially within economics and political philosophy. I really mean it man, and I hope you don't take that the wrong way.

By the way I'm not a socialist, so please try to keep the scope of the argument to the staying power of capitalism. Making statements like 'socialism is retarded' isn't helping anyone.

The ONLY fucking thing that can get us there is voluntary human interaction ie. capitalism

>the current state of American society where we have a huge inequality in terms of wealth and megacorporations

When this inevitable collapse happens, the world won't suddenly turn socialist.

Actually there weren't.
Capitalism is literally the natural state of economics and commerce without interference by political mucking.
Capitalism is literally as old as commerce.

In 15,000 BC when Angolans first started using Obsidian as a medium of trade for other goods and services, it was a Capitalist model of commerce.

I'm happy we have capitalism(as the marxist definition of capitalism, private control over the means of production).
But what we want is FREE MARKET capitalism, where there is no central bank and prices come down all the time instead of up, and the working class is empowered by higher living standards which raise every year.

Actually if you weren't a retard you'd know I didn't say that.

Capitalism is the exchange of goods where the market, i.e. supply and demand, determines the price, value and exchange-rate of goods and services rather than an intruding political body.

Tugg traded Ogg four bits of Obsidian for a turnip because that's what Tugg was willing to pay for the Turnip, which he was unable or unwilling to acquire at a lower price elsewhere.

Blame advertising and PR firms. No, seriously, they've screwed the modern world up worse than anybody.

>majority of economy is based on consumption of luxury (i.e. unnecessary) goods
>psychological trickery used to artificially create demand
>in particular, "lifestyles" are invented, which exploit people's need to belong

It really is an extraordinary system. No subculture is beyond monetisation. Everything from rap to punk to nerd, can be processed down and served up in flavourless bite-sized chunks you use to signal your individuality.

Advanced industrial civilization survives thanks to easily exploited and abundant energy resources. Those resources are becoming more scarce and what remains is more difficult to extract. People sense that we live in a civilization bound for destruction and this has produced a mass infantile psychosis. Denial and fantasy is a coping mechanism. This is why so many people connect popular culture with current events. They want to retreat totally into fantasy. In other eras mass panic might have produced resistance, but in the 20th century the elites devoted themselves to crushing all competing ideologies. Now the public is almost completely pacified. None of the great leaders of history could do anything with the degenerated masses of today. Everything is judged by its entertainment value and all discipline or hierarchy has been rejected as totalitarian. This means that we are being led toward catastrophe by an elite which has no plan for the future. They can only manage the system day to day, they have no scheme for the energy scarce world of tomorrow. The starving masses will consume each other in a worldwide holocaust once we lose the energy resources which are the foundation of this society. There won't be mega cities because the population is set to plummet.

If pinochet didn't do what he did, chile would be a shithole like Cuba.

In 1973, the year General Pinochet brutally seized the government, Chile's unemployment rate was 4.3%. In 1983, after ten years of free-market modernization, unemployment reached 22%. Real wages declined by 40% under military rule.

In 1970, 20% of Chile's population lived in poverty. By 1990, the year 'President' Pinochet left office, the number of destitute had doubled to 40%. Quite a miracle.

The problem with this theory is that when you actually LOOK at modern society in relation to the rest of history you realize that we're actually more self-aware and independent now then at any other point in history.

You assert that infantile and low-quality entertainment is a form of economic control, but the average person is LESS subservient to the vagaries of the financial elite now, then before.

Maybe your memory is bad sempai. Off the top of my head (I've watched these movies a max of two times)
>IM1
Tony Stark, a rich businessman, gets captured by terrorists, makes a suit, escapes, his buddy who helped him dies, he has shit in his chest. Improves his suit, decides to stop selling shit, but surprise his business partner turns into an evil jew and reuses the first suit. A fight happens and Stark wins.
>IM2
This is where I have issues, because the film was terrible. I believe Tony has an alcohol problem, there was a guy with 'burdz' who had electric whip things, and the main villain was someone Tony sued for stealing technology? The end fight scene involved Tony and his military buddy taking on a ton of robots.
>IM3
Tony has PTSD, his suits break, his girlfriend (wife?) leaves him, human bombs are blowing up everywhere, Tony befriends a kid, saves the day by fighting off a superhuman dude who Tony scorned as a kid.
>Thor
God of thunder gets demoted to mortal of Thunder, has to redeem himself as his dick brother tries to steal his place. In the end a warmachine is awoken, Thor redeems himself and fights.
>Thor 2

