Whenever Mike talks about Max Landis in later episodes because they review a movie he was involved with like Me Him Her (aka "pronouns") you can see that Jay basically has no patience for that shit.

Basically Jay is the editor Mike desperately needs to keep grounded and focussed, but on a life scale rather than just artistically. You can see he also always has some sort of hand in editing and conceiving both show episodes and their actual feature films, even if he is otherwise unvinvoled.
