I realized the pilot script I wrote was heavily influenced by a video game, I didn't purposely copy it, but there are many similarities, what should I do?
>>
>>80851380
Kill yourself? I'm in the same position, I accidentally rewrote Wreck-It Ralph.
>>
>>80851465
There are big differences in my screenplay, but I feel people will still try and connect the dots and find it distracting.
>>
>>80851598
You're probably right.
What video game, by the way?
>>

What camera would you folks recommend for someone with a budget of around 2k currently?
>>

Blackmagic Ursa mini

Been note taking a lot. I tend to think of a lot of shit and put pen to paper and carry a notebook with me lots, noting down random shit i like.

Plan on starting my female Warriors like script next month. And plan on going back to my satanist cabin horror script and make some heavy changes; first draft was horrid in hindsight.
>>
>>80852391
>Plan on starting my female Warriors like script next month.
Is it a porno?
>>
>>80852026
>>80852124
Or Blackmagic in general. Anything with an EF mount would be smart, cause then you can use diff cameras with the same mounts such as a Canon t5i or a Nikon D5300

I know the Blackmagic Pocket/Cinema camera is around 2 grand. Lens can range from $500-$3000. Depends on what you want. If you got a local camera rental shop, I rec that. I'm sure you could also rent a camera from them if you want to save dough. Just make sure you got a tight shooting schedule to save money.
>>
>>80852488
Oh for sure.

Nah, I don't think I could do something like that. Though I heard from a friend of a friend that work in the business that he makes rad money in the business. Sex sells I guess.

It's more of an action-horror. Female gang is on the run from a pissed off male gang. They need to get from A to B, safely. Bad guys get in the way. Violence happens. Lots of 80s inspired shit in too, colours and sounds/music wise.
>>
>>80852595
Hope it's better than the actual Warriors.
>>
>>80852695
It's a good movie. Aged slightly, but it still works.

No need for a remake either. Just a diff version, highly influenced by it.

I got halfway through a gangster script last year before giving up because I thought it was shit. Just started reading it again and realizing there's actual potential here and it seems worth finishing, just gotta dig up my old plot outline. It's basically Goodfellas/Casino by way of Rashomon, if anybody's curious.
>>
>>80853875
Goodfellas is shit, but the Rashomon with gangsters thing is kind of interesting.
Italian and Irish gangs are so boring.
>>
>>80852595
Sounds like shit to be honest with you.
>Violence happens. Lots of 80s inspired shit in too, colours and sounds/music wise.
If nostalgia is going to be what you're going for, you must not end up in exploitative territory, because that's what you're doing if you are just using nostalgia as a cover for bad film making.

>>80853875
>>80854423
Agree, gangster movies have been in morally ambiguous territory for too long. It's old and stale, if your going to make a gangster movie, you need to have morals.
>>
>>80854649
>gangster movies have been in morally ambiguous territory for too long

>>

>>80857081
Taxi Driver is an outlier.

Raging Bull and King of Comedy may be outliers too, I haven't got to them yet.
>>
>>80857036
Talk about our movie ideas, share our frustrations, share our writing, get feedback, share helpful links.

Mostly feedback though.
>>
>>80857184
Raging Bull is good, haven't seen King of Comedy though. Sadly he went down hill pretty fast.

Hey anons, I'd like to try my hand writing a screenplay, but I really don't think I have the life experience or the knowledge. So I'll read more books, watch movies, live a little longer, etc. but what do you think about a movie about a German who is kidnapped by the Soviets, and forced to work in a labor camp after the war? The story would follow him as he escaped and made his way back to his German village and family after years in captivity. To my knowledge there aren't that many movies about this from the German perspective, despite it being a fairly common occurrence for German guys to just show up to there town after being gone for a couple years.
>>
>>80857531
That sounds boring so I'm sure it'll be fantastic.
The fact that you're not building the story around an interesting/exciting premise leads me to believe the intrigue will lie within the details, characters, and execution.

desu I've got no idea beyond the basic story, which means I need to wait so that the "intrigue will lie within the details, characters, and execution."

Like one of those smart European movies, where the characters philosophize with each other and such, maybe have him meet an Orthodox priest on a train he's hopping or something, which I imagine is how a lot of people got back. I don't want to be pretentious though, and camera creativity is a must.

I'm a pleb so I haven't seen many movies before 2000 or such. Can anyone tell me if my idea is a rehash/has been in a movie before?

