Who was the best leader?

Hard mode: not necessarily 2017-compliant answer

It's a hard call. Picard easily holds most true to the ideals of the Federation, but I wouldn't want to be stranded in the Delta Quadrant with him.
If we're going by "best leader", I'll go with Picard, because those under him learn from his example and he's an excellent role model.

>fuck Vulcans
See that's interesting. Really interesting. See, I work as a busboy in a bar in Mill Valley called the 602 Club. So I'm moving dishes when all of a sudden, in walks Captain Jonathan Archer, surrounded by 4 Starfleet fuccbois. Archer is really over the hill, like thinning hair and a heavy gut hanging down low. Anyway, he walks in with a posse of good ol' boys. All basic bitches, whatever the fuck, it's the 22nd Century.

They get sat down, but the waiter for that table is on break so I get told to wait his table. It's fine, I've done it before and the place isn't too busy. Things are going pretty well, I somehow haven't managed to sperg out despite it being a squad of overgrown cadets and a celebrity captain. I've even managed to show off some strength by carrying out all of their dish at once (t-thanks /spacefit/).

So the check comes, and Archer leaves me a pretty large tip. I thank him, and he looks me in the eye. His tone whips from jovial to serious in a heartbeat. My vision zoomed on his face. They say the eyes are the window to the soul. His are no different, and as I peered into his eyes I saw horrible visions of violence and hatred. "I'm not a fucking Vulcan, so it's not too big of a deal," he says, in the most aggressively business whisper he can manage. He drops the seriousness, and gives me an almost-Denobulan smile. I stood there, shocked, and watched his bloated form stagger away, his squad of boomers and flyboys following close behind. Before leaving, he looked over his shoulder, grinning. He mouthed "Heil Colonel Green" and walked out.

This would not be the last time I encountered Jonathan Archer or his intense hatred of the Vulcans.

Kirk would have made some speech about being an officer and how he has to look out for his crewmen.
Picard would have done something similar but with more words and bringing up some Starfleet regulations.
Sisko would have just said "I don't care, I want my people back" and done it

>I wouldn't want to be stranded in the Delta Quadrant with him

Why? Its not like Voyager got home by glassing planets.
>>
>>80923871
Kirk kills Tuvix because Tuvix is evil.

Picard agrees to let Tuvix live, but Tuvix is dying so Picard has to undo him.

Sisko murders Tuvix and feels guilty about it.

Janeway murders Tuvix and doesn't feel guilty about it.

Archer feeds Porthos some cheese and Porthos farts on Tuvix. T'Pol and Hoshi get naked in their transporter accident.

I always thought it was kind of charming. The show wasn't a high budget thing, and they obviously had a bunch of costumes and props hanging around the Paramount lot from something else, so they just thought, "Hmm, well, we've got a whole bunch of Nazi uniforms. . . what can we do with those. ."

It's not like they had the idea and then got the costumes made.

Picard's the best example of Star Fleet, but when it comes down to being a leader Kirk has it. Guy was pure charisma, smart enough to get out of any situation and could think on the fly, plus he made a conscious effort to hide any of the fucked up shit that was happening to him from the crew as he was aware that to his crew he wasn't so much a man but an idea.

That was the A Piece of the Action, the gangster episode, I'm 99% positive. They found some book or something from Chicago.

Ah cool, that makes sense. I loved Star Trek growing up because my mom really liked it, and when we'd go to this mall there was one store that had a bunch of original series episodes on VHS. She'd let my sister and me pick out an episode each to buy, so we got a pretty good collection after a while and all the real classics like The Naked Time, Mirror, Mirror, City on the Edge of Forever, Amok Time, hortas, brain cells, etc. If it's an episode that we owned, I've seen it probably a hundred times, but other ones I've seen once, twice, or maybe never.

Kirk would have actually BEEN Tuvix, or rather he would have been merged with Spock, creating Kock. No moral dilemma since he would have nobly given the order for his own fission.

Seasons 1-3 were the best. Season 4 was when the quality started to fade. Most all of the stinkers are in season 4.

No, they stopped just short of literally glassing planets. They did, however, assist the Borg in acquiring technology that would allow them to assimilate powerful forces that they had until that point been unable to assimilate.
Janeway also gives Federation technology to countless worlds and murders innocent people in order to get her crew home. I'd trust her or Sisko to get me out of the Delta Quadrant over Picard.

Yes. There were some good elements in season 4. It wasn't all bad. The Vulcan and Romulan arcs were good.

But fuck that overrated fag Data as well as his fanbase. The Klingon/augment arc could have been 1000% better without his stupid face chewing up most of the scenery.

The finale was appalling, and the token black "inventor of the transporter" ep was major cringe.

Also, let's not forget "Bound", that retarded green Orion slut episode. You'd have to be a fat, ugly, pimply-faced, sex-starved, permavirgin fanboi to find either one of those talentless, pond scum-colored cunts even mildly attractive. And don't even get me started on the whole, "The slaves were really the masters all along" bullshit.

