If Justice League lives up to Bvs and MoS, then Snyder will be the first director to have done a superhero trilogy without a single bad film.

I'm not big on superhero films in general but BvsS is the first film I've walked out on in at least a decade and I have no regrets. It was boring, and finding out later that Supermsn dies just made me all the more glad I did. A big dramatic scene where a lead character of the upcoming Justice League dies; yeah I'm sure it was a real tear-jerker. What a piece of shit. At least Man of Steel had entertaining villains.

I like following trends too, anon. They make me feel like I'm a part of something. Like I have friends. They help me forget about the loneliness. One of my favourite things to do when someone insults me or says that they don't care about superhero movies is to hit caps lock and type 'DCuck' or 'YOU'RE MAD'. For that one, brief moment, I forget I'm me. I forget that I don't have any friends. That I don't have a girlfriend. That no one would really care if I died. That I'm wasting my youth hanging onto the coattails of a company that I have nothing to do with. I can pretend I've accomplished something, and cling to the success of an industry that would not be affected one iota if I set myself on fire and jumped off of a bridge. That's the power of Marvel. That's the magic of Disney. I'm cold.

http://comicbook.com/dc/2017/03/18/jay-baruchel-defends-batman-v-superman/
>"Batman v Superman…Dawn of Justice: Ultimate Edition is probably the film I’ve seen the most from last year," Baruchel admitted to JoBlo. "I’ve watched it about seven times…"

The interviewer then pointed out how Zack Snyder's divisive film has a "really distinct vision" as compared to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

>"THANK YOU!" he excitedly agreed, then explained why. "This is what I said, even when I saw the theatrical one and didn’t love it. In its weakest moment, it has more choice, style and commitment to it than the best moment in [Captain America:] Civil War. Civil War, I can’t tell you what it’s about or who made it. You watch BATMAN V SUPERMAN you know exactly what it’s about and he fucking committed to a choice and DC always does that."
>He added, "I think history’s going to regard that as the world’s most expensive indie film."

What did he mean by this?
>>
>>80915447
When Batman hears Martha’s name he is snapped back to the moment of his parents’ death and realises that he wasn’t the hero who was going to save the world from a dangerous alien, he was the man who was about to take a boy away from his mother. He was about to become the very thing he had fought against all his life and what had caused him to become Batman in the first place. Even though he was ready to kill Superman before, he had never thought of himself in terms of his parents’ killer and instead saw Superman as the killer. He lost his parents to a shooter “for no reason at all”, he lost Robin to the Joker (chaos) and he lost his last family, his employees to the Kryptonians’ war (that emerged out of nowhere).

But now he realised that he had things the other way around and that Superman was the victim and the man with a family, a mother and people that he loved and whom he was trying to save and was helpless to save at that moment. He saw things for what they really were: Superman was the boy about to lose his mother to a madman and that boy was helpless to save her. That is why when he realises all of this he throws the spear away in anger at what he had let himself become.

When Batman is faced with this reality he doesn't just come back from the edge and become good again, he manages to FINALLY come to terms with the loss he suffered for 30 years. By getting a chance to save Martha, he can finally do something that allows him to cope with his loss, which 20 years of fighting criminals and stopping evil couldn't do. It also reinstills faith in him that what he did for 20 years WASN’T a waste and that "what falls" ISN'T "fallen" permanently and that his life as Batman WASN'T just "a beautiful lie". This is proven at the end of the movie when he says, “Men are still good, we fight, we kill, we betray one another, but we can rebuild, we can do better, we will, we have to.”

Not a big fan of superhero films either. BVS was the first of the genre I was not only able to sit through (Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad, Doctor Strange were just so mind-numbingly shallow and boring) but actually enjoy. I rewatched it and thought it was even better the second time. Mind you, I'm talking about the Extended Cut. There is just something about the way the characters are written, so very archetypal, it was finally a comic film not completely devoid of substance.
>>
>>80915724
I'm not the guy you were originally replying to actually. I've seen the theatrical and DC of BvS.

Christopher Terrio and Snyder both intentionally went out of the superhero safe space and decided to instead venture the genre into the fields of Greek epics and religion. This is partly why BvS feels so different and more geniune than the rest. It is less tainted by the small hint of passive-agressive ironic touch that plagues modern culture. It is uncompromisingly sincere to the point where some reviewers complained that it lacked the light meta tone of Marvels.

But that's the strength of both BvS and also MoS to some extent. They treat their heroes as actual superhero icons in a real world, not as cartoon funny men in costumes that say and do awesome things with no real repercussions.
>>
>>80916224
Yes, exactly. That's what I like about BVS. It really is sincere and does feel like an old legend. Didn't watch MOS yet and am kind of skeptical since BVS lived off the conflicting moralities of its main male and female characters and I can't imagine a film about just Superman being as thought-provoking.
>>
>>80916224
> Greek epics and religion
But it's not what superheroes are about.
>>
>>80916386
While BvS deals with Superman being a real person in a world "where nothing ever stays good", MoS is more about family and abandoning one home to protect the other. BvS is better but a person who enjoys BvS should probably watch MoS aswell.