>movie about a character with multiple personalities
>played by three different actors that, on-screen, change periodically (appearing as the main character) as each personality takes over
>more than one personality can be on-screen during dialogue between the two
>the side characters obviously know who the "real" character is by looking at them yet doesn't reveal to audience
>no identifying adjectives (i.e. "he", "she", etc.) is said by side characters/is very ambiguous
>by the end of the movie, still a mystery as to which personality was the real human and which ones were figments of his/her imagination
>>
>>80858137
I'm sure you can do it, anon, I believe in you.
>>
>>80858271
I was getting a lot of help in the first thread, but it died in the middle of a conversation, everybody had fell asleep.
>>
>>80858475
Don't know if it's been done before, but it sounds good.
Not really a premise though.
>>
>>80857531

I think this is a pretty interesting perspective. Go for it.
>>
>>80856911
Scorsese does a good job presenting the allure of the criminal lifestyle, which is a necessary part of the "crime doesn't pay" because in order to give half a shit about the characters you have to kind of understand why they'd get involved in that lifestyle. Goodfellas certainly leaned on this for entertainment value, but at the end of the day it was a solid "crime doesn't pay" story in the vein of the old Cagney pictures.

Sometime some one gets a general going but honestly that's the best way to keep it alive. Get a OP with resources. And a few links to YouTube channels like DSLR GUIDE, Rocket Jump, or Film Riot and maybe some PDFs to script writing books. Links to Contests or amazon studios

/p/ has a video sticky with resources on cameras.

The general shouldn't be banned for making threads like this since its obviously /tv/ related just need to meme it hard enough and eventually we'll be able to have threads.

There was a horror movie that did this, but it was all in a psychos head, don't remember what it was called, but it's a fairly recent film and it had John Cusack and a little girl staying at a motel, with several other characters as they get killed off.

There's also a Brian De Palma film called Raising Cain which handles a psycho with multiple personalities, although it's all John Lithgow. pic related is the "cool psycho". Both of Brian De Palma's movie "Sisters" and "Dressed to Kill" also handle similar psycho multiple personality themes and you should watch his filmography for ideas. The new movie called "Split" is also about a psycho with multiple personalities, but I haven't seen it, so I don't know if it's similar.

You should probably watch more movies and read some good critics like Armond White so you're not a "pleb" and get a little autodidacticism going, but the idea is interesting, and I think you could probably do some interesting camera work to play with the different characters. If you go with an ambiguous ending I suggest leaving clues for the viewer, so that it's not just a meme ending, although it really depends on your approach.

Your opinion of Scorsese is useless if you haven't seen those films

>>80854649
I gave up on my gangster script because it seemed like I was coasting on the gangster genre, but I think I wasn't giving the Rashomon element enough credit. The series of different perspectives on events are actually all told by one guy who weighs heavily on a nostalgic and fictionalized version of his life story at first, but gradually breaks down and shows the ugly side of things, including his own cowardice and weakness.
>>
>>80858949
the generals with the links get almost no responses.
which sucks because I spent a good while compiling all those links.

these "Screenwriting/Filmmaking" threads have been more productive than any film production general I've made.

He basically reaches catharsis by finally revealing his past sins, and by the end becomes highly self-aware. Meanwhile his focus on the past has led him to neglect his business in the present, and he gets killed for it in the end.

Plot points. Make character diagrams. Sticky note important events or scenes you want.
>>
>>80859481
I have very divisive opinions when it comes to art, but Armond White is contrarian just to be edgy.
I don't believe he actually agrees with some of the shit he says, and if he does, it's insane he was ever allowed to become a professional critic.

Did you see his Get Out review? He completely misunderstood the movie.
>>
>>80859771
>How do you properly flesh out an idea for a screenplay exactly?
you don't.
>>
>>80859916
Yeah, as I plotted it out I try to draw a connection between the character's past and present, and also show that growth as a human being is bad for business as a criminal. If there's a moral undercurrent to speak of, that would be it. Basically he builds an empire through evil actions, but in the end the regret is too much for him, and his efforts to sort of atone end up getting him killed.
>>
>>80859771

Do what >>>80859943 Said. But it also wouldn't hurt to just outline every single detail you have in mind for the story in chronological order.
>>
>>80859873
>>80859943
How do I know it's bad? How do I add "depth"? How do I develop characters in a naturalistic way, creating fictional people who are unique and have the support of the audience? How do I make a character interesting and memorable? How do I build an engaging world? How do I come up with the little details? How do I move the story along in an interesting way so there's no lag in the middle?