Well, dumbass, Batman fought Superman, who was being set up by Lex Luthor to look evil, and who also set us up a bomb in a disabled guy's wheelchair (hid in lead so Supes couldn't see it). Wonder Woman investigates and is caught by Batman. Luthor uses the body of Zod to create a monster (forgot it's fucking name). Supes sacrifices himself to kill it.
>antman
Thief breaks into scientist's house, gets roped into a plan to save the scientist's company.

All the hype goes into the advertisement or one scene they try to meme in a preview until you're sick of it, classic Disney tactic for their modern shows.

Case in point, the top ten grossing films also use this exact same formula and it's why they are the movie equivalent to fast food.

He grew up in an era where some of the biggest computer games were produced by a couple of people above a chip shop and comics artists were barely scraping by.

He's a fucking ungrateful shit. But then, his university thesis was "A Marxist overview of popular 1970s cinema and hegemonic discourses" so maybe he's always been a brained-washed moron.
>>
>>80931096
they're right though. the thing is, people think they're standing on a treestump screaming these things, trying to stop people from watching capeshit and the likes. no, reporters ask them their opinion and they give the obvious answer: Superhero movies aren't great "cinema". what do you want well-watched(or whatever you call it for films) people to say? I think McDonald's hamburgers taste great, but I would expect a food critic to be more discerning than I am.

the problem is that people think opinions are all equal, when really how much you know about a field gives your opinion more or less weight. if you've only seen 100 films in your entire life, you may think your favorite one is extraordinarily powerful, innovative, thoughtful, until you've seen four hundred more and realize your old favorite is actually, in the grand scheme of things, mediocre. most of them are experts of their media. you don't have to agree with them, but make sure you're not overestimating your own expertise when you disagree.

of course pegg being the exception

>“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

I think the problem these quotes are alluding to is: comic book movie are the most popular and successful genre of cinema at the moment. Let that sink in. Movies based on what began as children's books are now the main pull for cinema as a medium. Now, there's nothing wrong with watching a silly super hero film (I say silly because the vast majority don't even try to have something meaningful to say about anything except basic shit like "Love your kids" and "Sometimes bad thing causes good thing"), but the fact that this money printer of a genre is so fucking popular that it makes it hard to watch anything that isnt your typical dumbed down by-the-numbers action film, or sometimes your usual shitty romance or shitty horror flick, and most films with a vision or some sort of artistic merit struggle in the box office, is concerning to a degree. This is especially understandable coming from people like Iñarritu who, like him or not, sees his films as vehicles for showcasing the human experience. Hope that made sense somehow.

>>80932886
Sure, 100% with you on that. The concern is with the audience, who ends up curating what's shown in theatres by voting with their wallets and watching all this Disney-Marvel slime that keeps being made . The Nice Guys was a popular recent case. Sure, not exactly a cinematic masterpiece for the ages, but a film focused on character interaction that raises the stakes with character development and not with big dumb setpieces and, sadly, that's something fresh to see made these days. And it ate shit at the box office for not having Captain America on the poster, not even based Goose and Crowe, who gave good performances, could save it from failing. Bad sales means less chances films like these, uninfluenced by current cinematic trends, get made, which mean less films are made with vision first. Cinema as an industry should strive for the opposite, but it's getting more and more profitable to just appeal to the masses and play it safe and boring.

movies went to utter dogshit long before capeshit was a thing

cinematic artistry died in a loud and extremely stylish explosion of gaudy commercialism in the 80s

it was glorious but at the same time the death of artistic mainstream movies which were the norm in the decades beforehand

nowadays "movies" are nothing but the deformed rape baby of videogame cutscenes and music videos. 400 cuts in a 30 second fight scene are normal and shaky cam is an actual thing instead of something that is to be avoided.