There is an incredibly powerful scene near the end of MoS that I feel anyone who likes Superman owes themselves to see.
>>
>>80916453
Different interpretations of different superheroes by different writers and artists are about different things. Read a comic book. Stop these useless generalisations.
>>
>>80916453
Superhero's aren't about one thing. Marvel films are cheesy lame popcorn fun and that's part of what superhero's are. But the DC films are much more serious and grave stories of the implications of power and humanity's nature. Superhero's are sometimes about that too.
>>
>>80916453
Did you read that in the official Marvel script guide? Superheroes can be portrayed in different context; Marvel as cartoon funny men, Snyder as real icons in a real world of scepticism and hatred.

But Snyder has elevated the form of the superhero movie to so much more, much like he took the male masturbatory fantasy and evoked Menzies-esque turns by way of deft 'Angels with Filthy Souls' level nesting to dissect what the dividing line between fantasy and reality actually is. It's almost too subtle too notice, with just wisps of clues found in such things as the films intellectually stunning soundtrack choices such as 'Sweet Dreams' providing a piercing torchlight in the multi-faceted fog.

Somebody please describe Superman's arc to me. I know the snydrr movies are filled with Jesus imagery and references to Excalibur and all that shit but my biggest problem with tgem is that Superman just stands around looking concerned saying nothing most. I've read some of these screengrabs explaining the movie as well and I just don't see how the person being described there is the Superman on screen. He's so busy looking concerned that he doesn't have any time to show how he "struggles" being a superhero. Also I don't see why he's pissed at Batman when he killed so many people in MoS and he clearly killed that terrorist guy at the beginning of BvS because muh GF (and don't get me started on how forced that romance is, it actually manages to feel more pointless than a lot of the romances in marvel movies)

JS seems like it will be more faithful to the source material- and I mean this in the most negative connotation possible. JS trailer feels like they listened to fanboys "criticism" of MoS and BVS. BUt le'ts see if snyder can make something great out of it as well
>>
Last marvel movie I saw was guardians of the galaxy. It was ok, I was entertained, but it was quipy and forgettable. I didn't see MoS, but BvS kept being on tv and I ended up watching it. I found it very interesting, and not just because of the Amy Adams bathtub scene, though I do love me some Amy Adams. The Wonder Woman subplot and especially her finding the files on everyone was eye rollingly bad, as was the final fight scene. I did kind of enjoy batman, I thought he was the strongest and well acted character of the movie.
I should watch civil war just because I haven't, but at this point with all superhero movies I'm like, "why? Why bother?"

One of the central themes of BvS is obsession.

Bruce obsesses over vengeance.
Clark obsesses over guilt.
Lex obsesses over power.

Another interesting bit is how big a role lies play in the story. Bruce chases a lie, lies to Alfred, lies to himself about his own motivations. Clark lies to Lois("I don't care what they're saying," and is later shown watching a news story about himself), and Alex lies to everyone *except*, quite possibly, to himself.

Clark feels responsible for his role in all the death during the Kryptonian invasion. It's made him reluctant to embrace a more public face and instead just remain a sort of reactionary "super first-responder." He doesn't do hearings or public meet-and-greets for fear of having to face the consequences of his past actions and even *inactions*. He's terrified of facing the public because he fears they blame him as much as he blames himself. His silence is born of guilt.
>>

Is this not supposed to conflict with the fact that he then goes and murders more people?

Clark's mountaintop reflections after the bombing reveal a memory of his father, who had already explained to him that it's impossible to see every outcome. The best you can do is make your choices and face their consequences.

At the conclusion, Clark makes his choice, taking up the spear and facing down the living embodiment of his guilt and past actions as realized in the form of Doomsday, the "ghost" of Zod.

You know something that hit me the other day? The real answer to why Bruce machined a Kryptonian spear instead of a bullet:

He didn't want to.

His dream was overflowing with unconscious hints that he's aware that Clark is on "the side of the angels," as it were, and that he was letting his obsessions consume him.

A bullet would have made it too easy. He literally forced himself to look the man in the face as killed him, and in true Batman form, he balked when it came to cold-blooded murder.

I'm actually starting to doubt whether Clark really said "Martha" and that's just what Bruce chose to hear.

When he's having his meltdown, Clark doesn't just look scared, he looks confused.

Alright if you're too afraid to watch these videos I understand, it can hurt when your worldview based on a movie comes crashing down. I'll paraphrase my argument for you then since the videos contain a lot more than what I was specifically talking about.

Basically you're pasting all of these emotions on to Superman when the way he's actually written doesn't convey what you said at all.
>He doesn't do hearings or public meet and greets
Except he literally goes to the first hearing they call. How does that make him reluctant to face the public again?