What the fuck are character diagrams?
>>
>>80860016
I haven't seen Get Out, but his review didn't strike me as anything outrageous compared to his usual stuff.
>Armond White is contrarian just to be edgy.
I really don't think this, he seems to firmly believe what he writes. I really think you should give him another shot. He clearly watches all sorts of indie and foreign films, and has a knowledge of film history from his education, work, and life as a film watcher. If you look at some of his favorite movies, he includes Spielberg and Wes Anderson several times.

http://alumnus.caltech.edu/~ejohnson/critics/white.html

He's knows where he stands politically, religiously and morally, which informs how he views films. There are a couple interviews he's done, one for a podcast, and he gave his genuine thoughts on film critique, he's not facetious or contrarian just for the sake of it.

>>80862927

I'd honestly recommend you save up for a Canon 6D (Not 60D, you fuck) or 7D. These are great quality cameras and they're on the high-end of Canon's consumer grade bodies. The 6D is full-frame and you can get the body for under a grand now. I got mine for 970, body only. New would run you 1500.

I don't have a job, and I can't save money, I'm being forced to go to Philly next month to hang out with my brother in-law.
Do you think I should invest in a camera and mic just so I can learn how to shoot and lighting?
Or should I try my hand at winning a writing contest and trying to get backed by a production company?
My primary interests are in directing/acting.
>>
>>80863639
Just do both
>>
>>80863639

Writing. Please focus on becoming a better storyteller. Anyone can get a camera, but writing is easier said than done. A few tips off the top of my head:

Read Screenplays. Learn how they're formatting, how ideas and characters are developed. Let those be your guides. If have common storytelling sense in regard to writing/screenwriting books will slow you down.

Watch more movies.

You wanna learn how to shoot and light, but you don't have a camera? Do you have a smartphone with a good looking camera? START TAKING A SHIT LOAD OF PHOTOGRAPHS. Start seeing the world in a cinematic view and take photos like that. Download VSCO and Instagram, ticker with the darks and the lights. Photographs contains thousands of stories, learn how to capture a moment that could be translated in many different ways.

I promise you, that most people think that being a director is easy off the bat because their rich uncle got them a RED epic, but you NEED to know how to construct a great story. Those contests are great for it because you know how your contemporaries are writing.

My last piece of advice is to not be hard on yourself. Working on your art is hard as fuck. but if you do care about it, you need to be persistent with it and patient with yourself. Do these things, enter contests, save up some dough, and everything will follow if you keep your eye on the ball.
>>
>>80864207
This is dumb advice. >enter contests made me lol.

Listen, >>80863639, it doesn't matter how good you are at anything. The only thing that matters is the aristocracy of pull. If you don't have connections, the best you can hope for is that someone who does buys your material long after you're dead.

I guess it's time to dump my info here again.
These are useful learning tools I've gathered from extensive research and links posted by other anons on previous threads on this issue. A general guide of information I considered useful.
If you don't want to go to film school and you feel like you can learn it all on your own and make it on your own, then you are gonna have to study a lot if you want to be a good filmmaker. And although you won't get things right at first, and you'll make a lot of mistakes regardless of how much you study, you have to learn from it and push through.
I hope these can help you. I'll try to cover as many bases as I can.

And finally, you could also read up on the philosophy of aesthetics.
I'd also RocketJump Film School's videos since they actually break down the crucial technical aspects.

On regards to film school: Depending on the school it can be very useful if you can't just start making your own shorts and hope to be lucky enough to be recognized. You go from not knowing where to begin, to knowing all the steps and procedures necessary, and depending on the school you can even learn how to do a lot of jobs and you get the freedom to film your own project and show it to film festivals.
But do not expect to get a job the moment you get out of school, they cannot magic a career out of thin air for you. You don't have to go to film school to be a filmmaker, but it gives you at least some sort of grounding and it's good for having access to equipment and to meet people (and this is extremely important in the industry).

If you are curious as to whether or not you really want to, or need to, go to film school, I'd start by making a few films by yourself just to figure if you realistically want to do this. You don't want to go through 1-4 years of school just to realize you dont have the ambition it takes to actually make a movie. It takes a lot of energy, time and money to get anything made. You might also want to consider branching into every aspect of film to get a better idea of how it all works before you focus on becoming a "director".
The greatest benefit of going to school for film making is that you will be surrounded by people with the same interest as you who want to make films. As long as you all realize that film is a collaborative medium and you have to work together to get anything made, then you might have a chance to enter the industry.

And I conclude this dump by emphasizing this: MAKE YOUR OWN MOVIES.
Try a hundred times, fail a hundred times, and keep on trying until you make it.
But you at least have to try.

