If you watch interviews with Refn, he's clearly very pretentious and enjoys the ambiguity in his movies, as it lets people make their own interpretations. For instance, you can say that the driver has seen too many movies / is autistic, and is wearing the mask because he thinks that he's supposed to. Or you can say that everyone else the driver kills in the movie is essentially defensive, whereas with Nino he seeks him out and murders him, and him using the mask separates his actions from himself. Or you can say that he's wearing the mask so that people talk about ayylmao Tom Cruise stalking around the parking lot in a scorpion jacket rather than a handsome fellow in a scorpion jacket.

Personally, I think he puts on the mask because Refn knows that it'll be a creepy, memorable image, and let people draw their own conclusions. That and the whole killing Nino thing is pretty cold-blooded, and as silly as it is, it's easier to forgive if we don't actually see Gosling do it really.

Gosling says that the driver wears the mask because he's seen too many movies. Listen to Refn talk if you want to be cured of the notion that there's consistent, correct answers to these or many questions.