Oh... and then there's "Stormfront", which, aside from some wonderful visuals of a shuttle being attacked by WWII fighters, and the NX-01 flying low over Manhattan, presented a truly god-awful propaganda story about stereotypical, cartoonish "Nazis" doing stereotypical, cartoonish "Nazi" things, and topping it off with Bobby Baccalieri acting very poorly like a "tough guy" named "Carmine" with a "little sister" who is a moulinyan.

The best part of that two-parter was the part two intro... If only.

Kirk was the best Captian. And I say that as a Picard fan.
But Picard was a diplomat and a tactician. When shit when down with the Borg at Wolf 359 (or later in First Contact) Picard was the one Starfleet put in charge. Same deal when the Romulan/cardassian incursuons/battles. Picard would just show up and basically become Supreme Commander of Everything Military.
Kirk, other than being an Admiral longer than he was a Captian, was a better tactical leader than Picard. Complete the mission, no matter what - that's basically Kirk in a nutshell. 5 years of dee space exploration, with minimal Starfleet contact -- you need a lot of balls to take a ship into nowhere with no back up. Kirk was pure guts and attitude.

I won't mention the other "captains" because fuck all of them.
Janeway at least got voyager home, I guess. Sisko was middle management at best. Archer was just a fucking cuck (and I love Scott Bakula).

>its another federation imposes its morals on an alien society episode
The one thing I hate about the series is how human morality is automatically assumed to be absolute, the trillions of species that don't share human morals are evil and need to be corrected. All the captains are very quick to forget about the Prime Directive when something hurts their feelings.

>>80954032
Yes, he did. Starfleet ordered him to stay away, and then he looks at his crew and tells them that he's about to violate orders by joining the fleet, and that if anyone wants to object, now's the time.
He then joins the fleet and takes command. It's probably just been a while since you watched the film.
>>
>>80954032
Picard was explicitly told to stay away, but he defied orders. They probably listened to him because he commands the flagship, the most advanced ship in the fleet, and because he was the only one with any sort of idea on how to proceed. It also didn't hurt that he was fresh and ready while the rest of them had been getting the crap kicked out of them.

Love Q. Can't get enough of him. Loved all of his episodes. John De Lancie mincing around and pissing off Picard will always be entertaining.
How often does he show up in the other series? I've only watched TNG and I'm not entirely finished with it.

Hello all. Netrek is a multi-player battle simulation with a Star Trek theme. It was originally released in 1988 and has been regularly updated ever since. It was the third Internet game, the first Internet team game, and as of 2017 is the oldest Internet game still actively played. As a player, you captain starships to engage enemy vessels, bomb armies and invade planets in order to expand your team's space empire. The ultimate goal is to genocide the enemy race, but the carnage of battles along the way is ruthlessly fast paced and a lot of fun!

It's a team-oriented game with realtime dogfighting but involving a lot of ongoing strategy. It costs no money to play, there are no ads, and it's open source.

Is anyone in /tv/'s recurring Star Trek threads interested in starting up an ongoing Netrek game?

Are you sure that it was mindless drones repeating posts and not just multiple anons pointing out the same flaws?

I don't hate ENT or VOY, I actually like pretty much all Star Trek, even the stuff that's poorly made. ENT and VOY are clearly weaker than TNG and DS9, though.
TNG basically began as a remake of TOS, DS9 was an entirely new spin on the universe.

VOY was Lost in Space set within the Trek universe with a weak cast and weaker writers, especially for the first three seasons as the good writers for the most part remained with DS9 until it ended. Separating the crew from the rest of the Federation didn't go so well because it meant that most of the Alpha Quadrant species and backstory had to be thrown out the window and start from scratch, and Voyager just wasn't really up to that challenge. Gorgeous ship, though, and the opening theme might be my favourite.

ENT took the criticisms of Voyager onboard and decided to return Trek to its roots by giving us another exploratory show with a new Enterprise. The first season lost a lot of die-hard Trek fans because of small, annoying decisions like ripping off Spock and making the only vulcan onboard the first officer AND science officer, giving the opening theme lyrics instead of being an orchestral piece like all the others, retconning appearances and events for short-term excitement but no regard for the integrity of the series as a whole, etc.
Basically, it didn't feel at all like Star Trek except for the moments where it would unoriginally recycle Star Trek. Nothing was new or fresh until season 3 with the Xindi arc (and most people will tell you that season 3 and 4 were the better two seasons), and by then it was too late to save the show.

>>80948145
>I hear people argue he was a good captain, but really, I felt like he was unnecessarily dickish to his new crew.
He was nervous as fuck and had nothing to negotiate with besides bluffs, which he got called on. He was a mediocre captain who was doing his best despite the circumstances. I'm pretty sure him acting like a dick to the crew was his way of trying to build up some confidence for himself so he didn't piss his pants in the conference room.
>>
>>80953996
The womanising comes from every comedy show that parodied Star Trek since TOS came out, the disobeying orders comes from every TOS movie.