I hope this was useful.
Good luck.

Tier of patricianhood. If you want to at least pretend to have knowledge of films, start with those in Tier 1 and move upwards. By the time you've watched everything each one has produced, you'll have a pretty good (though still far from complete) knowledge about films.

I personally recommend "God's Comedy" by Monteiro if you feel like jumping in at Tier 6 for some reason. It's what somebody from /r9k/ would be like if they actually had a job.

Where would Brian De Palma, Satoshi Kon, and John Carpenter be on here?:

De Palma either 2 or 3. Kon in 3. Carpenter in 2 or 3.

Level 3.

I'd say Level 1 because of Scarface and Mission Impossible but his more obscure work like Phantom Of The Paradise and Body Double puts him at Level 2, perhaps even 3.

Thanks, and I agree, Scarface is garbage. Haven't seen MI.
Carrie, Blow Out, The Fury, Phantom of the Paradise are all fantastic though.

What about Michael Mann?

Phantom Of The Paradise is actually my favorite movie. It's always nice to meet another fan of it.

I'd say Mann is at that point between 2 and 3. Mostly Level 2, I think, if we are gauging this by accessibility and popularity.

Thanks, again.
Phantom of the Paradise isn't my favorite movie, but it's my favorite De Palma so far and deserves further recognition.
Would you want a remake or Broadway adaptation?
>>
How are you supposed to get into this without any money?

>Would you want a remake or Broadway adaptation?
Honestly, it's best to leave it the way it is. The actors are a bit old now and it's not the same without them.
But I would actually like to watch a stage play of it as long as they could bring in some equally talented people.

Phantom is very theatrical (as a take on Phantom Of The Opera should be), it can easily lend itself to a musical. But it's not going to be the same. I can't imagine Old Souls without Jessica Harper, or Life At Last without a prancing Gerrit Graham. Come to think of it, the whole idea of doing Phantom outside of the movie format it so lovingly pays tribute to, and without a young Paul Williams, just seems pointless.

And I don't even want to think about the idea of a remake.

Really, I'm just happy this movie exists in the first place. And more and more people are discovering it and enjoying it. Let it be.

That's all fair, I was just asking because I had ideas for how a remake could be done and who could be in it, but you can't recreate De Palma's directing.
A remake could be good, but it would need to change things and present the story in an almost entirely new way, especially considering the technological and stylistic differences of modern day.

I can't help but want a stage adaptation though, as long as they didn't change too much.
I don't know about you, but I like to hear different renditions, I have three different Les Miserables cast albums in my Library.
And a stage adaptation could get more people to know that this amazing work of art exists.

I just want Phantom of the Paradise, Rocky Horror, and Little Shop of Horrors to be recognized as the holy trifecta of "horror" musicals.
You might hate Rocky Horror and Little Shop though, I wouldn't be surprised.

>I had ideas for how a remake could be done and who could be in it, but you can't recreate De Palma's directing.
It's true, but I'd like to see some of your ideas anyway.

A remake could be done partially if the context was changed. Phantom was satirizing the state of the music industry in the 70s, long before it's exaggerations eventually became tame by modern standards. You could update this satire to extend towards the current music industry.
Again, I heavily oppose the idea of even considering remaking this in the first place, but it could be done.

And yeah, I'd like a chance to watch a stage adaptation too. I never got the chance to attend any of the Phantompalooza events. There were actually efforts to try and produce a Phantom stage musical in 1984, and De Palma was interested in it, but unfortunately they didn't come to pass

>I just want Phantom of the Paradise, Rocky Horror, and Little Shop of Horrors to be recognized as the holy trifecta of "horror" musicals.
I think they are, basically. Most people only know about Rocky Horror but these three are pretty much the only "horror musicals" out there.

>You might hate Rocky Horror and Little Shop though, I wouldn't be surprised.
Not really. I certainly don't hate Little Shop, I love it too, it's a wonderful movie.
I don't dislike Rocky Horror in itself. The movie is fine (it certainly loses a lot of steam in the 2nd half) and of course Tim Curry is glorious. I do hate shadowcasting and I find most Rocky Horror fans to be insufferable. But I don't hate the movie.
I think it's petty to hate on Rocky Horror just because I'm a Phantom fan, I don't see a need for such a rivalry. Phantom is and always has been the superior film, and I'm rather glad that, instead of becoming extremely popular and attracting a lot of shitty fans, Phantom instead slowly developed a cult following and is now being "rediscovered".