Also I originally asked for Superman's arc and nobody actually answered my question. Superman is guilty, yet still saves people, throughout the entire movie. I get it. Nothing changes about him from the start of the movie though. Hell he "disappears" after Congress blows up, yet conveniently nothing bad happens to the public before he "returns". So we essentially get that mountaintop dialogue with his dad for no good reason since Clark doesn't actually change as a character because of it. It looks deep, and the pointless Bible and Excalibur imagery certainly helps it look deeper than it actually is, but that's all covering up characters who stop making sense the moment you start to think about. Don't even get started on lex

Clark was lost after the explosion during the hearing. He goes to the mountains to calmly collect himself and come to his senses again. And he does so by reminiscing an older conversation with his late father. This scene also strikes an important difference between Clark to Lex/Bruce whose lack of proper father figures have lead them down paths of darkness. If Clark didn't have his father figure to rely on, him being able to cope with these tragedies would've been doubtful.

Also you are typing in a near-incoherent way and you are incredibly mad for no reason at all. And the one argument you put forth has now been debunked.

Yeah I don't get why they're this mad when every blogger who is on RT is in Disney's pockets. I guess if they spent a fraction of the energy thinking about Marvel as they're thinking about BvS, they wouldn't really be able to call themselves Marvel fans.
>>
>>80922650
They'd have to remember Marvel movies first.

When was the last time anybody made a thread about Incredible Hulk? Or Ant-Man? Or Age of Ultron? Or Thor 2? Or the first GotG? Or Doctor Strange? Or Iron Man 2?

Marvel movies are so dispensable. As soon as they're out of the theater, it's like they never released at all.

Meanwhile we're still talking about Man of Steel and Batman vs Superman. Man of Steel was a 2013 movie and on any given day, people will still discuss it.
>>
>>80922479
>Except he literally goes to the first hearing they call.

No, he didn't. You think it took two years to attend a hearing after the events in Metropolis? You notice the room full of people at the witness's testimony? That's a public hearing.

Lois calls him out at the beginning of the movie over the fact he's not appearing at the hearings. That's when he says he doesn't care what they're saying.

>Clark doesn't actually change as a character because of it

He was considering giving up the whole Superman thing. He comes back resolved to continue his campaign. He then symbolically faces his guilt. Next time around, he'll do so publicly. He'll have to.

It's an arc.

How about the bit where superman's parents, essentially modern day Jesus' moral compass, told him "Nah don't worry about it dude, let those kids die despite easily being able to stop it"
If ma and pa Kent weren't the salt of the Earth then superman wouldn't be superman, he'd be an asshole with infinite power who looked out for himself.
And even supposing that they did raise him right, why did pa Kent do a 180 on his morals in that single moment?
Also at a base level superman is overpowered an uninteresting, but that's not really the movie's fault.

>How about the bit where superman's parents, essentially modern day Jesus' moral compass, told him "Nah don't worry about it dude, let those kids die despite easily being able to stop it"

Here's how little attention you paid to that scene:

"Maybe," got Clark's attention, then his dad showed him why that *might* be the case - his alien heritage, the revelation of which was a bell that could not be unrung.

Furthermore, he didn't need to push the bus out of the river in the first place. The driver did his job and made sure the door was open before it even hit the water. All Clark needed to do was shepherd the other kids to safety, but he panicked and did too much, which ended up getting seen as a miracle, all of which is in perfect keeping with Superman's character and a near-perfect foreshadowing of the way things are going between him and the world in BvS.

The world's panicking, he's panicking, he's overachieving and his actions are increasingly being seen as those of a god.

You're welcome.

It is clear that all of them panicked and almost no one had any breath left to swim, let alone follow someone. There was no way superman was "unnecessary" in that situation.

That was a situation that needed clark's intervention, and which set the tone for his disillusionment with his powers and their role in society, an dhence his own.

Because DC didn't have a cinematic universe back then. Marvelfags didn't feel like they had to waste the effort to shit on movies that they knew couldn't compete with their own. But now that DC has an expanding franchise and cultural brand of their own, Marvel is scared. They're literally flooding the internet with shitstorms of fury and bad press directed at DC because they can't stand the thought of their longtime rival doing exactly what they did, but better.

So then why did Clark wear a cape when playing in MoS? Superman didn't exist yet for him to mimic because he would become Superman later in life.
>>
>>80925635
Just having different taste is not proof-positive that yours is objectively superior. You know that, right? I'm sure it serves as a nice moat for your ivory tower, but that, much like your taste, lies entirely within your own head.

I recognize you, by the way. I tried to make my way over to 8/film, but once I got there, I wasn't able to navigate, and neither you nor anyone else was all that forthcoming with helpful hints on rectifying the problem.

They are really sad creatures. I hope the Marvel pay is good.

On different note, I wonder if they realize fanning the flames of corporate warfare will do anything but put them at a huge disadvantage? Maybe they underestimated just how much Civil War would suck in comparison to BvS but they sure are willing to throw a lot of punches when the punches coming back at you are so much faster and stronger.

Are you serious. That's what you get from that scene? An autistic observance about capes. Capes have been worn by non superheros you know. Sometimes I really think that autism is what prevents people from liking this movie.

>tfw an office scene is shot better than marvel
>>
>>80926713
I'm not so sure about that.

Even before BvS was released, Terrio said in an interview that Justice League would be lighter than BvS. He considers BvS the EBS of this trilogy, which naturally means it's the darkest point of the story.

We'll see how Justice League ends up but so long as Terrio and Snyder are allowed to follow their visions, I'm not worried.
